Veterans Day is Wednesday, Nov. 11, and there are plenty of parades, concerts and memorials to attend. Spend your day giving thanks for our honorable soldiers at a few of these local events.
1. National Veterans Day Observance
8 a.m. // The Arlington Cemetery celebrates its 62nd annual Veterans Day Observance. This year all events take place at the Amphitheater and early arrival is strongly suggested. The day begins with a prelude concert from the United States Army Band then followed the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. 2. Mount Vernon Salutes Veterans
9 a.m.-4 p.m. // Mount Vernon honors Veterans Day by offering free admission for all active duty, former or retired military personnel. There will be a concert held by the Harmony Singers and the United States Air Force String Orchestra. 3. Herndon Veteran’s Day Observance
11 a.m. // The town of Herndon will be showing respect for its veterans with various displays and performances. Come watch the Herndon High School Junior Naval ROTC perform the color guard. 4. 13th Annual Veterans’ Powwow
12 p.m. – 8 p.m.// The Annual Veterans’ Powwow is a central social event in indigenous culture, combining dance and music. 5. Hylton Performing Arts Center
1 p.m. // The Hylton Performing Arts Center presents an afternoon of celebrating our veterans. There will be plenty of activities to do for the entire family. Enjoy vocal and instrumental performances from local groups, art exhibitions and even a petting zoo. There will also be music lessons and an opportunity for you to bring your own instrument and join a freestyle ensemble.
