For those of you who have planned a wedding, whether it was your own or for someone else, you’re familiar with the details and often the extravagance which surround this “big event.” Fashion magazines display beautiful gowns for blushing brides. Promotional events for weddings are trending in order to advertise a smorgasbord of goodies such as wedding cakes and cupcakes, invitations, photographers, caterers and bands or DJ’s. Almost immediately after becoming engaged it seems the planning begins!
Having a big wedding with every detail in its place months in advance has never been a goal of mine. I’d rather put the money aside for a European Vacation or a down payment on a house. But then again, I know some people out there dream of the big day, and all it’s to-do lists. I’ve even heard of some people taking off work to plan their big day.
A friend of mine is engaged and she has been inundated with questions about wedding colors, the engagement ring, the venue and a myriad of other wedding intricacies. But what she’s most often asked is, of course, “When is the wedding?” Her fiancé has also been asked about a date repeatedly and become a bit anxious with this. So, he bought her a wedding planner, succumbing to the pressure.
There is something to enjoying the engagement period instead of completely filling it with the stress of planning a wedding, right? Share your stories with me at littleredbook@northernvirginiamag.com.

“I’d rather put the money aside for a European Vacation or a down payment on a house.” – Will you marry me?

Why so contrary?
Isn’t there something great about enjoying the day that your marriage starts with your friends and family. My fiance and I are getting married in November. We have been planning our wedding together and we are having fun. We each talk about what we need to do, who we need to call and the order of ceremony. This has been a great time for us to work together. Yeah, it can be stressful at times, but, what isn’t stressful?? Its great to know that we can work well together during a stressful situation. We both know that our wedding day will be beautiful. All the work that we put in will culminate in a great day for us to enjoy with family and friends.
We are really enjoying being engaged!
