Digital media and beauty expert Nicole Marie Melton sifts through her product-lined shelves to share her current faves and details on her latest project.
It is clear from one glance at Nicole Marie Melton’s flawless face that she knows a thing or two about the business of beauty. At the age of 14 she began an unofficial business in high school doing everything from perfecting pig tails to creating personalized hair ribbons for cheerleaders in her mother’s basement. After college not much had changed as she was still the go-to person for beauty news, sharing fresh content first as an intern and later as an online beauty editor for Essence magazine in New York.
Having spent her college years in the D.C. area at Howard University, Melton returned after gaining a master’s degree in digital media and spending three years at Essence to launch her own health and beauty digital branding company: Melton Digital. “What makes beauty and digital such a unique pair is that when women want a new hairstyle, beauty look or skincare regimen they go online. YouTube, blogs and social media have played such a huge role in how people consume beauty,” Melton says. Local business owners can use her expertise to “get those followers off of social media and into your office.”
While she believes in the power of a good facial cleanser or the perfect scent, Melton knows that the true mark of beauty is found within. “It never has anything to do with your hair, makeup or body type. Being beautiful is about being happy and having true joy.” —Angela Bobo
