‘Nutcracker’ Performances for the Family in Northern Virginia

There is no need to travel into Washington, D.C. this holiday season to see a top-notch performance of “The Nutcracker” ballet. Listed below in chronological order, these options in Northern Virginia are sure to dazzle local fans of all ages.

Institute for Performing Arts, Nutcracker in a Shell All Jazzed Up
Nov. 17-18
Broad Run High School, Ashburn
Tickets $12/adults, $8/children and seniors

This shortened “Nutcracker” show performed “by children, for children” is quickly becoming a local family-favorite.  The Creative Dance Center in Ashburn “jazzes” up the traditional show to incorporate dances using jazz, tap, ballet and hip-hop.


Fairfax Ballet
Nov. 24-25
W.T. Woodson High School, Fairfax
Tickets $22/side orchestra, $25/center orchestra 

Get into the spirit this Thanksgiving weekend with the Fairfax Ballet’s performance of this holiday classic. Professional dancers join company students to put on this unforgettable production.


Ballet NoVA Center Dance Company
Nov. 29-Dec. 2
Thomas Jefferson Community Theater, Arlington
Tickets $15-$35

Talented dancers and beautiful costumes excite audiences of all ages in this local, full length performance.  For the little ones, Ballet NoVA is offering a special preschool performance on Dec. 8 and 9 at the Falls Church center which includes 45 minutes of highlights from “The Nutcracker” to delight little fans.


Gainesville Ballet Studio
Dec. 8
Battlefield High School, Haymarket
Tickets range from $12-$20 

From young three year old ballerinas to amazing professional dancers, the extensive cast will perform in this traditional, full length show.  Additionally, some cast members will host a special Nutcracker Tea at TeaTime Tea Room in Gainesville to give young fans a chance to interact with the cast in a unique, fun holiday setting.


Loudoun Ballet Company
Dec. 8-9, 14-16
Potomac Falls High School, Potomac Falls
Tickets $25/reserved seating, $22/adults, $17/children and seniors

This full-length feature of “The Nutcracker” combines traditions from versions throughout the world, and is put on by talented local and professional dancers.  Since the shows always sell out, the Loudon Ballet Company is offering online ticket sales for the first time this year. 


Virginia Ballet
Dec. 27-29
Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale Campus
$30/adults, $20/children and seniors

For over six decades, this performance of “The Nutcracker” has enthralled the NoVA community. This version features over a hundred performers in gorgeous costumes and is scheduled later in the season so families can enjoy the show without feeling the burn of the holiday rush.
