Good Greens

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, December 16th, 2010

I have never been a big fan of salad.  I dislike iceberg lettuce with a passion.  I have tried covering it in tomatoes, red pepper flakes, and even a cup of ranch dressing, but I still can’t say that I like it.  Even the places that cover iceberg in blue cheese and bacon can’t get me to order their salad.

I finally got into salads when I had the Poached Pear salad at Busboys & Poets in Arlington.  A salad of mixed greens was topped with pears, goat cheese, caramelized onions, and pecans then drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette.

Busboys & Poets also offers many other flavorful salads including a Steak and Asparagus Salad, Greek Salad, and Spinach and Wheat Berry Salad.

Spinach is a vegetable that I love prepared in any way- sauteed in olive oil, in salads, or stuffed inside chicken.  I think spinach salads are more flavorful than iceberg salads and they also bring a healthy dose of vitamins.  Strawberry spinach salad is easy to make at home and meal that is packed full of flavor and vitamins.  This would be a great salad to make the day after having a heavy meal on Thanksgiving or Christmas.

If you think you hate salad, find a salad that lists ingredients you like and try it out.  It may not become your favorite meal, but it may surprise you.

Ranking Resto Tweeters

When FriendsEAT co-founder Antonio Evans released his “Top 100 Restaurants Using Twitter,” I was pleasantly surprised to find that D.C.-Metro restaurants made up over one-fifth (21 total) of the honorees and that several NoVA properties were prominently featured (#87 – Lebanese Taverna, #83 – Liberty Tavern, #45 – Vinifera, #9 – Busboys & Poets).

But as I perused the salute to social media skills, it became clear that I had no clue what criteria Evans had used to build his restaurant roll call.

Some had beaucoup followers but seemed stingy with their tweets. Others were clearly just regurgitating content originally disseminated elsewhere.

Although Evans declined to provide the specific methodology employed–he did maintain that the list had not been seeded with undisclosed clients from his Binary Bits PR operation–here’s a pseudo-explanation:

“We looked at a combination of off-site (meaning how they are represented outside of twitter), total follower, amount of tweets, and user engagement. Together with the Twitter API [and] along with a lot of data mining we got our answer,” he suggested.

Clear as concrete.

We’ve been tracking NoVA’s tweeting elite for some time now. And since I’ve not yet had a chance to do any significant data mining, here is my totally unscientific take on the most consistently engaging, feedback-hungry and, quite often, thoroughly entertaining hospitality agents working it 140 characters at a time:

* BGR: regularly mixes things up with followers, openly solicits new burger/shake suggestions

* Chef Geoff’s: constant updates, crazy specials/dining discounts

* Clyde’s: tosses out specials/tweetup invites at almost a  fever pitch

* Dairy Godmother: a whole lot of dairy love sprinkled with community activism

* Georgetown Cupcake: the daily “secret flavor” alert alone is worth a follow

What local restaurants are on your must-follow list?

Forget Snowmageddon, it’s DC Meat-Free Week!

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

In response to Meat Week, DC Vegan joined forces with Compassion Over Killing to plan the inaugural DC Meat-Free Week.  Unfortunately, Old Man Winter doesn’t seem to want you to eat your veggies.

Snowmageddon interfered with the last two days of Meat Week and the first few days of DC Meat-Free Week. There’s a good chance it will interfere with the rest of the week’s events as well.

There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan restaurants around Northern Virginia if any of those options are too far. Or, if you’re unable to make any of the events but you do venture out to visit the grocery store, there are plenty of tasty vegan recipes to try while you’re stuck at home.

If you do lose power, try these tips from the American Red Cross to keep yourself and your food safe.

Just be sure to keep warm. You can even memorialize Snowmageddon by helping a great cause. When you purchase a t-shirt from One vs. Many, founded by local guys Alex Welsh and Grant Hill, 15% of each t-shirt sale will benefit So Others Might Eat (SOME), a non-profit organization that works to help the homeless, poor, elderly, and individuals with mental illness by providing meals, housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling services.

Too bad there isn’t a DC Meat-Free Week shirt. Of course, you could settle for one of these shirts.
