SteveSongs at Jammin Java

UMW presents “Crowded Spaces: Allison Long Hardy”
Jan. 20- Feb. 5. Open gallery hours. “Crowded Spaces” will showcase the work of artist Allison Long Hardy, adjunct professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Mary Washington. The exhibit explores the ebb and flow of crowds; how crowds exist, move and dissipate as a cohesive unit; and how communication travels through crowds. Hardy’s works of pen, graphite, colored pencil and collage were inspired by her recent residency at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Va. / DuPont Gallery, College Ave, UMW Fredericksburg campus; 540-654-1013; http://galleries.umw.edu; Free.

UMW presents “Mid-Atlantic New Painting 2012”
Jan. 20- Feb. 24. Open gallery hours. The “Mid-Atlantic New Painting 2012” exhibit offers a snapshot of the painting medium through the work of 17 artists and is a representation of some of the current themes in painting. Claire Huschle, executive director of the Arlington Arts Center, will serve as juror of the exhibition. Love, Politics and Scrabble: The Games People Play
Feb. 3-26 during gallery hours. Opening reception Feb. 3 @ 7-9 p.m. An all media exhibit of artwork inspired by the various games people play throughout life. Hearts and Hands Make a Valentine

Students incorporate tracings of their own hand (or that of a child’s) into the design for a personal message of love and goodwill. S. James Madison University School of Music: Claude Debussy

ArtNotes: U.S. Navy Band Brass Quintet
Feb. 4 @ 7:30 p.m. The Workhouse Arts Center’s ArtNotes concert series presents the U.S. Navy Band Brass Quintet. The quintet’s repertoire includes works from the 16th through the 20th centuries, with many of the compositions arranged by its members. This is a free concert, but tickets are required. Fredericksburg Big Flea Market

Owl Walk at Northside Park
Feb. 5 @ 5 p.m. Led by Fairfax Master Naturalist Wendy Cardany, this “Owl Walk” will provide participants with the opportunity to experience the park at night and use their ears instead of their eyes to identify our wild neighbors. The tour will include a presentation on the Barred Owl, a resident of Northside Park, as well a game for younger participants. Archie Fisher in Concert
