SALES & NEWS: End-of-the-Year Deals

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Friday, December 30th, 2011

Hello, shoppers!

Gifts have been exchanged, and the tinsel is slowly making its way down from around the tree – the holidays might be coming to an end, but the shopping season is still alive and well.

Every shop in town, from our favorite department stores to corner boutiques, is cutting prices in the name of the New Year. And SWAG is here to shine a little light on the best, and most fashion-forward, winter sales.

Hysteria in Old Town is taking 30 percent off fall and winter merchandise starting today. The boutique’s designer labels have all been marked down, with Diane von Furstenberg, Smythe and Tory Burch just a few of the names on the winter sale rack. Hysteria’s neighbor shop The Shoe Hive is also in on the winter sale, but do make sure you fall in love with your purchase – all sale items at both stores are final sale.

Remember that Urban Chic in Fairfax is ringing in the New Year with their company-wide blowout sale Jan 2-14. Very close by, also at Fairfax Corner, Undeniable Boutique has slashed prices on dresses just in time for NYE with many marked 25 percent off.

It’s also the most wonderful time of the year: Bloomingdale’s annual After Christmas sale, of course. The clearance cuts up to 75 percent off women’s clothing, up to 50 percent off men’s, kids’, jewelry, shoes and handbags and up to 50 percent off home items. The sale’s good online and in-store through Monday and is running with Bloomie’s semi-annual handbag sale – 30 percent off everyone from Kate Spade to Marc Jacobs.

Gap is clearing out their winter collection with a 60-percent-off holiday sale. Everything from wide-leg trousers to skinny jeans to the classic’s casual cardigans and knit sweaters have been slashed.  And Gap’s sister store Banana Republic is sweetening the deal with 30 percent off sale items, online only, until Jan. 1.

Plus, holiday items are on final clearance at The Dandelion Patch — now up to 50 percent off!

Happy shopping, and saving in the New Year!

PS. Arlington’s Crystal Boutique starts their pre-spring sale Jan. 19! Check out their winter fashions from Lafayette 148, Alicia Peru and Bordado.

Style Report: Sweater Dresses

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Monday, December 19th, 2011

The sweater dress bridges the gap between seasons, adding a little winter knit to a staple look. Whether it’s sleek and simple cashmere, a classic winter pattern or a punch of color, this season’s sweater dresses have stepped up their game with extras that push them to the forefront of fashion.

Horizontal stripes – which have made a comeback from unflattering and forbidden – and chunky knits have also played into the look’s success, with colored and patterned tights perfecting the winter outfit. And these easy pieces combine the best of comfort and style all while boasting a little bit of seasonal flair.

Think back to your favorite family Christmas card. Remember that ever-so-tasteful red and green cable knit sweater, accented with the branded holiday sweater pattern and stitch? It’s better now, we promise. That holiday sweater has inched its way back onto sweater dresses of the season, making for a much more fashion-forward ensemble.

Neutral colors coupled with the stitch, like in this H&M flared knit dress ($50), keep the nostalgia at bay and make a simple oversized sweater a stand-alone favorite.

Redskins Honor 20 Local Breast Cancer Survivors at All-Star Celebration

Standing in his family’s basement and holding hair clippers, Chris Cooley slowly buzzed off his mother’s hair.

For Cooley, the longtime tight end for the Washington Redskins, this is the experience he remembers vividly from his mother’s battle with breast cancer. “In 2008, my mom was diagnosed,” says Cooley. “I can’t say I know what it’s like to go through [breast cancer] but I know it wasn’t easy for her.”

He watched as his mother dealt with every ordeal that having cancer threw her way – including the emotional impact. “[Having  breast cancer] brings many trials,” says Cooley. “One of which is how women feel about themselves.” After seeing his mother go through many ups and downs, he was inspired to give women an opportunity to temporarily put aside all of cancer’s negative energy and simply enjoy themselves.

In partnership with the breast cancer survivor Tanya Snyder, wife of Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder, and the American Cancer Society, the All-Star Survivors Celebration was created to “give women the opportunity to have a fun day,” says Cooley. On Tuesday, Cooley and his wife Christy along with several other Redskins’ wives, Mrs. Synder, and ACS representatives threw their fourth annual day of pampering and celebrating at Redskins Park for 20 local women at who are currently battling breast cancer.

“We’re giving recognition to women that are right in the thick of it, that are going through everything,” says Tanya Snyder, an NFL spokesperson for breast cancer awareness.

Women like Sara Uzel. Sara, of Arlington, Va., went to the doctor for a routine mammogram and they noticed an indentation, although nothing showed up on the mammogram. On May 1, 2011, she received an ultrasound and was diagnosed with an advanced stage of breast cancer. On May 25, she had a mastectomy. A three-and-a-half inch tumor then spread to her lymphnoids and she’s been on chemotherapy ever since.

Breast cancer does not run in her family and this was their first experience dealing with the disease. “I didn’t realize how common it was,” says Uzel. “I think your awareness peaks when you find out.” The All-Star Celebration shared even more significance to her as one of her coworkers was also in attendance. “Because of my diagnosis, she went and had a mammogram she hadn’t had for awhile. And she was diagnosed.”

The All-Star Celebration was a much needed, and deserved, break from everyday life. “This is incredible,” says Uzel. “Especially since I’m sort of halfway through and still have quite a way to go … That emotion and that hope is just very generous of everybody to offer.”

The 20 women, all from throughout the DMV, respectively, were were broken up into four groups and received four “downs” of fun. First Down was a makeover as part of Look Good, Feel Better, a free ACS-sponsored program that shows women going through cancer different beauty techniques. Next up was Second Down, a chance for the ladies to pick out a new pair of jeans, courtesy of The Gap. The women then rotated to Third Down and went with Chris Cooley on a private tour of the facilities and locker room, asking questions and posing for pictures along the way. Fourth Down gave the women an opportunity to pick out a wig and scarf to take home with them.

To add to the day’s excitement, a little overtime surprise was thrown in: each of the ladies were given a custom-made pink and burgundy Redskins jersey and a ticket to Oct. 16′s game versus the Eagles. The twenty courageous fighters will be guests on the field and will welcome the players during introductions.

Options, Options, Options

Shoppers, Happy Friday!

I hope you’re ready for some major retail therapy. Not only is this weekend time for all of the amazing events I mentioned last Friday but there are oodles of additional shop-ortunities you’re definitely going to want to explore as well!

First, there’s the Queen Bee Trunk Show and Sale, going on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m., at 1410 Cool Spring Drive in Alexandria. If you would like to attend and save up to 50 percent (of course you would), just register and you’ll be well on your way to bejeweled bliss!

Speaking of jewelry, Periwinkle of Potomac Green, not far away from Queen Bee’s hive, is hosting a Bella Designs Trunk Show today, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Alexandria is such a gold mine when it comes to jewelry isn’t it? By the way, I’m so excited, my hubby surprised me with a gorgeous Meg Carter necklace for my birthday last week! Goose Rocks and I are together at last!

Okay, enough about beautiful baubles. Is all of the sunshine making you take a second look at your shorts collection? If you don’t like what you see, you might want to take a little trip to Gap this weekend, where all adult shorts are 30 percent off, and children’s and baby shorts are buy one, get one for $10. After you purchase a pair or two, should you wonder if they look okay, visit gotryiton.com and get others’ feedback — thanks Daily Candy, for the tip!

More fixed on entertaining right now? Remember that Vienna’s Valerianne is offering 20-percent savings on placemats through the end of April! And, trust me, the placemats the store carries from Kim Seybert and others are like pieces of art — definitely worth a look!

Pregnant and completely fixed on food? Destinationmaternity.com is offering $75 restaurant gift certificates (to satisfy any craving) with purchases of $125 or more and the code “CRAVE75″!

Thinking you could use a few new bags? Both locations of The Dandelion Patch are hosting a Scout Trunk Show tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And the event promises to present shoppers with many perks. Just one of them: Spend $75 and you’ll score a free ‘Lil Slim Laptop Sleeve or Doggie Bag Lunch Tote.

And, if those weren’t enough shopping to-dos, Kate Spade goes ahead and kicks off a Friends & Family Sale, offering a 30-percent discount with the code “FRIENDLY30″!

Whew! Happy shopping!

Gainesville to Gain Dharma & Leopold’s

Hello there, shoppers! For some reason this week, a lot of shopping news seems to involve the small set. Just yesterday I learned that the popular Warrenton children’s shop Dharma & Leopold’s will be moving to Gainesville, sharing space with award-winning photographer Janie Stockton of The True Studio — whose portraits have appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show. While the new location at 7332 Atlas Walk Way is expected to open in as soon as two weeks, the original store in Warrenton will remain open until May 29.

If you’re a Warrenton resident sad to see Dharma & Leopold’s head a few miles east, at least you have about two months to stock up and save at the original location before it closes. Beginning next Saturday, April 17, during the Old Town Warrenton Spring Sidewalk Sale, through Saturday, May 29, everything in the store will be on clearance!

Happy shopping!

Ps. Some bargains everyone should enjoy now include the sale on new adult arrivals at Gap (20 percent off with code “GAPNEW20″) and these fresh markdowns from Shopbop.com!

H&M Starts Selling Garden Collection and Sales Sprout Up All Over

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Tunic, $9.99, from H&M's new Garden Collection

Hello there, shoppers! Anyone else thrilled that it’s Thursday? Not only is Friday just a day away and the weekend, just two, but it’s one of those days that is incredibly special for retail revelers like us.

Judging from my inbox, regardless of where you head today for a little retail therapy, you should find incredible inventory and stellar sales. I’ll point to several in a second, but first, I must mention the most exciting shopping event of the day:  H&M’s gorgeous new Garden Collection, which we’ve been eyeing in magazine for months, is finally available in stores!

I seriously love so many of the spring-tastic, budget-respectful, eco-friendly pieces (made from environmentally adapted materials like recycled polyester, organic cotton and organic linen) that I don’t even care if I end up spying someone else out and about in the same styles I scoop up.  Perhaps I’ll see a few of you at the Tysons store come lunch time!

Okay, now those promised sales:

Plenty of beautiful bargains are up for grabs at Bloomingdale’s, especially with the friends and family discount of 20 percent on most regular-priced and sale items, yours in stores and online until Sunday.

It’s also mega sale time at Banana Republic. For a limited time, save up to 40 percent on select spring dresses, pants, skirts, tops, accessories, etc., in stores and on the Web — plus free shipping on online orders over $150 with “BRSHIP150.”

Today is also an especially smart day to shop at smartbargains.com given that the site is offering an additional 25 percent off everything.

If you get all riled up by the Riley line at Lucky Brand, you should also prepare to get lucky. All Riley styles are now $30 off.

And, finally, if you think Kate is great, Kate Spade that is, now’s the time to go on a shopping spree; enjoy an additional 25 percent off sale items.

Yet that’s only the beginning of all the outstanding offers. Happy shopping!

Ps. Which sale are you most excited to take advantage of today? And, what’s your favorite look from the Garden Collection?
