One of my favorite Christmas activities is putting on some appropriate music and cruising around, checking out Christmas lights.
I love driving, and this season gives me an extra reason to roll around my neighborhood streets. And you need good music to go with the lights. I recommend slower Christmas music for an introspective mood–perhaps Vince Guaraldi’s “Charlie Brown Christmas”; I tend to save energetic, up-tempo carols for shopping and traveling. But the music doesn’t have to be Christmas-related at all. Radiohead compliments the cold weather and gleaming lights perfectly.
Concerning places to go–well, I’m sure your neighborhood has a ton of treasures you’ve already scoped out. But Herndon makes a point of recognizing its exceptional decorators. The town recently announced the winners of its “Dress Up Herndon for the Holidays” event.
Best neighborhood goes to Austin Lane, and Brush Strokes Salon, at 711 Pine Street, is the commercial winner. The entire town participated in this event, so take a ride down Herndon’s streets and see all the community’s hard work.
The Bull Run Festival of Lights is well known. Thousands of visitors each year drive through this spectacular display. This year they’ve added a new scene, called “Santa’s Enchanted Lights.” Check it out:
But the Festival of Lights has much more to offer–you’ll have to see it for yourself.
And if you’re looking for the single most outrageously decorated house in the area, well, there’s someone who can help you a lot better than I can. Here’s a funny website, run by a woman named Holly, dedicated to NoVA’s wildest Christmas decorations.
And here are some things she’s found, right here in Northern Virginia:
P.S. If you’re still looking for gift ideas, it’s not too late! We’ve got tons of ‘em! Just try not to let your expectations get the better of you. And keep checking the Game Plan for your comprehensive guide to holiday fun. Tomorrow: family traditions and pet events!
