My mother constantly told us growing up that all children need “strong bones and a healthy body.” Because of this, in addition to a balanced meal, taking a multivitamin was a required step in our evening dinner-time routine. Ever the rebels, my brother and I would discreetly hide them in our napkins while we cleared our plates or toss them behind the refrigerator when our parents weren’t looking. At the time, the whole process of taking a vitamin seemed burdensome and unnecessary. So upon entering college I shunned the nutrient-packed pills and never looked back.
Three years later, it has become my job to discover and test the tricks and top products to help NoVA residents look their best, so imagine my surprise when my inbox became filled with pitches for the perks of using magical beauty pills. Depending on the company, these products range from vitamin E-infused products with essential oils to anti-acne vitamins and specially curated vita-packs. While they all received positive reviews, these options can be pricey. After some research, and noting commonly shared ingredients, I found a few vitamins to add to my beauty routine that could be purchased at local drugstores.
My goal was to have stronger hair and glowy skin, so I added biotin (designed to strengthen the nail beds, protect against dryness and stimulate new hair growth) and a vitamin B complex (a skin antioxidant, acne fighter and stress reducer). Most vitamin B complex pills also add vitamin C (promotes an even skin tone and prevents wrinkles). After a month of this routine, my scalp was less dry and my hair felt smoother. The best part? Not even the tiniest of pimples has popped up within the past month. An aesthetician during my last facial even lamented that she ‘barely had anything to do.’ As with anything, it is important to consult a doctor before adding extra nutrients to your daily routine. But most importantly, this just proves that mom was right (again).
