While my friend has managed to stay off her feet as of late due to knee surgery, she hasn’t gone unnoticed by, ahem, several men. Is it because she’s on crutches and guys are more chivalrous when they see a woman in need of a helping hand? You be the judge. Here are the responses to this week’s Little Red Book II:

“Men often want to be gentlemen. I’m not sure if the frailty itself is what others find attractive, but it does provide an opportunity to dust off good manners and extend gestures that have perhaps lost relevance with the rise of equal rights and the fear of offending someone’s sense of harassment or equality. I see it happening more like, “Ah…someone who needs and appreciates a little courtesy.” Take a gal off of crutches and those little gestures often may not even merit a ‘thanks.’” – Will Hunting

“Men love to be needed and men love to help out a damsel in distress. There’s just something so ego stroking when an attractive woman says, “What would I do without you?”” – Ralph

“From the female perspective, your story reminded me that sometimes I forget to say thank you when a guy opens a door for me or offers me a place ahead of him in line. How often do we EXPECT it and not say thank you? I’m glad you wrote about your friend; it reminded me not to take chivalry for granted and to appreciate those guys who are thoughtful.” – Elizabeth

“I don’t think being chivalrous makes a big difference. I mean, is the world really going to end if I don’t hold a door open for a woman? No. She can get it herself.” – Jake

“I would like to think that chivalry is not dead, yet.” – Brian

Thanks for your insight, men. Welcome back, Will Hunting. I’ve missed your insight! On the other hand, can you teach Jackass Jake how it’s done? E-mail me at littleredbook@northernvirginiamag.com with comments, anecdotes, and/or questions.

If the Washington Wizards aren’t giving you much to cheer about these days, perhaps you should turn to Northern Virginia’s new professional basketball team, the NoVA Wonders.

If the Washington Wizards aren’t giving you much to cheer about these days, perhaps you should turn to Northern Virginia’s new professional basketball team, the NoVA Wonders.

The Wonders are an expansion team in the once defunct American Basketball Association and will compete in the 2011-2012 season. The team will host a tryout in Chantilly on Saturday, July 9.

In a press release, ABA CEO Joe Newman said his league has had its eyes on NoVA for a while and is excited about the people they have in place to run the expansion squad.

“In Jacqueline “Jackie” Smith, Cassandra Warren and Joy Pickett, we have found three great women to own and operate the team, all with extraordinary basketball and business experience,” says Newman in the press release. “I have no doubt that the NoVA Wonders are going to be a spectacular addition to the ABA.”

The original ABA merged with the National Basketball Association after its 1976 season, but ABA 2.0 is bigger than ever. The league had 24 teams last season in locations ranging from Seattle, Wash., to Jacksonville, Fla., and plans to expand even more with teams like the Wonders.

ABA-style basketball is centered around a more high-powered offense, with scores often soaring past triple digits for both teams. The league is also focused on community involvement and, according to their website, so are the NoVA Wonders.

“The NoVA Wonders maintain the ABA’s philosophy of promoting community-based, exciting, high scoring, above the rim professional basketball entertainment,” the team states on their website. “We want our audience and fans to reflect our community and we are committed to making a positive impact in the Northern Virginia area through partnerships with non-profit and community based organizations.”

The Wonders’ schedule is not set in stone yet, but they will begin play late this November.

Who would have thought being a gimp would attract the men?

A friend of mine recently had knee surgery. Aside from being temporarily inconvenienced and hobbling around the neighborhood on crutches, she’s managed to go to work and dinner, coach a softball team, and frequent her favorite hangout, Starbucks. She has also managed to meet a few new men; being incapacitated has proven to be a guy magnet.

Situation 1: My friend tried to hobble across the dreaded Jeff Davis Highway, and a gentleman offered to help her cross the busy intersection so she wouldn’t “get run over.” She said he was quite helpful.

Situation 2: We shared the elevator last week with an attractive 30 something (aka Bellhop). When we reached the lobby and the elevator door opened, Bellhop—who was literally one step away from getting out—stepped back, gave my friend an eager smile, and insisted that she exit first. Boy, if every guy did this (sans crutches) how awesome would that be!

Situation 3: We were out to dinner last week in Clarendon and seated at the bar when a guy leaned over and told us how attractive it was to see my friend in her weakened state. Her apparent helplessness increased his libido.

Situation 4: The following morning a fellow insisted that she cut in front of him in line at Starbucks. He also bought her a cup of coffee and a scone to complement her Italian Roast. Can I borrow your crutches, please?

Situation 5: The concierge of her apartment building insisted on walking her to her door. Granted, the only item he carried was her small handbag, but still! He turned down a tip.

Is appearing to be weak and helpless really a turn-on, men? Aren’t heels and wedges enough? Has anyone else ever been in this situation? Send me your perspectives or post them below. littleredbook@northernvirginiamag.com.
