The Food Lovers Guide: Seafood

Fresh World
6901 Backlick Road, Springfield; 703-256-5201;
Open 8 a.m.-11 p.m. daily.

This Asian-Latino mainstay fields the wildest seafood selection around, boasting more than two dozen tanks brimming with still-wriggling delicacies (sea squirt, eel, Pacific saury), ice-packed displays layered with glassy-eyed standards (farmed/wild rock fish, whole amber jack, filleted red snapper) and bins of pick-your-own bottom dwellers (crabs, mud snails, clams).

America Seafood
4550 Lee Highway, Arlington; 703-522-8080
Open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Royce draws fresh seafood—including myriad fish (flounder, marlin, corvina), crustaceans (whole lobster, five gauges of Gulf shrimp, three types of crab), a half-dozen signature chowders (grouper, halibut, clam) and various custom-smoked creations (mussels, scallop, swordfish salads)—from Boston to Key Largo. Just leave room for his homemade Key lime pie (tartacular).

M. Slavin & Sons
2710 S. Glebe Road, Arlington; 703-486-0400;
Open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

With fresh seafood flowing daily from their Fulton Fish Market operation, M. Slavin’s Arlington shop fields an ocean of buying opportunities. Mid-Atlantic director John Leary estimates they carry dozens of fish (Spanish mackerel, wild salmon, farm-raised tilapia), assorted oysters (Blue Point, Malpeque, Beausoleil) plus frozen specialties (lobster tails, salt cod, Dungeness crabs).

Great Wall
2982 Gallows Road, Falls Church; 703-208-3320;
Open 8 a.m.-11 p.m. daily.

This international grocery chain mostly caters to Asian expats—which means lots of still-swimming sea life (soft shell turtles, bullfrogs, crayfish) and plenty of marine curiosities (sliced jellyfish, giant razor clams, whole squid). Staff sidesteps potential language issues via a numbered cleaning guide (1 = scaled, 8 = thoroughly filleted).
