Good morning, shoppers! Happy Friday! Been a tad too busy lately to keep up with your fave fashion reads and shows? Well, if you could use a little help in deciphering which fall duds will truly deliver, great news! We just received the full sartorial scoop for fall from none other than our buds at Bloomingdale’s.
Highlights of Bloomie’s Take on Fall 2009 Fashion Trends
The Inspiration: Classic American films, spanning several decades, especially the ’80s (think “Desperately Seeking Susan”), also the ’20s (“Dr. Zhivago”), and ’50s and ’60s (“High Society”).
The Hottest Items:
Exciting ’80s-inspired Options …
The Strong-shouldered Jacket, as seen on the runways of Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs and Giorgio Armani. Pairing tips: Wear with leggings or over a dress.
Dazzling Disco Dresses and Mini Skirts (in shimmering brocade, shiny gold lame or covered in sequins), as seen on the runway of Nanette Lepore. Two must-haves for the power party girl: one-shoulder micro minis and peek-a-boo cutouts. Other options: clothing embellished with zippers, studs and chains.
Acid brights, as seen on the runways of Yigal Azrouel, Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs. Instead of considering black, winter white and gray as staple fall colors, think shocking pink, orange, acid green, cobalt and chrome yellow.
Knits (with generous proportions and chunky stitches), as seen on the runway of everyone from Michael Williamson and Michael Kors to Missoni and Ralph Lauren. How to wear them: Mix colors and patterns, layering chunky knits over skinny pants or leggings.
Over-the-knee Boots, as seen dominating the catwalk in New York, Milan and Paris. Pairing advice: Wear them, like leggings, with the bold-shouldered jacket and a mini skirt. Black ones are the best bet, leather or suede.
Leggings (liquid), Hosiery (shiny tights, fishnets, ribbed knit tights and animal prints) & Gloves (often embellished with zippers and studs or fingerless–as seen at Chanel and Alberta Ferretti shows). These add the finishing touch to the ’80s look.
Disco Bags (often with long chains or leather straps). How to wear them: across your body or swinging at your side.
Star Shades (in the shield shape), as seen at Gucci and Marc Jacobs. For assertive gals who know they are stars.
Clasically-inspired “It” Pieces …
Button-down Shirts (nipped at the waist), as seen at Ralph Lauren. Reminiscent of Katherine Hepburn in the mid-1900s. Pairing options: Wear them with slouchy menswear trousers or cigarette pants.
The Little Black Dress. Along with the sheath, these have staying power. Consider them recession-proof.
Novelty Patterns (tweed, plaid, houndstooth and pinstripe), as seen on the runway of Giorgio Armani. Think Grace Kelly.
Romantic winners …
Russian-inspired Prints and Furs, as seen at Chanel. Think Julie Christie in “Dr. Zhivago.” Other regal options: jewel tones such as green, red and gold.
Military Details (especially on navy and charcoal jackets, plus boots with buckles and military hats). Think tough and structured.
I’m so excited about all of the fun hosiery options, chunky knits and over-the-knee boots! Tell me, which trends excite you the most?
Ps. In celebration of the American film industry’s influence on this fall’s fashions, Bloomingdale’s has partnered with major movie studios in order to give away more than 30,000 movie tickets to customers through gift-with-purchase promotions. So, be on the lookout!

I guess the ’80s-inspired looks are really here to stay! Strong-shouldered jackets? Acid brights? Next time I see someone walking down the street with neon shoulder pads, I’ll be sure to shake her hand.
Over the knee boots are so hot. I don’t know if I can pull them off though…!
