Shop Local Alexandria Campaign

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Shop Local Alexandria Campaign Good afternoon, shoppers! Things are really heating up, so I’m hoping you’ll take a break from the warm weather and cool down with the refreshing news I have for you today.

On Tuesday night, I had the pleasure of attending an event promoting the “Shop Local Alexandria” campaign at the Lorien Hotel and Spa in Alexandria. For those of you who haven’t heard about the campaign, its purpose is to encourage Alexandria residents to concentrate their shopping and spend their money at locally owned businesses. As I learned at the event, this campaign benefits both you and the community because buying from locally owned businesses actually circulates more money throughout the community.

According to the campaign’s website, “For every $100 spent in a local store, $68 will stay in the community. And that’s just one of 10 reasons provided for shopping locally.

This charming event introduced me to many of the Old Town Boutique District (OTBD) shop owners who were all eager to share what their stores have to offer all of you fabulous shoppers out there! Here are some of the events that are happening this month:

–Starting next Friday, June 11, the OTBD will be hosting the Summer Shopping Stroll. Throughout the weekend, all 28 boutiques of the OTBD will feature special discounts, gifts and raffle prizes, and host all kinds of fun events!

–Periwinkle kicks off their summer trunk show series this week! The contemporary clothing store will host a trunk show every Thursday in June, each week featuring a new designer. Designers include Jennifer Reale, Anni Kuan and Before and Again.

–The Little Monogram Shop is offering a 10-percent off sale this month for sending your children to camp.

Hooray for Books! is turning two, and throwing a birthday party on Saturday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. I’m told you can expect balloons, face painting and a special storytime visit from picture book favorite, Ladybug Girl!

–And, the summer sale has begun at The Shoe Hive!

These events sound like a great way to kick off  the summer! For more information about the campaign, go to www.shoplocalalexandria.com. The website, which launched on Tuesday, gives you information on how you can get involved, and features blogs by Alexandria residents who wish to share their local shopping experiences.

Cheers to shopping local!
