NVM Review

(September 2006)

By Warren Rojas

This popular Arlington fixture has been cranking out Alpine-inspired delicacies for what seems like an eternity, and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Although it caters to all European appetites, this wonderland of hand-crafted sweets and hefty sandwiches is perhaps most adept at preparing traditional Bavarian dishes.

A hearty German cold-cut sandwich comes piled high with tiroler, a smoked Austrian ham, gelbwurst, a German salami, and Muenster cheese, all stacked on a crusty hard roll. Likewise, a classic Reuben summons a mountain of steaming corned beef buried under tangy sauerkraut and melted Swiss on toasted Jewish rye. Switching gears, a serving of bienenstich, a flaky mass of Bavarian cream and sliced almonds draped in honey, is a sugary sensation.

The nearly overwhelming wall of freshly baked breads includes a rainbow of flavored bagels, giant Kaiser rolls, authentic Irish soda bread, yeasty pumpernickel loaves, a dense black forest sourdough and an outstanding marble rye. Along with homemade sandwiches, the deli is always stocked with plenty of fresh bratwurst, sauerkraut and assorted specialty meats (liverwurst, pastrami). Should your sweet tooth start to tingle, make for a dessert case filled with everything from apricot-filled hammentaschen to sticky cinnamon buns.
