For everything there is a time, place and a season. Right now ‘tis the season for County Fairs and for feasting on the “World’s Best” fried turkey legs, funnel cakes, corn-on-the-cob and homemade pupusas.
That’s right – I said pupusas. As Washington Post writer Brad Wolverton reports, our county fairs are beginning to reflect the cultural diversity of our nation. While traditional fairs have often celebrated local produce, food vendors are starting to shake up the scene with more ethnic offerings – gyros, Salvadoran tortillas, Ecuadoran fruit salads and more.
And for dessert you can indulge in the regulars like deep fried oreos – because all’s fair in love and on county fairgrounds. That’s why they are called fairgrounds. Or at least that’s one way to justify the gluttony.

The week is still young to catch the Arlington County Fair (August 19-22) or the Prince William County Fair (August 13-21). Or save your appetite for the Shenandoah County Fair coming up (August 27-September 4).
Then soon the season for Oktoberfest will begin…
