Let’s face it, caring for hair when it’s desert hot out there can be high maintenance. Whether you have color-treated or natural hair, the sun has no mercy on anyone’s locks, especially when we are spending most of our summer days outside. When we are at the pool or the beach, that’s when sun damage can be at its worst, causing hair texture to become dry and frizzy. We sought organic product solutions with Cecelia Jeffrey, wellness associate at MOM’s Organic Market in Merrifield, to provide natural alternatives that hopefully won’t leave our hair with the much-dreaded chemical buildup some hair products can cause.
Cecelia’s product recommendations
Solar Recover Save Your Hair – This product not only protects against sun damage, but it also includes natural ingredients such as avocado oil, coconut oil and calendula (which is great for dry skin) among others.
Acure Hair Mask Moisturizing Root Repair – This hair mask provides the deep conditioning hair needs when frequenting the beach or pool.
John Masters Organics Green Tea and Calendula Conditioning Mist – The natural ingredients in this leave-in conditioner target your scalp and roots to nourish them and prevent dryness.
Using essential oils is a key element in repairing hair damage over time. Argan oil, rosemary oil and avocado oil are all great components of a healthy hair beauty routine.
Our tips for applying essential oils to hair
– Comb your hair before applying. You can apply the oils to damp or dry hair, whichever you prefer.
– Place towels where needed to avoid slippery surfaces and to prevent the oil from dripping on your shoulders.
– Put gloves on if you prefer, and use a dropper for the application.
– Part your hair, apply the oil onto scalp and gently rub with your fingers to cover your roots. Repeat until you have covered your roots.
– Slowly apply the oil to the rest of the hair, from roots to ends.
– Tie or braid your hair, and let the oil set for at least an hour before rinsing it out. It is better to wash your hair in the sink to avoid a slippery shower.
– Depending on your hair type and texture, you might need to rinse a few more times before the oily residue is completely gone from your hair.
