It’s the last weekend in March, and we’re getting ever so much closer to the summer movie season. Two very interesting indie films open this week at Fairfax’s Cinema Arts Theatre. The first is the Swedish flick, “Everlasting Moments.” Sure, you’ve never heard of anybody in the cast — Ghita Nørby? Mikael Persbrandt? Bueller? — but it has received some wicked good reviews and follows the life of an early 20th Century woman more interested in photography than her abusive husband. For more American fare, there is “Sunshine Cleaning,” a comedy about two women (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt) who start a biohazard cleanup service for crime scenes. The plot’s pretty decent, and it has Alan Arkin, who is always awesome.
Many of the holiday season’s major releases are debuting on DVD Tuesday, headlined by the Oscar winner for Best Picture. Yep, “Slumdog Millionaire” is coming out, with its acclaimed story of a young Mumbai man and his epic story of tragedy and love. It’s a great movie, except for what happens during the closing credits. When they start rolling, run — even though there’s a really catch song going on. The canine-friendly “Marley & Me” is out, too, with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston as the keepers of the nuttiest dog ever. The Will Smith drama “Seven Pounds” is worth a spot on my Netflix queue, if just for the facts that there is a bunch of secret, mysterious stuff that happens. Secret, mysterious stuff? I’m there. Adam Sandler turns in his childish persona for a more family-friendly one with “Bedtime Stories.” And if you happened to have missed the priceless Ricky Gervais HBO special “Out of England” when it was on HBO, catch it on DVD.
I will be at Best Buy first thing on Sunday to pick up my copy of “Guitar Hero Metallica” and rock out just like Kirk Hammett! Got some cool weekend plans? Let me know in the comments section.
