Bratwurst & Sauerkraut

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Friday, October 1st, 2010

October is officially here.  The rain has stopped (for now) and the weekend is also upon us.  When was the last time you had a bratwurst or some sauerkraut?  You will certainly have many opportunities in October, as we have a fabulous Oktoberfest Finder that lists every fest we could find under the sun.

So yes, it is time to have some bratwurst and sauerkraut again.  If you have never tried bratwurst and sauerkraut, now is also the time.  What is bratwurst?  It looks similar to a hot dog, but is a sausage that is made of veal, beef, or pork.  The finely chopped meat can be basted in beer or broth and is usually grilled.  While we may only eat it once in awhile, it is actually a very popular fast food in German speaking countries.

Sauerkraut is a little trickier to love.  It could just be the sour taste, but many people are hesitant to try it.  Sauerkraut is made of cabbage that is left to ferment and grow bacteria to perfection.  Yes, it sounds gross, but it is actually very good and the perfect accompaniment to a bratwurst.

My favorite way to eat bratwurst is with spicy mustard on a pretzel roll, but really it will taste good no matter how you do it.  Pile the sauerkraut on top, add a pickle, or chop the bratwurst into the sauerkraut.  Once you try it, it may just become something you want more than once a year.

Make sure to check out our Oktoberfest Finder to find a festival close to you.  It’s time for Oktoberfest, but just like October, it will be gone sooner than you know it.
