Woodlawn and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope-Leighey House in Alexandria

Originally part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the grounds changed hands several times before landing in the hands of the National Trust. Today, the estate is a bastion composed of beautifully-kept foliage and two historic homesone build by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Way of the Tortilla

If you’ve ever had a handmade tortilla, you know they’re the lynch pin of Mexican cuisine. Torillas de harina (day are-ee-nah, flour tortillas) are deceptively simple. It’s just a bit of flour, shortening and water. How hard could it be to make your own? 

Tortillas de Harina

Ingredients: 

2 cups All-Purpose Self Rising Flour (make sure it’s Self Rising, or else you get a chalky, papery mess of a tortilla)

2 tbs. Vegetable Shortening

Hot Water

Materials:

Mixing Bowl

Rolling Pin

Cup Measure

Tablespoon

Skillet (or any large frying pan)

 

Don’t forget to build your tortilla bunker! Tortillas have to steam after they’re cooked or they will become a hard, uneatable cake of shame and failure. You can make your own tortilla warmer as shown below or buy your own. Whatever works best for you, moneybags.

Plate, paper towel and foil. Layered as shown above.

 

Now the fun begins!

Add flour.

 

Add shortening.

 

 

Mix until crumbly.

 

Crumble, crumble, crumble…

 

 

Needs more flour. And a better cook.

Add hot water, mix accordingly.

A Grocery List for the New Year

’Tis the season for your new year’s resolution. If you are anything like me, you are waiting until after the Super Bowl bash to start your new diet. So whether you have already taken the dive into health and wellness for the new year, or are kicking off your own new season after the big game, here are some foods that you should have stocked in your kitchen – and of course, that you should be eating on a regular basis!

- Lean meats
- Eggs
- Kale (or dark green and leafy veggies)
- Lentils
- Black-eyed peas
- Plain yogurt or plain Greek yogurt
- Quinoa
- Pomegranates
- Blueberries
- Apples
- Avocados

All of these foods have many properties in common. Aside from being packed with good things for you—fiber, vitamins, minerals, protein, amino acids and antioxidants to name a few—they also help reduce your risk for many diseases such as cancer, diabetes and Parkinson’s. In turn they increase your heart health, stabilize your blood sugars, increase your digestive health, give you more energy and last but not least, they all help you in your endeavor of weight loss! What’s not to like about that?

Brunching at Eat-Bar

In my book, there’s just nothing quite as good as Sunday brunch.

When it comes to the first meal of the day, I’m a firm believer in breakfast food. In the battle of breakfast food (cereal, eggs, pancakes) versus lunch food (sandwiches, salads, burgers) as the first thing in your mouth for the day on the weekends, I will always choose breakfast. (Disagree if you want, but I just can’t fathom putting a sandwich in my stomach without properly having breakfast first.)

It’s during the loved weekends when sleeping in late wins and you’re faced with the decision of taking the breakfast or lunch route that these dilemmas arise. So whoever invented brunch really figured out how to please both parties of both breakfast and lunch. Where else can you see such two separate entities bond over a mealtime table in such great harmony?

At Eat-Bar‘s Sunday brunch this weekend, that’s where!

Unfortunately, we missed the Big Screen Cartoon Brunch Series screening (it started at 11, a bit too early for myself after a late Saturday night), but were still able to gawk over the delicious sounding brunch menu while enjoying a bonus brunch amuse bouche of mini doughnuts with Nutella glaze.

Complimentary doughnuts with Nutella glaze? Mmm, yes please!

 

For me, it was a tough decision choosing between the different breakfasty options, including the sunny side up farm eggs with homemade pastrami hash, house smoked salmon, and scrambled eggs with chorizo and black beans.

I took the breakfast route (of course) and got the eggs over easy with bacon, home fries and toast.

My friend Michelle took the lunch route and got a good ol' cheddar cheeseburger.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Here you have it– breakfast and lunch, eaten together in perfect harmony for Sunday brunch!

Are You Vitamin D Deficient?

I recently took a general blood test (because I was wondering about my cholesterol and sugar level). It turns out that my blood sugar level is excellent (surprisingly) and I have good cholesterol!  But, I’m very low on Vitamin D. The nurse said that I was an 18 ng/ml, when normal is 30 ng/ml. I tried to reason with her (ignorantly, thinking that humans can only extract Vitamin D from the sun) that I had not been outside for months since it was winter and that that must contribute to the lack of Vitamin D, and she said that is true, but that an 18 ng/ml was still too low. My doctor recommended that I take a super vitamin D pill once a week for twelve weeks.

Why is Vitamin D even important?

I did a little research and it prevents chronic diseases like cancer, bone loss, hypertension, autoimmune diseases,osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease. It protects and lubricates bones, teeth and hair and helps regulate cellular grown and activity.

Also, just getting Vitamin D from the sun is not enough except if you’re from Jersey Shore.

Shiitake mushrooms, button mushrooms, salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna fish, eggs, and milk are foods rich in Vitamin D. I’m very shocked that I’m low on Vitamin D because I eat fish (specifically mackerel, salmon and tuna) very often.

A Blog Devoted to [Insert Food Here]

Serious Eats has separate blogs devoted to both hamburgers and pizza, which I think is fitting. If any two foods deserve their own blog, it’s those greasy iconic classics.

But what about the other deserving foods out there? Is anyone giving them blog love?

I searched all over the web for online odes to specific foods (the more specific the better). Some sites, like http://www.thebananablog.com/ (warning: NSFW), were . . . not quite what I thought they’d be.  Luckily, I found more than enough food fan blogs out there that fit the bill.

Here’s a short list of  ‘em:

I think I’d blog about eggs and all the delicious things you can make with them: frittatas, omelets, soufflés, scrambled eggs, soft-boiled eggs, egg salad, eggs benedict, quiche…I could probably keep that blog going for years.

Vicarious Vittles

Thought I’d have some fun this Friday and compose a dream menu from all the mouthwatering food pics posted all around the web this week.

Breakfast: crab meat and eggs — I can almost taste the sweet crab and fluffy eggs in my mind. Though I’d probably swap out the Chinese wine for some mirin (added sweetness should cut through the ginger a bit and bolster the crab).
