HAIR STYLIST
Ryan Mitchell, Vidal Sassoon
If you don’t look good, he doesn’t look good. Trained at the Vidal Sassoon Academy, Beverly Hills transplant Ryan Mitchell has been living by the school’s slogan at the Tysons Corner salon location since he moved to the East Coast in February 2007. Mitchell, who gravitates toward bold hair styles, said he has been pleased to find his Northern Virginia clients are just as open to trying a trendy Katie Holmes or Posh Spice cut as their left-coast counterparts. “A lot of people ask me if (Tysons) is more conservative than Los Angeles, but surprisingly I get a lot of fun, creative clientele in here,” Mitchell said. “I’m pretty surprised. It’s a pretty fashion-forward area.” Tysons Galleria, 2001 International Drive, McLean; 703-448-9884; www.sassoon.com.—KW

BARBER SHOP
Mickey’s
The words “barber shop” tend to invoke images of sage old men getting a shave while sharing stories and perusing papers. But at lifelong Loudoun County resident Mickey Hope’s 29-year-old establishment, those sage old men share the shop with sage old women, as well as families, children and other Purcellville residents.

Hope shot new energy into the shop, which is the oldest in Purcellville and once upon a time did only cater to men, when he purchased it six years ago. But Mickey’s still holds that same small-town feel that it always has (plus, haircuts cost a decidedly old-fashioned price of $12). 717 E. Main St., Purcellville; 540-338-7727.—KW

FACIAL
Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa
Despite countless alternatives for refreshing facials at local day spas, the classically elegant Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa is still the go-to place for a little R&R. Red Door’s signature—and most popular—facial includes a consultation to determine the best products and needs for your skin and an application of PREVAGE anti-aging products. Their newest treatment, however, the Ultimate Arden Facial, takes skincare to the next level with a warm stone upper-body massage, a hand-softening treatment, a cool stone facial massage, scalp massage, lip or brow wax, makeup application—and, of course, a facial. HAIR STYLIST
Maria Loynab & Lisa Ritner, Salon Bleu
Hair disasters often mean months of ponytails or baseball cap cover-ups. Thankfully, when they’ve experienced trauma at another salon, clients can run to the safety of senior stylist Lisa Ritner’s chair. With a few questions and a lot of patience, Ritner pulls up her stool and begins working on a cure. When she’s done, go see Maria Loynab, whose eye for color and highlights boosts as much confidence in her skill as it does in the new you. “I love seeing how I can transform people’s looks.” And she’s a wizard with a blow-dryer. Curly-haired clients who ask for a blow-out will be treated to a styling free of butterfly-clipped sections and awkward brush-blower juggling. 1839-U International Drive, McLean; 202-333-BLEU; www.bleu.com.—VS
