Shopping Simplified: Gilt.com

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Gilt.com is the perfect website for those budget-minded fashionistas. Designer clothing at up to 60% off? Yes, please!

Gilt Groupe

This past weekend was the first time I’ve heard of the members-only site but Gilt Groupe has been around since 2007. The site has over three million members and is huge in Japan.

Members can preview sales on designer items from clothing, accessories, household items and more. They even have exclusive travel deals on their Jetsetter site and food deals on their Gilt Taste site. Gilt even gives you a back story on the designer and previews the sale items an hour before the sale begins on the Gilt Facebook page. Sales often start at noon so here’s another excuse to take that lunch break.

I was so curious that I decided to sign up to see exactly how the site worked. Signing up was easy, all you had to do was provide your email and a password. That’s it, you’re in. If you’re shopping on the go, they’ve got you covered on all your favorite devices with their Gilt On The Go app.

Lulu Frost, Vince, Marni and others were already on sale. Swarovski, La Victoire and more were to come.  Gilt listed the designers that were going to be on sale for the next couple days. And I was in shopping heaven. Gilt even gives unlimited $25 credits when friends members have invited to the site buy something!

I don’t know what’s simpler than free, easy sign up and access to designer brands at 60% off.

Hello there, shoppers! Oh, how I love Gilt!

Then they added awe-inspiring travel packages.

Next up was special city-specific deals (recently Washington was finally added).

And now, there’s GiltTaste, with fab deals for foodies! Currently, it’s in the beta stage (no invitation needed), and soon they’re adding wine to the magical mix!

DANGEROUS!

Happy shopping!

Great Expectations

Hi there, shoppers! Although spring doesn’t officially begin until the 20th, doesn’t the magical season seem to have already arrived in many ways? Birds are chirping, spring apparel is everywhere, we’ve seen temps in the 60s, etc. Yet even more exciting is the fact that the best is yet to come, and I’m not only talking about warmer weather. Plans to add everything from new shops to new collections abound!

For starters, on Tuesday, March 23, J.Crew is to open a new store at Fair Oaks Mall! But that’s only the beginning of the excitement to come.

Have spring beauty on the brain? It’s March Madness time at The Medical Spa at Nova! The spa is offering a buy-one-package-get-a-second-package-at-half-price deal on laser hair removal all month long, and I’m told additional beauty deals will be rolled out in the coming days that are equally as enticing. On March 18, buy 25 units of Botox® or one syringe of Juvederm® and you’ll receive a free box of Latisse®. And, from March 22 to March 26, buy any Botox or dermal filler lip treatment and you’ll receive a free Skin Medica Lip Plumper System. Just note that these special offers cannot be combined with any other deals or special offers. Also, gift certificate usage is subject to the spa’s minimum purchase policy.

Know a young guy who is a huge fan of Olympic snowboarding champion Shaun White?  Target announced earlier this week that the hero of the half-pipe is to design a new skateboarding shoe collection to be available in Target stores by August. As you may already know,Target currently carries Shaun White 4 Target clothing (for boys and young men) and his video game, Shaun White Snowboarding.

Engaged and fully wedding-focused? You do not, I repeat, you do not want to miss out on the wedding-related sample sale goodness that Gilt Groupe promises to bring to you this weekend!

Happy shopping!

Events Planned Prior to Snow Predictions

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Hey there, shoppers! Is today’s weekend forecast making you a bit blue? Same here, especially because there just about couldn’t be a better weekend in terms of the variety of events scheduled. (My heart goes out to all of the event organizers and presenters — what a headache the weather is to them!)

First, of course, Crystal Couture is scheduled to continue each evening through Saturday. I just called The Crystal City BID to see if any decisions have been made yet regarding Friday and Saturday evening. I was told that they expect to make a decision tomorrow by 2 p.m. Check twitter.com/ccbid for updates.

Fox 5 reports on Crystal Couture:

As for the legendary Old Town Boutique District’s Warehouse Sale, it’s already been rescheduled for Feb. 13, same time, same place.

When it comes to bridal events, first, there’s the Engaged! Bridal Event planned for tomorrow evening, from 5 to 10 p.m., which is to offer attendees the chance to explore four of D.C.’s top wedding venues (The Four Seasons Hotel, The Hay-Adams, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis Hotel and The Willard Intercontinental Hotel), see how each looks when all set up for a wedding and chat with the vendors who make all the magic happen. There are even to be limo buses on hand to take guests from venue to venue, thanks to Reston Limo. Tickets are $65 and are only offered online in advance. So far, it appears to be still on, but I’d call (703-485-4878) and check the Web site tomorrow to see if that’s still the case.

Also, a friend just told me about another exciting bridal event that’s planned for Saturday to which Once Wed is offering FREE tickets (reg. $25 each): The Washington D.C. Couture Wedding Consortium’s 2nd Annual Luxury Bridal Show at Decatur House. From 1 to 4 p.m., the event is to feature the latest couture designs from The Cotton Bride and Punk Rock Bride, the opportunity to chat with over 20 vendors and more. I called the Consortium (1-800-768-8814) and left a message to see about whether or not there has been a change in plans … no word yet.

Hopefully whatever plans are squashed for this weekend will be rescheduled for another time soon, in Warehouse Sale fashion.

Looking ahead further … Gossip on 23rd and Break the Cycle Young Professionals are hosting a trunk show next Thursday evening featuring the latest Gossip fashions at the neighboring Tortoise & Hare Bar & Grille. The event will honor Dating Violence Awareness Month and the Have a Heart Campaign. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and proceeds will benefit Break the Cycle, a nonprofit dedicated to combating abuse. Gossip is also donating 20 percent of profits from the event. Complimentary appetizers will be served, and Tortoise & Hare is offering various drink specials plus 20-percent discounts on all food purchases. Plus, there will be a prize drawing to win one of 10 Gossip gift bags (valued at $30 to $50). Reserve your spot today.

Ps. If you’re still feeling blue, I suggest ordering yourself or your sweetie something nice at Gilt today; shipping is free with guaranteed delivery by Feb. 14!

Abaete Ella Dress, originally $473, now $283.80 before 50-percent-off code "Friend50" (chickdowntown.com)

Good morning, shoppers! Thank goodness it’s almost Friday, right?! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been so busy that even my dreams are full of multitasking. Should you have problems getting a full night’s rest, too, and find yourself with lots of gifts to buy next week, perhaps you should make better use of your usual bedtime and shop. After all, the folks at Macy’s are promising to leave a light on for you, at least in Tysons. The Macy’s in Tysons Corner Center is one of 12 select Macy’s stores that will be open for business around the clock from next Monday, Dec. 21, at 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Prefer to not leave your shopping until next week? Here are a few offers to know about today:

First, Chickdowntown.com, I’m very sad to report, is having financial problems right now, which are explained in this blog post from the site’s owner. I, for one, am praying that the site gets a bailout. At any rate, if you’re looking for amazing deals on designer duds, you’ll certainly find them at chickdowntown.com right now; plus, you can save an additional 50 percent off with the code “Friend50″ — just note that everything is final sale, meaning absolutely no returns.

Another sale to check out is the cashmere sale at neimanmarcus.com, featuring up to 65-percent savings. The code “HURRY” will also score you free shipping and gift wrap.

If sweaters are what you’re after, you should also check out the jcrew.com sweater sale, featuring 20-percent savings, and calvinklein.com, for discounts up to 50 percent.

You’ll also find tons of free shipping offers out there today. A few examples:

Truereligionbrandjeans.com: free two-day shipping through next Monday, Dec. 21

Ralphlauren.com: Free shipping through Sunday, Dec. 20, with the code “RLSHIP9″

Cusp.com: Free shipping, today only, with the code “FESTIVE”

Piperlime.com: Free standard shipping, today only

Potterybarnkids.com: Free shipping, today only, excluding furniture shipping

And, finally, from one serious shopper to another, below are some simple tips on saving every day, things that I’ve found most helpful, perhaps you have to. Feel free to share additional tips in the comment section.

1.) If you haven’t received a special offer via e-mail from your favorite store for a while, poke around on the site and add stuff to your shopping cart. A lot of Web sites use software that tracks this activity and then send e-mails out saying something like, “We’ve noticed you still have a few items in your shopping cart at our store. Here’s a 15- percent discount to save on them the next time you visit.”

2.) Click through on special offer e-mails from your favorite stores even if you don’t plan on purchasing something right away. Companies also often send out e-mails to say something like, “We noticed you visited our site recently, but didn’t decide on an item. Perhaps this 20-percent discount code will help make the decision easier for you.”

3.) If you don’t like filling up your inbox with shopping deals, keep reading blogs like S.W.A.G. I also suggest following your favorite stores or brands on Twitter and becoming a fan of them on Facebook. Often, this is where they first post sale news, while the selection is still good.

4.) Sign up for rebate sites like Ebates or Lucky Rewards, and use the sites each time you shop online. You’d be amazed at how quickly the rebates can add up.

5.) Always search for promo codes online.

6.) To make finding a specific item super-simple, visit Web sites like Shopstyle or TheFind.

7.) Make sample sale sites like Billion Dollar Babes, Editor’s Closet, Ideeli, Gilt Groupe and Rue La La your best friends.

8.) When shopping in stores and you realize you forgot your shopping pass at home, just tell the cashier that. I’ve never had a cashier refuse to scan the one by the register. It never hurts to ask.

Ps. Don’t forget about all of the shopping deals and other delights to be had locally tonight!

Julian Chair, available at slobproof.com (Slobproof! with Crypton)

Good morning, shoppers! Here’s hoping you’re not too tired from shopping at Shecky’s — can’t wait to get there tonight — because there are lots of other exciting shopping experiences awaiting you.

First of all, here are some wonderful web sales I bet you’re going to want to scoop up today:

–At potterybarnkids.com, 30 to 75 percent savings on select items site-wide

–At katespade.com, an additional 25 percent discount on sale items

–At skinstore.com, 20 percent off everything with the code “OCT20″

–At chickdowntown.com, 35 percent savings site-wide with the code “DESSERT35″ (in honor of National Dessert Day)

–At francescascollections.com, a 30 percent discount on jewelry with an apparel purchase

Also, did you get the memo that Gilt Groupe is expanding again? This time the fabulous sample sale group is launching a site for men, GiltMen, on Oct. 19. Not only is that exciting for the fellas, but we won’t have to share our Gilt with them — gotta love undivided attention. Plus, it will soon be super-easy to shop among Gilt Groupe’s various sites, including GiltFuse, with one shopping cart.

And, if that isn’t enough to excite you, perhaps this is: Nationally-recognized local designer Debbie Wiener, whose work has been featured in The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and Good Housekeeping, has just launched a new furniture line that is both stylish and super-durable! The new Slobproof! with Crypton line, encompassing a wide range of designs from classic to mod and over 500 fabric options, is made for people who want attractive furniture but also don’t want to have to worry about spills when sitting on it and sipping some Cabernet, or wear and tear from kids being kids or pets being pets.

Also to love about the line: It’s quite affordable with the stain-proof chairs starting at $499 and the sofas at $999, and all of the pieces — featuring environmentally sensitive materials like FSC-certified hardwood frames — are fabricated in the U.S., utilizing the quality construction techniques Wiener learned from her dad. In other words, Slobproof! with Crypton is for those who want beautiful, built-to-last furniture but aren’t willing to fork out over $10,000 for an heirloom-quality sofa.

Items from the exciting new line may be purchased at slobproof.com or by calling Pugrant Associates at 202-863-0050. And if you’re like me and insist on sitting on a sofa or chair before plunking down dough for it, no worries, the collection is featured in Wiener’s sports lounge at The Washington Design Center’s Fall Design House through Dec. 12.

Simple Ways to Save Every Day

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Antonia Floral Bloomer Set; now $26.24, originally $45 (ralphlauren.com)

Antonia Floral Bloomer Set; now $26.24, originally $45 (ralphlauren.com)

Good morning, shoppers! Here’s hoping you all had a wonderful weekend and were able to check off those shopping to-dos. If not, no worries, there’s still time to complete missions #1 and #2.

As for my weekend, I spent a lot of time at a certain area car dealership, and I’ll tell you what, the news reports aren’t misleading; the “Cash for Clunkers” program is a huge hit! I witnessed the craziness firsthand. The sales guy my hubby and I were chatting with (who had worked until 1:30 a.m. the day before) said that one of his fellow salesmen sold seven cars the previous Saturday. Then again, not surprising — what an incentive!

At any rate, that program got me thinking about other amazing ways to save that don’t get as much attention, but can equal a lot more cash in our wallets from week to week, month to month and year to year. After all, let’s face it; we all receive a lot of mail, electronic and otherwise. Even for a gal who loves, loves, loves and writes about shopping daily, it can be difficult to remember all of the different tools through which to bag a bargain. Yet if we really pay attention, there aren’t many circumstances in which we must pay full price.

Of course just about every fashionista knows about amazing designer sample sale sites like Rue La La, Gilt Groupe, Ideeli, Billion Dollar Babes, etc., and saves during sales like the Ralph Lauren online sale which ends today. But did you realize that you can score amazing discounts at all kinds of local and national retailers and on all kinds of services with things like USAA Membership (available to military members and their families), including amazing car deals well under invoice and discounts on home alarm systems? Or have you discovered all the savings that are in store for you as a AAA member, including new savings at Banana Republic Factory Stores and Gap Outlet?

If you’re a member of either or both associations, make sure to take advantage of all of the membership rewards; they really ad up! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been shocked at just how significant, varied and widely available the discounts are. It seems obvious, but the key is to ask about them.

But how about you … any easy tips? What are some of the simple ways you save significantly? Do you make your coffee at home instead of heading to Starbucks every morning? Do you go through Ebates before placing any web orders? What are your savings standbys?
