Style Sense: Heidi Kallett

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Hello, shoppers!

This special Thanksgiving installment of Style Sense is about Heidi Kallett, president and CEO of The Dandelion Patch with stores in Reston, Vienna, Leesburg and Georgetown — and a fifth location to open at National Harbor early next year.

We were excited to see how the super-busy entrepreneur and mom manages to always go from event to event with a megawatt smile and enviable style.  And Kallett was kind enough to share the code — mainly, stay classy.

Q. How would you describe your fashion sense?

A. Very easily I am Charlotte from ‘Sex and the City.‘ I like the finer things in life, but I’m far more of a traditionalist than a fashionista. I like styles that span years as opposed to up to the minute. A woman’s figure is gorgeous; she doesn’t need to show a ton of skin to be beautiful.

Q. Does your fashion sense reflect that of your stores?

A. Very much so, yes. Our brand is very much a Charlotte brand. I’m a walking, living, breathing testimony to the styles you would find at The Dandelion Patch.

Q. What designers do you like best?

A. Elie Tahari, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Nanette Lepore.

Q. What fashion item can’t you live without?

A. My pearl earrings, I wear them almost every day and they go with everything; they’re never inappropriate and never go out of style. I got them from my husband on our wedding day.

Q. What’s a trend you live by?

A. I’m always cold. I love a long boot; it keeps me warm and stylish at the same time. You can dress them up and down.

Q. What’s a trend you hate?

A. Showing your undergarments; they’re called undergarments for a reason. In the summer in particular, I think bra straps should be hidden.

Q. When did you first get into fashion?

A. Isn’t every girl into fashion? Clearly, when I was young. I think I’m slightly different in my fashion idols are slightly different than most: Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn. I’ve always admired exquisite taste, and it comes so naturally to them.

Q. Favorite fashion quote?

A. Coco Chanel: “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”

Q. Of your fashion models, who exemplifies style the most?

A. Jackie O. Grace Kelly is another one. Princess Diana.

Q. What’s a fashion mantra that you disagree with?

A. I disagree with the saying ‘If you’ve got it, flaunt it’ … leave something to the imagination.

Thanks, Heidi. Here’s to keeping it classy.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Style Report: Mixing Summer With Fall

Posted by alexandra / Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Hello, shoppers! I know it’s hard to believe with record-breaking temps over 100 degrees last weekend and humidity at its worst, but fall is actually right around the corner. And while we’re far from digging out the boots and jackets that are staples during the fall season, now is the perfect time to start thinking about some great summer to fall transition pieces. Saying goodbye to summer doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye to all of your favorite summer styles!

Check out some great ways to turn summer looks into fall ones:

This fall, get ready to see tons of military-esque looks. Soften the style by pairing it with one of your feminine lace blouses.

Lucky Brand Unit Military Jacket, $99

If you thought bright colors were just for summer, think again. Transition your brightly colored skirts by incorporating fall colors, like oranges and reds.

Kate Spade 'Meredith' Skirt, $192

So it’s warm during the day and chilly at night. Add a pretty scarf to any outfit to give it some extra flare… not to mention extra warmth.

Lilly Pulitzer 'Shorely Blue Pirates Bootyniere' Scarf, $118

It’s official: leggings are here to stay. And they just happen to be a great layering piece under your favorite summer dress or skirt. Pair them with some heels to keep the look classy!

Nordstrom Capri Leggings, $18

Ankle boots are the perfect way to start letting go of summer sandals. They’re easy to wear with skirts, sundresses, leggings… you name it.

Style Report: Brighten Up With Corals And Oranges

Posted by alexandra / Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Hello there, shoppers! Summer is a season filled with sun, surf and tanning. So what better time than while you’re lying poolside, sipping a brightly colored drink to try out a new, bold look for your wardrobe? This season’s new favorite colors are variations on corals and oranges. They’re bright, playful and eye-catching, and even better, you can make it work at the beach, in the office or out at night. Take it slow by wearing a pair of fun, coral earrings or adding a brightly-colored sweater to spice up your everyday look! And if you’re daring, incorporate the color into your wardrobe with a fun sundress, a vintage blouse or even a pair of shorts.

A few great ways to wear corals and oranges:

Sonia dress, $48 (Gossip on 23rd) Dress it down with a neutral blazer for the office and dress it up with a pair of heels for drinks afterwards!

Paper Bag Waist Shorts, $39.95 (Gap) A relaxed fit and crisp, clean look- and affordable too!

Earring Trio, $3.80 (Forever 21) An easy way to start wearing coral, not to mention a great deal!

Kate Spade New York 'Irene' Flower Cardigan, $265 (Nordstrom) So very versatile!

Madison Marcus Infinite Blouse, $238 (Shopbop.com) Wear this light blouse on a picnic with friends (ps. peasant blouses are back!)
