Northern Virginia is, perhaps not surprisingly, a huge part of the one percent that’s been getting so much attention lately.
To be in the top one percent of earners, you must make an annual adjusted gross income of at least $343,947. The top three U.S. counties that come closest to matching that number with median household income are all in NoVA.

But how many of those residents are millionaires? Consider this: 8.49 percent of the Metro-D.C. area’s residents have at least $1 million in liquid assets—excludes primary residence and real estate, business partnerships and employer-sponsored retirement. Of the area’s roughly 2.1 million households, over 179,000 are millionaires. This gives the region the fourth highest percentage of millionaires out of all U.S. metro areas.
