Best Engagement Story

Victoria Kurak and Todd Sievers

Engagement date: January 12, 2008

Wedding date: October 24, 2009

Victoria Kurak & Todd SieversTodd, my fiance, is not a big surprises guy. We usually pick out my birthday and Christmas gifts together. So surprisingly, when he proposed on January 12, 2008 while on vacation in Montana, he caught me completely off guard.

He had his sister carry the ring out to Montana to avoid an awkward moment with airport security. His family stocked the fridge with champagne prior to our arrival. All that was left to do was get me out there!

On the trip out I tried to convince Todd we should tell the ticketing agent we had just gotten engaged and see if we could score an upgrade to First Class. This idea got an eyeroll and was shot down as dishonest. Normally, we’d both do anything for extra leg room!

When we arrived in Montana, I relayed this funny story to Todd’s family, thinking they’d find it entertaining, but the dead silence I met with had me second guessing my morals. (Is it REALLY wrong to fib to get more leg room, really?). I was also virtually attacked when I attempted to help myself to a drink in the fridge. I was practically waited on hand and foot the rest of the evening as if they were hiding something in the fridge.

The next morning we headed out as a family to hit the slopes. We typically ski as a group so when Todd wanted to hit a run on the backside of the mountain and no one wanted to join us, I was a little surprised.

We got about a third of the way down the run, and Todd pulled over to the side and feigned an issue with is boot. When I pulled over too, but not quite in proposing distance, Todd insisted I come closer and make sure his pants weren’t stuck to his boot. After inspection, I reported no boot/pant issues in a “let’s get going” tone of voice. As I faced out back toward the slope (and away from Todd) in hopes of skiing on, I heard Todd say, “Hey, Hon, I need to ask you a question.”

When I turned around (with mind you, my skis still point the other direction), Todd was on one knee with the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen. I collapsed into the snow and replied, “Are you serious?” Not quite the response he was looking for! After a few tears of surprise and joy, he asked me to marry him, and I said of course!

We skied down to the lift and returned to the top of the mountain to join his family in the Summit House for celebratory hot chocolate!
