Feliz Año Nuevo, Gut Checkers!
I don’t know if you’ve made any hard and fast resolutions for 2010, but if adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is one of’em, here’s a little piece of advice: think local.
And I’m not saying that out of allegiance to the locavore movement or because regional producers line my pockets with kickbacks (NY Resolution #23: Take more bribes!).
I just want to spare you from fixating on some exotic foodstuff that’ll require you to totally rearrange your life and burn through frequent flier miles like kindling. Which is exactly what happened when author Chip Brantley wrapped his lips around his first pluot.
As documented in his engaging expose, The Perfect Fruit, that first bite compelled the fastidious food sleuth to track down the hybrid food’s creator, wander the fields were scientists have their way with Mother Nature’s wares and commune with the fruit vendors who bring their battle to your local produce aisle every week.
To claim your copy of The Perfect Fruit, just tell us where you load up on fresh produce. Farmers markets, CSAs, boutique groceries, pick-your-own orchards are all ripe for the nominating.
We’ll select one winner at random from all the comments submitted before 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan 8.

Crooked Run Orchard in Purcellville has great apples and fruit in the fall. Also, H-Mart has unbelievably inexpensive fruit compared to other grocery stores like Giant or Safeway. Where else can you get a carton of strawberries for literally, 99 cents (or sometimes 79 cents)?! Farmer’s Markets are really fun in the summer, especially for tomatoes and corn – yum!
