Spacebar

For: Grilled Cheese

By Stefanie Gans February 26, 2013 at 4:42 pm

FOR:  Grilled Cheese

709 W. Broad St., Falls Church; spcbr.com

Twenty-four craft beers, 17 grilled cheese sandwiches, eight fake meats, three mustards and a fried egg are among the options at Spacebar, the dim and narrow Falls Church bar from Arlington’s Galaxy Hut team.

Because of state laws, spaces must adhere to a food-to-booze ratio (45- to 55-percent). This enforced proportion feels forced here.

Grilled cheeses are the only item available, save for a basket of tots.

The sandwiches are not mostly cheese, as one would assume, but regular sandwiches that happen to have cheese, like the roasted turkey with havarti and avocado on wheat. It is majority meat, making it a delightful deli sandwich, but not a true “grilled cheese.”

The apple sandwich arrived with unmelted gouda, but the sweetness of the fruit played nicely with the nutty cheese.

The meatloaf with mozzarella and provolone offered plenty of satisfying, marinara-filled bites.

The curated selection of craft beer is the real draw.
