Sure Things: The Laundry POD

Posted by Hilary Adleberg / Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

This eco-friendly appliance offers an alternative to the traditional task of hand washing your delicates in the sink and ringing them out with a towel. Personally, I dread hand washing my delicate garments. I think it’s all the preparation and attention that makes the process so unappealing to me. So when I found The Laundry POD I thought my prayers had been answered. I did find the apparatus to be helpful, but for a couple different reasons than originally expected.

The POD can fit up to 10 garments. (Photo courtesy: thelaundrypod.com)

The POD has garnered lots of positive attention from the eco-friendly community because it doesn’t require any electricity. The invention was conceptualized because the inventors learned that women were actually buying Salad Spinners to wash their delicates. This should explain the resemblance between the two gadgets. To me, the Laundry POD is just a pimped-out Salad Spinner that tosses a different kind of green in the mix. It saves money on energy bills and also utilizes less water.

The POD uses 1/5 the amount of detergent required for regular washers and only uses six liters of water. (Photo courtesy: thelaundrypod.com)

But heed my warning, satisfaction may differentiate depending on lifestyle and desired purpose. If you so chose to use the Laundry POD as an alternative to washing a small load of clothes in the washing machine then great! You will save water and electricity by doing so—but may have to sacrifice a couple more minutes toward the task. It’s highly recommended for dorm life and camping.

Replacing the chore of hand washing however—though I did find it to be more efficient—took about the same amount of water. Following The Laundry POD steps did deduct some time off the traditional task of hand washing in the sink, and I definitely appreciated the engineering and product design. The POD eliminates the towel drying step and instead incorporates the spinning feature that requires just a little elbow grease. All-in-all I thought that the Laundry POD was more efficient for hand washing delicates and more economical for cleaning small loads of laundry. You can buy The Laundry POD at retailers like amazon.com, Macy’s, The Home Depot, HSN and the PODS’s own website. It retails for about $99.95, but prices may vary depending on vendor.

Happy shopping and feel free to let me know what you think of the machine!

Shopping Simplified: Shopkick App

Posted by alexandra / Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Hello, shoppers! This week’s Shopping Simplified is about the Shopkick app: a must-have for Android and iPhone owners.

www.shopkick.com

This app allows you to find exclusive, must-have deals at great stores, like Macy’s, Crate and Barrel, Target and more. Select your fav stores and Shopkick will keep you posted on everything going on there.

But here’s the kicker (pun intended…). If you visit any of the app’s partner stores, even if you just check-in without buying anything, you earn great savings, ranging from cool gift cards to free movie tickets and more.

Seriously, all you have to do is walk in to any one of the stores (a few more examples? Sports Authority, Wet Seal, Best Buy), wait a few seconds with the app open, and then leave with new rewards!

The points you collect are displayed in “kicks.” The more kicks you have, the more rewards. You can unlock iTunes gift cards, restaurant vouchers, gift cards to your fav stores and tons more.

It’s super easy to earn kicks and reap the benefits!

Happy Shopping!

Macy’s A-Go-Go

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

On July 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., “Macy’s Chefs A-Go-Go” will be rolling into Eastern Market in D.C. as one of the many cities it plans to stop at during its nationwide tour. This is Macy’s first national food truck tour and will showcase a different chef from Macy’s Culinary Council at each stop. At the stop in the district, the food truck will be featuring Chef Marcus Samuelsson who will be cooking up his signature dishes. (No word on what those signature dishes are yet, but you can find out some possible recipes he may be using here.) In a nutshell, Samuelsson is the executive chef and owner of Red Rooster Harlem, won the “Top Chef Masters” title in 2010, and is the author of a few cookbooks as well as one iPad app.

What is the best part about this event? Everything Samuelsson will be cooking will be given out for free. Yes you heard me, free. However, Macy’s will also be collecting donations for Feeding America®, a domestic hunger relief charity, so please donate what you can.

On top of free food, attendees can also receive a free gift at each stop with the following steps. “Like” Macy’s on Facebook, or follow Macy’s on Twitter and the Macy’s Culinary Council on twitter and tweet using the hashtag #macyschefs. (While supplies last.)

Here is the address for anyone who is interested in attending:
Eastern Market
225 7th Street Southeast
Washington D.C. 20003

For more information, please visit the event website here.
