We are living in the golden age of bacon. Long gone are the days that it was considered solely a breakfast food. It’s cult-like popularity is widespread, and countless meals can be improved upon with its addition. No other food item can inspire genuine excitement like bacon can. Just thinking about the salty flavor and crispy texture is enough to start salivating.
It’s not uncommon to see strips on a burger or wrapped around an appetizer. There’s even bacon-flavored salad dressings. What you don’t see quite as often are cocktails and desserts that share a common theme. Bacon-infused spirits are a real thing, and bacon chocolate bars are all the rage at the moment. Biagio’s of Adams Morgan imports Mo’s Bars from the Chicago-based chocolatier, Vosges.
Sample sizes are sold for $2.50, while the bigger ones are $6.50. The simultaneously sweet and savory concoction blends applewood smoked bacon, alder wood smoked salt, and pure milk chocolate. Each bite contains finely chopped bits of bacon and an unexpectedly smooth aftertaste. Mo’s Bars can also be purchased online.
Clarendon’s 3 Bar & Grill has been known to experiment in the past, but Denny’s recent advertisements inspired this post. Seven new items have been added to the menu to celebrate what’s being called Baconalia. These include bacon flapjacks, bacon meatloaf, and a maple bacon sundae. While they may not be the classiest of establishments, I applaud their effort to regain some relevance in the crowded restaurant scene. If there’s one thing that can catch the eye of most Americans, it’s got to be bacon.
Now excuse me while I go indulge a certain craving.
