The litter of four maned wolf pups will contribute valuable information about this near-threatened species.  Maned wolfs are native to South America, and the wild population must now make do with only 20 percent of their original natural habitat.

Pups born in captivity are rare.  The mortality rate for newborn maned wolves is 50 percent.  Additionally, females can only ovulate when in the presence of a male, so social ties among the wolves must be kept carefully intact.

But the SCBI in Front Royal is leading the research concerning this dwindling species.  They have 12 individual wolves, including the cubs.  Two adults are currently kept at the National Zoo.
