Get an early start on hostess gifts and Christmas presents at the Kiln Club Holiday Sale. During the first weekend of November, over a dozen artists will be displaying their latest and greatest handmade creations for your perusal.
From clay bowls to tree ornaments and vases, there will be a large selection of clay goods at the sale. If the words glazed, fired and painted sound appealing, be sure to check out the vast array of functional stoneware and pottery.
Looking for unique jewelry for a gift this Christmas? The Kiln Club will also have ceramic baubles for sale, too.
Made up of more than 90 artists from the DMV area, members of the Kiln Club are specifically skilled with all things clay. For more of their work, stop by the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Gallery in Alexandria, where many artists are juried members. Themed shows are held every other month in the Gallery.

Vegetarians Rev Up VA Tag Push
Posted by The Editorial Desk / Monday, August 3rd, 2009

A trio of activist groups (Richmond Vegetarian Festival, Vegan Action and the Vegetarian Society of Richmond) want to drive home the message that Virginians love their vegetables.
Their plan: turning the Old Dominion into the first state to broadcast the earth-friendly lifestyle via bumper.
To do so, the groups figure they’ll need to secure 350 prepaid applications (the specialty tags cost $10) by mid-September so they can show local legislators and the Virginia DMV the project has enough public interest to go before the General Assembly next January. Assuming enough lawmakers champion the cause, supporters expect that plates would realistically go into circulation circa summer 2011.
According to spokeswoman Lesile Sanford, there’s around three dozen applications already in the works.
“We’re really just in the baby stages,” she said of the nascent publicity campaign. “We just want to let people know that we’re here.”
Meanwhile, Sanford suggested that Delegate Jennifer L. McClellan (D-Richmond) “seemed to think it was a fine idea.”
