Randy and I both graduated from Miami University in Oxford, OH. We never met as undergrads, but were introduced by a mutual friend when we were both in our late 20s.
In June 2008, we traveled to Ohio for a wedding and decided to visit Miami for an afternoon. We showed each other where we had lived in college, had a drink at a campus bar, and talked about how many times our paths might have crossed. In the early evening, just before we left, Randy asked if I wanted to kiss under the Upham Arch. Campus tradition says that “sweethearts who kiss beneath the arch light at midnight will marry.” We kissed under the arch, not at midnight, but as the bell tower chimed 6:00 pm, and then Randy knelt down and proposed.
It was a wonderful moment to be back in a special place for both of us, and to finally be able to bring our shared histories together.
