Soiree: Fashion’s Night Out Plus
Posted by Natalie Kaar / Friday, August 12th, 2011
Hello there, shoppers! Sept. 8 Fashion’s Night Out returns to fashionable cities around the world for one very special night celebrating the art of fashion and the tremendous joy it brings. While NYC is the epicenter here in the states for the night’s festivities, the Metro-D.C. area, NoVA in particular, is not about to let our neighbors to the north have all the fun.
Actually, thanks to Alexandria’s BeautyFull Boutique and others, this year even brings a special soiree for NoVA’s plus-sized set: FNO Plus.
From 6-11 p.m. on Sept. 8, the store will play host to some of the most talked-about designers from Full-Figured Fashion Week. To be featured: high-end fashions from Curvysta, New York’s popular Pop Up Plus and accessory powerhouses Ear Candy and NickyB’s.
Plus, Fashion’s Night Out Plus will welcome the unveiling of the Arturo Rios Fall Hat Collection. Rios is known worldwide for his couture coifs, which you may have seen Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, among other celebs, sporting in your favorite glossies.
FNO Plus has also invited celebrity stylist and designer Rafael Cox of “Project Runway” Season 9; WPGC on-air personality Poet from the Sunday Brunch; Mrs. Jewell Green, owner of the Posh Boutique; comedian Queen Aishah and several other VIPs. Also, the event will include raffles every hour on the hour — and FNO Plustinis.

It’s been a hot second since my last pop culture post! I’ve been busy dodging the heat at my new neighborhood’s pool. Here’s what’s been going on in the world while I’ve been M.IA.
The iHeartRadio Music Festival was announced on July 11. I heard ads on HOT 99.5 and WMZQ that marketed it as ”the biggest live music event in radio history.” What this elusive event actually was stayed a secret until Ryan Seacrest gave the syndicated announcement that it was an “iHeartRadio Music Festival” featuring Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Steven Tyler, Black Eyed Peas, Kenny Chesney, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, Jane’s Addiction, Nicki Minaj, John Mayer, David Guetta, Rascal Flatts, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, Sublime with Rome, Usher, Sting and more. *Gasp for air.* This event will take place on September 23 and 24 in Las Vegas. Now, I know what you’re thinking. ‘What do I care? I’m not going all the way to Vegas.’ Hold your horses. Let me get to the iHeartRadio part. The concert is going to be streamed live on iHeartRadio.com and via the iHeartRadio app, which will have a new version available for download just in time for the concert. I’ll be watching for sure! People who wanted to attend the concert in person were able to get pre-sale tickets by liking iHeartRadio’s Facebook page. Regular sale tickets were supposed to go on sale today, but they sold out within 10 minutes of the pre-sale starting! Ten minutes!
I don’t know if any of you have gotten a hold of a Starbucks trenta (31 oz. of caffeine-heaven) yet, but I recently found this infographic that shows the trenta is 16 ml. bigger than the average human stomach. The trenta sounds like a bad idea for car trips. I’ll stick with my grande iced caramel macchiato, thank you.
Here’s a game I stumbled upon yesterday. It’s called Guess-the-Google. It shows you a group of 16 photos, and you have 20 seconds to guess what word was Googled to get them to come up. It’s extremely addictive so watch out! I know what I’ll be doing this weekend.
A few more juicy tidbits for you:
Lindsay Lohan says she can’t pay for court-ordered counseling. Really?!
A 17-year-old Florida boy murders his parents at his house and then throws a party. So not OK.
Couple tries to sell their baby for $25 in Wal-Mart parking lot… They were on meth.
“Relaxation drinks” with melatonin may be the trend that kicks energy drinks to the curb.
And… don’t kill me, but I’ve got Rebecca Black’s new single “My Moment” for you here. I’d say it’s of slightly higher quality than “Friday.” Her voice is a tad bit less nasally and she does throw a few mediocre Britney Spears moves in there. Basically, the song tells everyone who made fun of her to look at her now. She’s “doing big things, things you never dreamed of.” Her mom is even in the music video. In summary, it’s kind of a song about the song. It scores low on my coolness scale, but apparently not everyone’s. The music video has been on YouTube for four days and already has almost 13 million views. Craziness!
Happy Friday Everyone!

So that’s what the Mad Hatter was drinking

Perhaps you found yourself perplexed recently in the aisles of Whole Foods while searching for your favorite brands of Kombucha Tea. Or perhaps you’ve never heard of the drink. It’s a fermented tea which some claim as a panacea for a range of physical afflictions from hair loss to alcoholism. Whether valid claims or no, my interest is piqued to taste it just as it is being pulled off the shelves faster than you can say leggo-my-kombucha.

The problem is that the product is under suspicion for containing an uncontrollable alcoholic content. Popular brands such as Synergy may continue to ferment in the bottle and thus raise the alcoholic content level above what the label claims to be under .5%. Well, the Treasury Department calls it a problem, I’d prefer to label it as a semantics issue or a gift that keeps giving. The issue is not only a misleading label for consumers, but also that if the content increases over the .5% level it is subject to taxes along with other alcoholic beverages.
To clarify, the drinks are under review for labeling concerns rather than health and safety violations – unless you are in the habit of driving with a glass of kombucha on the rocks, that is.
And if you were thinking to just look elsewhere for your Long Island Kombucha cravings, the bad news is that other stores have pulled most brands off the shelves as well. The good news is that the Kombucha Wonder Drink remains because its pasteurization process guarantees it is within the regulations. You can find this brand at your local MOM’s Organic Market.
Until further notice, it looks like the only other resource is brewing it in the bathtub – but where will we put the moonshine?
