This Black Friday goes to the dogs. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) is hosting their annual Black Friday Adoption event. Currently 23 dogs, 56 cats and 21 small animals are looking for a good home this holiday season.

This is the fourth year the animal shelter has put together an adoption event on Black Friday. But what makes this one different from others in the past? This event is a “name your price” adoption special where visitors looking to adopt a pet will pay however much they want for that special dog. No price tags on these holiday pups!

But make sure you read the fine print. The “name your own price” applies only to pets six months and older. Other animals who are younger than six months will cost the standard rate. Families looking to adopt and name their price must pay a minimum of $10.

Here are a few reminders before attending the event. These rules can also be seen on AWLA’s website.

*All members of the family or household must be present for introductions and adoption consultations

*Bring a photo ID and proof of address

*Bring a copy of the lease or rental agreement or signed letter from a landlord that states pets are permitted in the rental property

*Bring cash, a check or a credit card for payment

*A 24-hour hold will only apply to adopters who currently have a dog living in their home

Besides the standard dogs and cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, lovebirds, turtles, a tortoise, a pigeon, a snake and a chinchilla will also be available for adoption.

Last year’s Black Friday Adoption Special succeeded with 20 animals finding new homes. This year the animal shelter is expecting from 50 to 100 families showing up throughout the day.

If you miss this adoption event you can always visit AWLA for “Fall-for-Me Fridays” where all fall-colored animals are 50 percent off during the fall season. In addition, the month of November is “Adopt-A-Senior Pet Month” where animals eight years and older are 50 percent off.

If you find yourself leaving empty handed on Friday, AWLA would appreciate a tax-deductible donation to help provide for their homeless animals.
