Well, hello there! Hope everyone’s getting their Thanksgiving meal in order, and making one last dash to the grocery store like every other Northern Virginian. (I know I will have to cook a Thanksgiving meal at some point, but my streak is going crazy strong at 32 years and I’d like to keep it up. …) I’m taking a few days off for Turkey Day, but I did want to drop some knowledge on y’all before I return next week. So here are a few things to keep you amused during your own Thanksgiving holiday and when you’re not standing out in the cold early Friday morning waiting to get a great deal on a food processor.
Go see: “Australia.” Sure, it’s 2 hours and 45 minutes long, but A-list Aussies Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman thrown together in their homeland circa World War II? Big cattle herding scenes? Japanese air raids? If this thing even comes close to Baz Luhrmann’s last flick, “Moulin Rouge,” it’ll rule.
Rent: “Flight of the Conchords.” Long weekends are perfect for watching whole TV seasons, and this HBO comedy/music series – featuring the two weirdest New Zealanders ever – is absurd and awesome (and returning for a second season in January). Just wait for the “Business Time” episode.
Read: “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger. They’re gonna ruin it soon with the movie adaptation, so check out this sci-fi/romance/fantasy tome before Hollywood gets a hold of it. The novel, featuring a dude with a time-traveling illness who visits his true love at different points in her life, says a lot of very cool things about love, destiny and what it means to be human.
Listen to: The Killers’ “Day & Age.” More introspective and grandiose than their previous albums, but just as catchy and utterly downloadable. Also, for those who love the freebies, head over to the official Trans-Siberian Orchestra website to download “Night Enchanted,” the new single from their upcoming album “Nightcastle.” Be swift, though – it’s only available this week.
Waste time with: This web tribute to some of the most unintentionally funny comic panels ever.
Buy: iPod Video Goggles at ThinkGeek. Do you get tired of watching TV shows and movies on your tiny Nano? These wicked “glasses” work with your iPod and project a 24-inch screen in front of you. Sure, you won’t look cool and I wouldn’t suggest walking across a busy street with them, but they’re hella functional.
Video of the week? Do you even need to ask? Have a great Thanksgiving and I’ll type at ya next week!
