Holiday Gift Guide: Enticing Ideas for the Entertainer
Posted by Natalie Kaar / Tuesday, December 6th, 2011
Hello there, shoppers! If you’re excited to go holiday shopping but armed with less than ample ideas, you’re not alone. If only everyone would be forthcoming with their wish lists, right? Santa has it so easy with everyone being so specific — minus all that travel and the length of his list, I suppose.
At any rate, fret no more. Help is here. Inspiration shall abound. Your friends at SWAG have done all the homework so you don’t have to. Each weekday today through Dec. 13, score ideas for absolutely everyone on your list!
Today:
Enticing Ideas for the Entertainer
Have a friend or family member who could give Martha Stewart or “Barefoot Contessa” a run for her money? Someone who is always throwing a bash and doing so with class? Buying — or if you’re really daring (or are more artistic than moi), making — the party perfecter a gift can be especially daunting because you really, really want to deliver. Fortunately, we found more than a few gifts that could do just that — and for far less than what you’d expect. What follows are some of the standouts.
*Also check out, if you haven’t already, some of my top picks for the host and hostess as found in the November issue of Northern Virginia Magazine.
What: 10 x 14 Slate Cheese Board
Why: First of all, how fun and versatile is this? Your favorite entertainers should also enjoy it because they can take less time explaining which cheeses they picked and more time partying themselves. The bonus: It’s dishwasher-safe!
Where to Get It: Alexandria’s Red Barn Mercantile
What It’ll Cost You: $35
What: Cocktail Napkin Box by Mariposa
Why: If your dearest party perfecter is especially anal retentive about keeping the ol’ table display neat, including those oh-so-easily disheveled napkins, this attractive gift could be especially appreciated. Even if he or she is more low-key, there’s always the question as to where is best to fan the napkins; this solves it fast. After all, there are cocktails around which to wrap said napkins.
Where to Get It: The Nest Egg at Fairfax Corner
What It’ll Cost You: $44
What: Peruvian Pottery
Why: This special line of handmade Peruvian pottery is hand-cast using clay from the Andes Mountains and is microwave-, dishwasher- and oven-safe! Choose a unique gift for your favorite dinner party-loving entertainer from a full range of place settings, serving pieces and table accessories.
Where to Get It: Vienna’s Valerianne
What It’ll Cost You: Water pitcher shown is $61; set of three glasses, $53.
What: Bar Games Drink Coasters
Why: Even the host with the most likes to sit back and allow his friends lead the fun from time to time. These coasters/bar games will help them with that enjoyable endeavor.
Where to Get It: Sur La Table at Tysons Galleria
What It’ll Cost You: $12.95
What: Jingle Bell Wine Charms (Set of 10)
Why: Not only is it party season; it’s flu season. If your favorite entertainer and other friends get sick, that stops the celebrations — and fast. These festive wine charms help keep everyone out of the sick wing and center stage at all the season’s can’t-miss soirees.
Where to Get It: Crate & Barrel
What It’ll Cost You: $12.95 (makes a nice stocking stuffer or accompaniment to a nice bottle of vino)
Happy shopping!

Globetrotting Fashionista Bringing Undeniable Style to Fairfax Corner
Posted by Natalie Kaar / Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011
Hello there, shoppers!
If you were at Friday night’s tree lighting ceremony at Fairfax Corner, you may have been lucky enough to receive a $10-off coupon to Undeniable Boutique, a new store—Alicia Russman, owner, has been pushing for it to open Black Friday, exact opening still up in the air—that shall soon become your go-to. Yes, do not misplace that piece of paper!
Haven’t you always dreamed of having your store, a place that you can truly count on for holding the perfect outfit for any occasion? Well, you may soon consider Russman, a globetrotting creative director/fashionista turned retail entrepreneur, your genie in a bottle.
What lies inside the not-yet-open doors of Undeniable Boutique is a “New-York-loft-meets-runway-chic” atmosphere, with a reclaimed wood runway and galvanized pipes, along with classic to edgy merch representing standout brands Russman followed “in boutiques from Seattle to Australia.”
Soon you’ll be able to shop from lines like Dear Creatures (LA), Yumi and Uttam (London) and Deby Debo (Paris). The overall focus: “vintage-inspired classics” and “nods to the ‘70s,” with clothing, shoes, handbags, tons of jewelry, tights, and even handpicked hostess gifts (to make things all the more convenient when headed straight to a party).
Russman describes her store, which is stocking a lot of specialty wear, as a place “for women who like to dress for the occasion but not look like everyone else.” In terms of occasions, that can be an engagement party, wedding, bridal shower, baby shower, Sunday brunch, office holiday party … you name it.
And don’t think Undeniable will have an undeniable hold on your heart just for its incredible inventory and atmosphere. Russman, who had a very successful corporate career and who has scored more than a few tips from her New York antique store-owning mom, places the utmost importance on high-value customer service. Think: appointments after hours, a rewards program, home delivery, etc.
To make things even sweeter, during its opening week, the Undeniable sales team will be handing out free tees to shoppers.
See you there soon! Happy shopping!

The Turkey Day & Black Friday Cheat Sheet
Posted by Natalie Kaar / Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Black Friday & Thanksgiving Day are both promising big bargains this year! (Shutterstock.com/Johnkworks)
Hello there, shoppers! If you’re bent on bagging some big-time bargains during the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, to commence in just a few days, here’s hoping you’re resting up now. Black Friday starts a day early this year at many stores — yup, Turkey Day, before many are even expected to come out of their food comas.
That includes Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets; while Midnight Madness is planned, as in years past, some stores will be opening as early as 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Other stores opening on Thursday include Walmart, which will be opening at 10 p.m.
While it would be virtually impossible to send you all of details on the deluge of deals, here are the high points, including a few pointers on staying ahead of the pack:
The city streets, anti-mall experience:
Head to Old Town Alexandria. Many stores in the Old Town Boutique District are offering 30-percent savings from 6-8 a.m., 20-percent savings from 8-10 a.m. and 10-percent savings the rest of the day. And every OTBD shop has something very special in store. Some discounts are even bigger; for instance, Treat is offering 40-percent savings from 8-10 a.m. Plus, the city is offering free parking on Black Friday at all city-owned garages and lots, with many opening at 6 a.m. Stick around until 7 p.m. for the tree lighting and other fun holiday festivities.
FREE PARKING HOURS: Market Square Garage, 108 N. Fairfax St., open 6 a.m. on Friday until 6 a.m. on Saturday; Courthouse Square Garage, 111 S. Pitt St., open 6 a.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday; Thompson’s Alley Garage, 10 Thompson’s Alley, open 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Friday; N. Union St. Garage, 220 N. Union St., open 6 a.m. on Friday until 2:30 a.m. on Saturday; S. Henry St. Lot, 112 S. Henry St., from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday; Cameron/ Saint Asaph St. Lot, 210 N. Saint Asaph St., from 6 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Friday.
The mega-mall experience:
Here are your Black Friday sale hours (click on the mall links for the deals):
Fair Oaks Mall: 6 a.m.-10 p.m.
Fashion Center at Pentagon City: 5 a.m.- 10 p.m.
Dulles Town Center: Some stores will open as early as 5 a.m. (the rest at 6 a.m.) and as late as 11 p.m. (the rest at 10 p.m.)
Tysons Corner Center: Midnight madness, baby!
Tysons Galleria: Even the Galleria is opening early for the super-sale action, at 9 a.m., will be open until 9 p.m. And don’t miss the opening of the Gingerbread Wonderland Store, brought to us by The Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner, at 2 p.m. The life-size Gingerbread Boutique will have a variety of delights, special gift ideas and exciting culinary creations to browse while shopping.
Something in the middle:
As far as other huge sales, don’t forget about Amazon, especially if you’d like to shop in your PJs. And for something that falls between the mega-mall experience and shopping in the OTBD, don’t forget about places like Reston Town Center, Fairfax Corner and Market Common in Clarendon. Regarding the big-box stores like Walmart, Target, Best Buy and hhgregg, you might want to take a peek at theblackfriday.com, which has links to all of the associated sales flyers. And, shoppers, make sure to have your smartphone scanners ready — mucho importante!
Oh, and how could we forget about Apple! They’ll be doling out their own Black Friday deals, but don’t expect miracles. We’re usually not talking nearly free Macs or anything like that.
Happy shopping! Stay classy!

Great gifts of thanks they’re sure to love
While throwing holiday bashes can be very fun, hosting can easily become stressful this extra-hectic time of year. So how do we show those who tirelessly entertain us just how much their generosity is appreciated?
I say go beyond vino and petals—with something they’ll use again and again. One fine place to focus your shopping: Fairfax Corner’s The Nest Egg (www.shopthenestegg.com).

(Image: The Craving Project)
Those still engrossed in passe food trends will be thrilled to learn that low-fat, frozen yogurt shops–the sweets-slingers of choice from, oh say, five years ago–appear to be making a comeback/staging a last stand here in NoVA:
* Bluberi burst onto the Centreville/Clifton scene (5760 Union Mill Road, Clifton) about a month ago and have been serving up their particular brand of frozen–four main flavors: plain, bluberi (tangy, fruit-spiked blend), green tea (herbal) and rotating (mango, raspberry, strawberry, chocolate, peach cycle through for about a week); field about 2 dozen specialty toppings, including: jimmies, pomegranate seeds, diced pineapple, m&ms, etc.–and liquid (hot/iced/bubble teas, yogurt smoothies) refreshment ever since;
* La-La Land export Pinkberry is hoping its forthcoming Fairfax Corner shop–scheduled to debut at 11942 Grand Commons Avenue on Friday, October 22–will serve as a springboard for a planned invasion of the Mid-Atlantic market; and,
* South Korean-born Red Mango plans to reinforce it’s local presence–they laid down roots with outposts in Clarendon and Fredericksburg–by venturing into Vienna (431 W. Maple Ave.) and courting Shenandoah University (1460 University Drive, Winchester) and University of Mary Washington (1301 College Ave., Fredericksburg) students, in the near future.
Bring on the brain freeze!

GAR Dubs 12th Resto Ozzie’s Corner Italian
Posted by The Editorial Desk / Friday, March 19th, 2010
Great American Restaurants CEO Randy Norton has confirmed that their forthcoming Italian concept–set to debut in Fairfax Corner sometime this fall/winter–will be named Ozzie’s Corner Italian, a tribute to GAR corporate chef-cum-vice president of kitchen operations Chris Osborn.
Ozzie’s will bump GAR’s Northern Virginia restaurant holdings to an even dozen. Their preexisting properties include: Artie’s, Best Buns Bread Co., Carlyle, Coastal Flats (2), Jackson’s Mighty Fine Food & Lucky Lounge, Mike’s American, Silverado and Sweetwater Tavern (3).
Although the group had flirted with crowning the highly anticipated project Patsy’s (after Norton’s wife), Norton suggested that they had received some pushback from New York eatery/online retailer Patsy’s.
Other abandoned monikers included: “Meatball Palace” (too bad) and “Majestic Meat” (porntacular).
No word yet on who will man the burners, but Norton doesn’t seem too worried.
“I am excited about the progress to date and have no doubt the menu will be ready in plenty of time,” he said.
