May brings this area’s best weather. Take advantage by cruising down one of our most scenic highways.

by Matt Basheda

John Mosby Highway—U.S. Route 50

Route 50, source of familiar Fairfax traffic, actually runs the length of the country. That’s right—take Rt. 50 west past South Riding and Middleburg, and drive straight to Sacramento, Calif. But traveling the Virginia stretch is almost like traversing a little slice of America, with lots of diversity. Starting in Loudoun and continuing west, you’ll see a Buddhist temple, an English Tea Room, plenty of Civil War scenery and a bridge built during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency. Savor a mix of ancient Virginia history and country estates amid a profusion of springtime greenery, and you won’t soon forget your drive.

Tischenkolrina

England’s Calling

The British Pantry’s red telephone booth pops up beside the roadway to welcome you to this little piece of England. The storefront sells British groceries, but the real draw is the tea room. Sit for a bit, and enjoy authentic English afternoon tea, sandwiches and scones. 41153 John Mosby Highway, Aldie; 703-327- 3215; www.thebritishpantry.us

Stamped in History

The Mount Zion Church dates all the way back to 1850, and several trees on the grounds are over 200 years old. The cemetery’s wall is prehistoric—it contains a rock with a real dinosaur footprint. John Mosby Highway, Aldie; www.mtzioncpa. org

An Apple (Pie) a Day

There’s no better fuel for a journey than fresh-baked desserts. Little Apple Pastry Shop’s delectable treats—dozens of different pies, cakes and cookies—will keep you boppin’ all the way down the road. 23217 Meetinghouse Lane, Aldie; 703-327- 2500; www.hotapplepie.com

The History of Sport

The most prominent building in Middleburg, The National Sporting Library and Museum, houses thousands of sporting history artifacts. Splendid artwork features, too, as do spectacular rare sporting manuals, including a first edition of Izaak Walton’s “The Compleat Angler.” 102 The Plains Road, Middleburg; 540-446- 0776; www.nsl.org

Blossoming Pride

Nestled in the semi-wilderness of Boyce is a quiet, but massive, garden. Owned by the University of Virginia, the State Arboretum of Virginia’s 712 acres are a sight to behold, most especially in the springtime, when its hundreds of plant species bloom. 400 Blandy Farm Lane, Boyce; 540-837-1758; blandy.virginia.edu

Matt Basheda

Sights and Sites

A road trip’s purpose is the stops along the way. See if you can find: the Wat Pananchart Buddhist Temple in Aldie; Goose Creek Bridge; and Upperville Library (don’t blink, or you’ll miss it—it’s tiny!).

If you want to turn a day of golf into a night of fun, but can’t stray too far from home, Lansdowne remains NoVA’s best destination. Their new spring specials prove it. “Swing into Spring” combines two rounds of golf with one overnight stay for two people. Prices start at an astonishing $205 for access to Lansdowne’s luxurious amenities and plush courses.

But if golf is your sole goal during your weekend at Lansdowne, try their “One Pay, Two Play.” Basically—buy one, get one free. Price includes lunch to fuel your fairway foray and 10 percent off your overnight stay.

Lansdowne is bursting this time of year. Kick back in Loudoun’s unique wilderness without leaving civilization.

Rocky Gap Resort

Within Western Maryland’s secluded woods lies a AAA four-diamond resort. Nestled deep inCumberland,Md., Rocky Gap Resort sits on expansive Lake Habeeb.

Rocky Gap boasts the only Jack Nicklaus golf course in Maryland. Emerald and blue intertwine in soothing hills on a deep, cool lake. The course is hardly distinguishable from its silent, wooded surroundings. Sylvan sanctuaries blend with verdant fairways. This is the way golf was meant to be played; not roadside, but as a seamless blend of nature and civilization.

Their golf package is extraordinary. For unlimited golf plus incredible lodging, prices start at $159. Choose your ideal room—lakeside or course-side.

Take a swing at history. Bedford Springs is one of the oldest resorts inAmerica, and one of the first golf courses, too—laid out in 1895.

Its design has been re-sculpted over the years, but the location remains the same. Bedford’s links are as lush as ever. This National Historic Landmark recently underwent a $120 million renovation, and the results show all over the place.

Five separate dining establishments keep you full and happy. Endless amenities fill the resort’s 2,200 acres. Swim indoors or outdoors; they have a pool for each.

And the golf course is a masterpiece. One of America’s most prolific course designers, A.W. Tillinghast, helped shape it. And it still ranks among the mid-Atlantic’s most legendary links.

These hallowed holes spread across the Pennsylvania wilderness like an organic monument. Bedford knows it has a treasure on its hands, but instead of guarding it closely, they open it to all.

Golf packages start at $85 for course access only. Club rentals and overnight stay increase the deal, and time restrictions apply, too.

Still, this is a golf outing for the ages.

Ashland

Take a walking tour through historic Ashland, a few miles north of Richmond off I-95. You’ll see six different private residences, all done up in grand spring time glory. Ashland is a little old train town, and still looks like a postcard from a by gone age, complete with railroad running right through the center of town. Once you’re done walking, take in the rest of this blast from the past in the fine spring air.

Staunton

Staunton’s stunning flora is the main draw here, but it’s by no means the only astounding sight in this spectacular town. The host homes are marvels of architecture from a wide range of historical styles. The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library is a stop on the garden tour, with its own magnificent greenery. The flowers will be out like patriotic fireworks. Staunton’s garden walk welcomes families and children—ages 6 to 12 receive half-price admission, and 5 and under for free.

by Matt Basheda

Luray Caverns is a National Landmark—its otherworldly chambers are unimaginably spectacular. Nature’s custom palace unfolds with each turn of the corner. See an underground lake so still you’ll think it’s the floor. Fix your eyes and ears on an enormous organ built out of the cave’s stalactites, which pulses out unique music. The park grounds above the storied caverns contain plenty to see, too, including a massive garden maze and an incredible bell tower.
101 Cave Hill Road, Luray; 540-743-6551; luraycaverns.com

Munch for Lunch

West Main Market/Bill Isenberg

West Main Market is a true deli. They have plenty of sandwiches, soups, and even beer and wine. But they also offer traditional deli service—order nearly two-dozen types of meats and cheeses to take home.
123 W. Main St., Luray; 540-743-1125; www.westmainmarket.com

Taking a Load Off

Bank Street Books is a sunny used bookstore brimming with treasures both old and fairly new. Its owl-themed décor lends the store a mysterious air that fits perfectly with the secret adventures waiting inside its thousands of pages.
201 W. Main St., Luray; 540-843-0690; www.bankstreetbooksluray.com

Upbeat Atmosphere

Gathering Grounds Patisserie & Café serves the hippest eats in town. Pastries are made by hand and baked fresh, and the menu changes every day. The bright, couch-filled restaurant is the perfect place to hang out during a rainstorm, especially with its free Wi-Fi.
55 E. Main St., Luray; 540-743-1121; www.ggrounds.com

Artistic Flair

A beautiful historic warehouse is home to the extraordinary Warehouse Art Gallery. The ample internal space allows the gallery to keep some unusually large sculptures, but the art represents many genres, from blown glass to photography.
15 Campbell St., Luray; 540-843-0200; www.warehouseartcenter.net

Cabin County

If you feel like making your own bed, hundreds of cabins for rent dot Page County’s adventurous landscape. 1850s Massanutten Springs Retreat is one such retreat, with plenty of room inside and a private pond outside.

Luray Caverns

Hidden Course

Caverns Country Club is unique—a small cave opening sits in the middle of the course’s first fairway. The prized course also provides stunning mountain views, making it one of the most beautiful golf destinations throughout the entire Commonwealth.
910 TC Northcott Blvd., Luray; 540-743-7111

Many well-known folks have called Charlottesville their home. For a star-studded tour of the town, check out our itinerary featuring the local abodes and watering holes of the famed citizens.

College grounds

Stop by the University of Virginia for a glance at former student Edgar Allan Poe’s dorm room. Thanks to the Raven Society of UVA, Room No. 13 has received attentive upkeeping for more than 100 years. It’s marked off with a glass door, giving guests the opportunity to view it. (This may be one of the last Poe places to be kept up, as the ”Poe Toaster” has been a no-show for the past couple of years at the Baltimore grave site on Jan. 19, and Poe fans held the last vigil this year, calling it an end to the tradition.) University of Virginia, West Range, No. 13, Charlottesville; www.hoosonline.virginia.edu

Visit Miller’s Downtown to grab some jalapeno hush puppies and a cold beer at the very location where half of the Dave Matthews Band members—Matthews, Moore and Beauford—began jamming together back in 1991. 109 W. Main St., Charlottesville; 434-971-8511; www.millersdowntown.com

First-Class Charm

Since first opening in 1834, the Boar’s Head Inn has had its fair share of celebrities lay their heads to rest in their luxurious guest suites. The 573-acre property has 170 rooms (including 11 suites) plus a championship golf course, 20 tennis courts, an upscale spa and health club, as well as fantastic dining at The Old Mill Room.200 Ednam Drive, Charlottesville; 434-296-2181; www.historichotels.org; rates from $150 to $325 for single/double, $325 to $575 for suites

Stage appeal

See a show at the Charlottesville nTelos Wireless Pavilion, where Academy Award-winning actress and C-ville resident Sissy Spacek welcomed Loretta Lynn on the stage for the venue’s grand opening in July 2010. The pavilion books a wide variety of bands—from the Goo Goo Dolls and Phish to Jason Mraz and Third Day. 700 E.
These romantic country cabins will have you savoring the wait until spring.

Photo courtesy of The Cabins at Lazy Acres

February can be a tough month to get through; the cheer of the holiday season has faded, the weather is usually bleak, and the first day of spring is weeks away. But instead of letting the winter blues get you down, why not escape to a place that allows you to appreciate all this frosty season has to offer? Virginia’s idyllic Shenandoah Valley is home to hundreds of cabins—both new and restored—available for rental. Page County, located in the northeastern region of the Valley, has even been officially designated the Cabin Capital of Virginia by the state General Assembly. Picture yourself enjoying the warmth of a blazing fire inside a cabin tucked away in snowy woods. During a visit to one of these cozy Shenandoah retreats, you may just find yourself wishing winter could linger awhile.

Shadow Mountain Escape

Winter lovebirds seeking a rural getaway should look no further than Shadow Mountain Escape cabin rentals in Luray. Shadow Mountain prides itself on being Virginia’s only authentic timber frame cabin rental and specializes in hosting couples for romantic and celebratory occasions. Choose from four cabins—Bumble Bee, Butterfly Loft, Dragon Fly and Lady Bug—featuring solid oak exposed beams, old world decor and country charm. The cabins at Shadow Mountain Escape are spread throughout a 15-acre compound, which is also home to a woodland nature trail, mountain stream, fish pond and breathtaking views. Shadow Mountain Escape, owned by Karen and Ralph Riddle, is situated in a quaint area of the Shenandoah Valley called Jewell Hollow, and is conveniently located seven minutes from downtown Luray, two miles from Lake Arrowhead and just under three miles from the main entrance of Shenandoah National Park.

All Shadow Mountain guests receive a complimentary welcome basket full of treats made by Karen Riddle herself. Other complimentary homemade goods, including cakes, are available with certain reservation packages. Shadow Mountain Escape offers special packages for intimate weddings, honeymoons, anniversaries and birthdays. Members of the military, policemen and firemen also receive a 10 percent discount.

Before March 15, be sure to go online and enter Shadow Mountain Escape’s Spring Getaway Sweepstakes. One lucky couple will win a two-night cabin stay, two stoneware Shadow Mountain mugs, a night time open fire at the property campfire pit and horseback riding for two at nearby Jordan Hollow Stables.

Nestled in the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains sits Delaplane. Pay a visit to this town for a change-of-pace, British Isles-inspired getaway. No hustle or bustle, guaranteed.

From a handshake deal for 90 acres at $100 each made decades ago, Laura McCarthy Louden’s grandfather purchased the land that would eventually become Cobbler Mountain Cellars. Since opening their family-owned and -operated winery in June 2011, Laura and her husband, Jeff, have been pouring fantastic bottles of estate-grown cabernet, meritage, hard apple cider and more—proving to be a must-visit location in Northern Virginia’s wine country. Sip on a chardonnay in the Tasting Room, browse the bottles, local breads and cheese for sale in the Cellar, or simply take in the sights of Big Cobbler Mountain with a full glass of your favorite vino in hand.
5909 Long Fall Lane, Delaplane; 540-364-2802; www.cobblercellars.com

Hunter’s Head Tavern, situated in the modest white dwelling that was once owned by Irishman Joseph Carr, founder of Upperville, offers all the class and charm of an English pub, and with locally grown food to boot. As part of Ayrshire Farm’s Farm-to-Fork initiative, the Tavern serves both pub fare and a farm table menu, including dishes like traditional Shepherd’s Pie, Guinness Ayrshire Beef Stew and Grilled Rose Veal Chops.
9048 John S. Mosby Highway, Upperville; 540-592-9020; www.huntersheadtavern.com

Irish Hospitality
The refined yet relaxed 45 acres of Blackthorne Inn offer guests spectacular surroundings: rolling hills, a nearby pond and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Once owned by George Washington, the inn is now operated by the O’Connor family and has 14 guest rooms, either cabin or cottage style. Many include canopy beds, fireplaces and Whirlpool baths. Explore the beautiful scenery with a walk to the gazebo, a two-hour trail ride or a fun fox hunt.

Outdoor Exploration
Lace up your boots and venture out into the 12 or so miles of hiking trails Sky Meadows State Park has to offer. From beginners to advanced climbers, there are trails to suit varying levels of recreational activity. The Snowden Interpretative Trail is a nice, short one-mile jaunt for those with kids, while the Ambassador Whitehouse Trail proves to be a more challenging climb.
For a unique, don’t-see-that-every-day experience, drive on over to the Alpaca Full Moon Farm, for an up close and personal view of the fluffy creatures. In addition to tours, the farm raises alpacas for purchase, too. Venture into the Full Moon Shop for an assortment of gifts. Be sure to leave your name to win a gift—on a full moon night, lucky winners’ names are drawn.
