A Northern Virginia team is guaranteed to fight for the Virginia State Little League Tournament title tomorrow at 7:30 p.m., and it may even be an all-northern affair.
In yesterday’s first match-up, Reston National took down previously unbeaten Bridgewater, 5-0, to move past the quarterfinals. They will face Poquoson, the only non-NoVA team in the semi-finals, who edged out Tuckahoe American by a single run.
West Springfield American will take on fellow Northern Virginia squad SYA East in tomorrow’s second semi-final. Obviously one team’s run will end there, but it ensures that at least one northern Virginia team will compete in the championship.
SYA East stunned Loudoun South, leaving the squad who had scored 20 or more runs in their first three games with a goose egg on the scoreboard. The team from Clifton/Centreville put up 10 runs to win 10-0. Loudoun South, the host team that was previously unbeaten, was the first NoVA team to be eliminated.
West Springfield American earned the right to move past the quaterfinals by beating Culpeper County, 12-10.
Reston National will play Poquoson tonight at 7 p.m. on Huber field (one of four field at Freedom Park in Leesburg). SYA East plays West Springfield American on Reavis field a half hour later.
Three quarters of the remaining teams are from Northern Virginia, giving the Northern side of the state plenty to be hopeful for.
The state tournament’s official Twitter feed will continually update fans on game scores and conditions, and the website will be updated with necessary information shortly after. You can also continue to follow the tournament right here at Northern Virginia Magazine’s Buzz Bin blog.
