One of my absolute favorite things in the world is cheese. Havarti, Fontina, Brie- I have never met a cheese I didn’t like. Some of my favorite cheesy dishes include the The Ale House Mac and Cheese from Dogfish Head and the Lobster Mac and Cheese with Ham at Jackson’s. My favorite place to look at and shop for cheese is Wegmans. Wegmans has an amazing specialty cheese shop that is near the wine section in most stores. It is always fun to see and taste the different varieties and gawk at the cheeses with $500+ price tags.
I recently learned of a company called Leeners. Leeners is a retail company that sells You-Make-Kit products. Some that look interesting include make-your-own root beer, hot sauce, wine, and cheese. Kits are even available to make your own candy and bubble gum!
Several different cheese kits are available from soft cheeses to mozzarella and ricotta. Depending on which kit you get, and how long you are willing to spend on your cheesemaking project, you can make yogurt cheese, Farmhouse Cheddar, and even mozzarella in just a few hours.
The Ultimate Cheese Kit is what I have my eye on. It includes The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Cheese Making, and tons of tools and ingredients to get started on your own cheese projects.
For those who are really interested in learning about cheese in person, coming up on September 30th is a class called Cheese 101: An Introductory Course on Cheese. This 2 hour event is at The Frenchman’s Cellar in Culpeper and will cover everything from how to judge cheese to basic terminology. Reservations are required, so make sure to call today!
