Style Sense: Heidi Kallett

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Hello, shoppers!

This special Thanksgiving installment of Style Sense is about Heidi Kallett, president and CEO of The Dandelion Patch with stores in Reston, Vienna, Leesburg and Georgetown — and a fifth location to open at National Harbor early next year.

We were excited to see how the super-busy entrepreneur and mom manages to always go from event to event with a megawatt smile and enviable style.  And Kallett was kind enough to share the code — mainly, stay classy.

Q. How would you describe your fashion sense?

A. Very easily I am Charlotte from ‘Sex and the City.‘ I like the finer things in life, but I’m far more of a traditionalist than a fashionista. I like styles that span years as opposed to up to the minute. A woman’s figure is gorgeous; she doesn’t need to show a ton of skin to be beautiful.

Q. Does your fashion sense reflect that of your stores?

A. Very much so, yes. Our brand is very much a Charlotte brand. I’m a walking, living, breathing testimony to the styles you would find at The Dandelion Patch.

Q. What designers do you like best?

A. Elie Tahari, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Nanette Lepore.

Q. What fashion item can’t you live without?

A. My pearl earrings, I wear them almost every day and they go with everything; they’re never inappropriate and never go out of style. I got them from my husband on our wedding day.

Q. What’s a trend you live by?

A. I’m always cold. I love a long boot; it keeps me warm and stylish at the same time. You can dress them up and down.

Q. What’s a trend you hate?

A. Showing your undergarments; they’re called undergarments for a reason. In the summer in particular, I think bra straps should be hidden.

Q. When did you first get into fashion?

A. Isn’t every girl into fashion? Clearly, when I was young. I think I’m slightly different in my fashion idols are slightly different than most: Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn. I’ve always admired exquisite taste, and it comes so naturally to them.

Q. Favorite fashion quote?

A. Coco Chanel: “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”

Q. Of your fashion models, who exemplifies style the most?

A. Jackie O. Grace Kelly is another one. Princess Diana.

Q. What’s a fashion mantra that you disagree with?

A. I disagree with the saying ‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it’ … leave something to the imagination.

Thanks, Heidi. Here’s to keeping it classy.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Style Report: Mixing Summer With Fall

Posted by alexandra / Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Hello, shoppers! I know it’s hard to believe with record-breaking temps over 100 degrees last weekend and humidity at its worst, but fall is actually right around the corner. And while we’re far from digging out the boots and jackets that are staples during the fall season, now is the perfect time to start thinking about some great summer to fall transition pieces. Saying goodbye to summer doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye to all of your favorite summer styles!

Check out some great ways to turn summer looks into fall ones:

This fall, get ready to see tons of military-esque looks. Soften the style by pairing it with one of your feminine lace blouses.

Lucky Brand Unit Military Jacket, $99

If you thought bright colors were just for summer, think again. Transition your brightly colored skirts by incorporating fall colors, like oranges and reds.

Kate Spade 'Meredith' Skirt, $192

So it’s warm during the day and chilly at night. Add a pretty scarf to any outfit to give it some extra flare… not to mention extra warmth.

Lilly Pulitzer 'Shorely Blue Pirates Bootyniere' Scarf, $118

It’s official: leggings are here to stay. And they just happen to be a great layering piece under your favorite summer dress or skirt. Pair them with some heels to keep the look classy!

Nordstrom Capri Leggings, $18

Ankle boots are the perfect way to start letting go of summer sandals. They’re easy to wear with skirts, sundresses, leggings… you name it.

Style Report: Brighten Up With Corals And Oranges

Posted by alexandra / Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Hello there, shoppers! Summer is a season filled with sun, surf and tanning. So what better time than while you’re lying poolside, sipping a brightly colored drink to try out a new, bold look for your wardrobe? This season’s new favorite colors are variations on corals and oranges. They’re bright, playful and eye-catching, and even better, you can make it work at the beach, in the office or out at night. Take it slow by wearing a pair of fun, coral earrings or adding a brightly-colored sweater to spice up your everyday look! And if you’re daring, incorporate the color into your wardrobe with a fun sundress, a vintage blouse or even a pair of shorts.

A few great ways to wear corals and oranges:

Sonia dress, $48 (Gossip on 23rd) Dress it down with a neutral blazer for the office and dress it up with a pair of heels for drinks afterwards!

Paper Bag Waist Shorts, $39.95 (Gap) A relaxed fit and crisp, clean look- and affordable too!

Earring Trio, $3.80 (Forever 21) An easy way to start wearing coral, not to mention a great deal!

Kate Spade New York 'Irene' Flower Cardigan, $265 (Nordstrom) So very versatile!

Madison Marcus Infinite Blouse, $238 (Shopbop.com) Wear this light blouse on a picnic with friends (ps. peasant blouses are back!)

Good morning, shoppers! Here’s hoping you all had a terrific holiday weekend with all of those who you love most — and that you enjoyed Sally’s posts as much as I did last week. Just in case you’re excited for the next big holiday celebration coming up this Thursday but nowhere near what you’d call “prepared for it” in terms of your wardrobe, here a few special offers that may just wow you:

First of all, the After-Holiday Sale at Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets is going on now through Sunday, Jan. 3. Some stores you’ll definitely want to visit for some festive frocks and accessories: BCBG Max Azria (featuring 30 to 70 percent savings store-wide), Kate Spade (offering 30 percent off each shopper’s entire purchase), Maidenform (offering 50 percent off select bras, plus additional savings on shapewear and underwear). Note: All stores are open until 9 p.m. through Wednesday, until 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Then again, if you’re forced to shop online, no worries, you’ll also find oodles of outstanding options. Check out the incredible designer dresses available on shopbop.com, for starters. You’ll also want to explore the beautiful bounty at cusp.com and at nicolemiller.com, which is now offering free express shipping through noon on Wednesday.

Looking for even bigger bargains? Arden B is offering 30 percent off select dresses plus $2 2-Day Shipping online.

As for shoes to complete your lovely look, you should have no problem finding hard-to-resist, absolutely stunning stilettos all over the place. I especially suggest exploring endless.com (featuring many styles now offered at up to 45 percent off plus free overnight shipping), theshoehive.com (yes, the Alexandria gem now offers online shopping) and Neiman Marcus and neimanmarcus.com (prepare to drool!).

Friday Shopping Fix

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Friday, August 28th, 2009

Tim Gunn, to appear at Tysons Galleria Saturday, Sept. 19 (papermag.com)

Tim Gunn, to appear at Tysons Galleria on Saturday, Sept. 19 for "All Access: Fashion" (papermag.com)

Good morning, shoppers! Don’t you just love Fridays?! Me too, especially when I have a whole bunch of juicy shopping news to share! Then again, it can be hard to know where to begin in writing this blog.

I suppose I’ll start with some of today’s simply irresistible sales:

Is it time to shake up your beauty routine or stock up on all of your favorite beauty products? Skinstore.com is offering 20 percent off sitewide through Sept. 1 with the code “20AUG” at checkout.

Dying to buy a new fall trench or some fall dresses? Lord & Taylor is offering the opportunity to save big-time on such purchases during the store’s BIG sale. With the promo code “BIG” or this savings pass, you’ll save 15 percent on regular and sale items, 25 percent on clearance merchandise.

Looking for fabulous freebies? The Georgetown Cusp is offering a free gift with every Alice & Olivia purchase tomorrow.

Thinking your handbag collection has lost some of its luster? Today is the last day to save up to 75 percent on Kate Spade handbags and more, plus score free shipping, during the Sample Sale.

Been missing Bath & Body Works’ aromatherapy body mist? The store has brought back the much-loved product in five of its most popular scents — Lavender Chamomile, Lavender Vanilla, Jasmine Vanilla, Eucalyptus Spearmint and Black Currant Vanilla. Another reason to visit B&BW now: the Stock Up and Save event.

Does no store bring a smile to your face like Bloomies? During the Black & White Sale, going on now through Sunday, you can save up to 40 percent off and help the store benefit amfAR.

Other need-to-know-now shopping news:

Sept. 17-19, Tysons Galleria will host “All Access: Fashion,” a sure-to-be-fabulous charity event benefiting YouthAIDS, to include runway shows featuring luxury apparel from Galleria stores, in-store trunk shows, wine tastings, makeovers and much more, including special appearances by fashion icons including Tim Gunn from Project Runway and Frederique Van der Wal! I cannot thank the awesome Melanie Amoss of Salon Bleu, who will be doing hair and makeup at the event, enough for sharing the scoop.

Speaking of Salon Bleu, you’re going to want to clear your calendar now on October 4 and call the salon for an appointment: 202-333-BLEU (2538). Why? That’s when the remarkable salon will host “Cuts for the Cure,” a very special event to raise funds for the Maryland affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which directly benefits area residents. The charity, very close to the hearts of the Salon Bleu staff, will receive 100 percent of proceeds from the cut-a-thon! Don’t want to get your hair cut? You can still help the cause. Schedule a blow-dry and styling or make a donation.

And, finally, the Cash for Clunkers program may have been scrapped for now, but according to the A Girl Must Shop blog and Business Week, come fall we’ll welcome Cash for Refrigerators, a program to encourage shoppers to purchase high-efficiency models, which is already receiving a lot of criticism.

Exciting New Exclusives at Major Retailers

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Friday, August 14th, 2009

Good morning, shoppers. Love discovering spankin’ new merchandise? Of course you do, so you’re really in for a treat.

Already in Stores

If you love Rachel Roy’s designs but can’t afford the fashionable frocks, you should love the talented designer’s new capsule collection, “Rachel Rachel Roy,” offered exclusively at Macy’s. As you’ll see for yourself, each item costs less than $150.

As for those of you always on the hunt for some just-right jeans that don’t cost an arm and a leg, you may now find exactly what you’re seeking at Gap. That’s thanks to the store’s new premium denim line,  “1969.”  Here are the options for both men and women. You’ll see that everything in the line is currently $20 off. (Speaking of jeans, if you’re 21-years old or older, make sure to enter Martin & Osa’s “Denim Fit for All Sweepstakes” for a chance to win a $1,500 gift card!)

Debuting This Weekend

Tomorrow, Aug. 15, Nordstrom is unveiling an exclusive line of tees, fleece and dresses from U.S. manufacturer Jen’s ideas featuring designs by Artist Todd Parr, well-known for his best-selling children’s picture books like “The Mommy Book,” “The I Love You Book” and “The Peace Book.” Similar to his books, the apparel (designed for boys and girls, ages 18 mos. to six years) utilizes Parr’s bright, quirky images that not only tickle any kid’s funny bone but expose children to meaningful messages like preserving the environment. Fortunately for Parr fans, the Tysons store is one of a select few chosen to sell the line.

Can’t wait to see the looks? Here’s a preview:

Planet Color by Todd Parr, available at the Tysons Nordstrom store (Alan Weissman)

And, finally, Saks is rolling out a new fragrance on Sunday. The floral oriental scent from Parlux Fragrances and designer Josie Natori, best known for her gorgeous lingerie designs, is named Natori by Josie Natori. The fragrance opens with a bouquet of fresh rose petals enriched by deep, dark plum notes; features a heart of ylang ylang, purple peony and night-blooming jasmine; and finishes with black patchouli, amber and a hint of satin musk. Natori says of her namesake scent “For me, this fragrance is a journey like no other,” explaining that its essence evolves from the body to the soul of a woman. See if you agree next time you scour the cosmetics department.

Ps. Kate Spade fans, don’t forget to check out her new clothing line — so fun!

6126 Collection "Grace" leggings, $68 (6126collection.com)

6126 Collection "Grace" leggings, $68 (6126collection.com)

Hey there, shoppers! Happy Friday!

So that you may make the most of your weekend, which you’ve probably been looking forward to since that first alarm beep on Monday morning, here’s a shopping to-do list that will allow you to snag some absolutely super deals while leaving plenty of time for other weekend delights.

1) Finally round up all of the jeans you bought that never really fit, the ones that are too short given your shoe choices and any other denim in good condition that could better serve someone else.

1 a) Head to Tysons Corner Center, rounded up denim in tow. Through August 13, during “The Great Denim Event,” when you donate new or gently worn denim, you’ll help benefit Habitat for Humanity and, as a reward, receive special deals at over 25 Tysons stores.

1b) Reserve space on your calendar now on August 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., when you’ll want to help Tysons wrap up the denim drive, assisting in sorting and packing the donations, and receive expert advice on finding the perfect jeans to suit your genes.

2) Make your way to Leesburg.

2a) First stop: Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets. The Back-to-School Fall Preview Sale is going on through Monday, Aug. 3, which equals prime time to score some serious bargains, like an additional 40 percent off purchases at Kate Spade.

2b) Second stop: Madisonbelle, where now until Saturday evening all markdowns you find will be 50 to 75 percent off, including items from Joe’s Jeans, 7 for All Mankind, Free People and Sanctuary.

3) Workout your creative mind.  Lindsay Lohan’s popular 6126 Collection has teamed up with FabSugar for an exclusive leggings design contest. Aspiring designers: If you submit the winning design, which can be summitted in any form, you’ll receive $1,000 and 6126 leggings. Here are all the details.
