Grab a bucket and an appetite and get yourself to Berryville this Saturday for the 2010 Peach Festival. 

The bucket will be for gathering the peaches at this charming pick-your-own farm – though if you have a shortage of buckets, they provide darling Radio Flyer wagons that cast me back into fuzzy childhood memories.  Just thinking about it provokes an intense hankering to watch a few early 90’s films.  Young Elijah Wood and Radio Flyer, anyone?  Wagons are also useful for carting around children who have already wearied of walking in this world.  (Caveat! Please do NOT attempt to roll the wagon over curbs or ditches until passengers are given a chance to disembark before turbulence begins.  I speak from personal experience, and if I could go back 22 years and offer the same advice to my parents, I might be more inclined to sport a shaved noggin today.)

 

The appetite will be for eating Peach Melba Sundaes prepared by farm Chef Tona Bays.  Her sundaes use blackberries in lieu of raspberries and only the freshest, most natural ingredients available.  Chef Tona has been working at Mackintosh Fruit Farms for three years now and aims to not let anything go to waste.  It’s about using food responsibly, she says.   To this end, she applies the fresh ingredients straight from the farm to create new seasonal dishes.  She also designs the menu for farm dinners hosted once a month, makes the rare and delectable pawpaw ice cream and a mean cantaloupe milkshake to come in September.

But right now we’re here to talk peaches - which are in season and plentiful.  The festival will also feature live music, hayrides, a moon-bounce and more.

Tickets: Free entry, but peach-picking, sundaes and other fresh farm food are priced individually
