America’s most powerful people in food: the top 10 slots are dominated by corporate America (Monsanto, McDonalds, Walmart) and the bottom 10 slots are filled with crusaders (Bittman, United Farm Workers, PETA). [The Daily Meal]

Michael Landrum must get bored easily. He started a new concept (is it the fourth one in so many months?) with Retro Ray’s, intended as overflow seating for the original Ray’s the Steaks, but with an emphasis on higher-end liquors and cognacs. The same menu will be found at both Ray’s, save for the “retro” (aka 2003) prices at Retro Ray’s. (PS-Ray’s the Steaks at East River opened this weekend.)  [ARLnow.com, WCP]

One Week of Heaven in 2011

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Carnivores rejoice! “The Holiday That Time Forgot” is coming to the D.C. area once again after last year’s successful inaugural celebration. The festivities are scheduled to begin Sunday Jan. 30, but there will be six more chances to participate at restaurants around the region. The grand finale takes place on Super Bowl Sunday at someone’s home. Meat Week is actually in it’s sixth year of existence. Started in Tallahassee, Fla. in 2005, it has now grown to 16 other cities.  London has even joined in on the fun.

Meat Week is essentially a perfect excuse to appreciate some of the finest barbeque this country has to offer. Honors are awarded at the end of the week for the best sauce, service, sides, atmosphere and best all-around. Elected captains are expected to tally the votes from attendees, but only those who have attended four or more of the restaurants are asked for their opinion.

Jenelle Dennis has accepted this responsibility, but she won’t be alone. Last year’s captain Mike Bober and David Gootzit are her First Mates. “We are all certified Kansas City Barbecue Society judges. The KCBS competition season starts in April and runs through November.  This is a great way to keep the love for all things BBQ in the off season,” she said. “We had great turnout last year and are anticipating an even greater one this year.”

Without further ado, I give you the schedule for Meat Week 2011.

Sunday 1/30- Urban Bar-B-Que Company/ Rockville, MD. / 6 p.m.

Monday 1/31- American Ice Company/ NW D.C./ 7 p.m.

All four Rocklands locations are offering “The Belly Buster”, which is a platter of two ribs, sausage, a quarter chicken and brisket for the special price of $9.99.  They normally sell it for $12.99.

Forget Snowmageddon, it’s DC Meat-Free Week!

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

In response to Meat Week, DC Vegan joined forces with Compassion Over Killing to plan the inaugural DC Meat-Free Week.  Unfortunately, Old Man Winter doesn’t seem to want you to eat your veggies.

Snowmageddon interfered with the last two days of Meat Week and the first few days of DC Meat-Free Week. There’s a good chance it will interfere with the rest of the week’s events as well.

DC Meat-Free Week is scheduled from Sunday, February 7 to Saturday, February 13.

-Tuesday, Feb 9:  Sticky Fingers Bakery in Washington, DC.  A portion of the proceeds benefits Compassion Over Killing.

-Wednesday, Feb 10: Busboys & Poets (all locations)

-Thursday, Feb 11: The Source in Washington, DC (5:30-10:30PM) (Reservations Recommended)

-Friday, Feb 12: Restaurant Nora in Washington, DC (Reservations Recommended)

A dinner with Farm Sanctuary President, Gene Baur will be rescheduled for February, 27 at Great Sage.

Winter (4)

There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan restaurants around Northern Virginia if any of those options are too far. Or, if you’re unable to make any of the events but you do venture out to visit the grocery store, there are plenty of tasty vegan recipes to try while you’re stuck at home.

If you do lose power, try these tips from the American Red Cross to keep yourself and your food safe.

Just be sure to keep warm. You can even memorialize Snowmageddon by helping a great cause. When you purchase a t-shirt from One vs. Many, founded by local guys Alex Welsh and Grant Hill, 15% of each t-shirt sale will benefit So Others Might Eat (SOME), a non-profit organization that works to help the homeless, poor, elderly, and individuals with mental illness by providing meals, housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling services.

Too bad there isn’t a DC Meat-Free Week shirt. Of course, you could settle for one of these shirts.

Carnivores Unite for Meat Week 2010

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Two days and counting until Meat Week 2010! The event lasts from January 31 to February 7 nationwide, with the event culminating on Super Bowl Sunday. What a perfect way to end the week: barbeque and pigskin. Eight days of pure heaven for meat lovers.

In 2005 “The Holiday That Time Forgot” was founded by Chris Cantey and Erni Walker in Tallahassee, Florida.  Although the term meat refers to any and all animal flesh, they decided to focus meat week on barbeque, Southern style barbeque that is.  Awards are handed out for Best of’s (Sauce, Service, Sides, Atmosphere, and All-Around) and Meat Week Honors.  Meatography is key to documenting the event.

The DC region can thank Captain Mike Bober of Capital Spice, for putting together a mouthwatering list of venues for DC’s first ever Meat Week.

DC’s Meat Week 2010 Schedule:

-Sunday, Jan 31: Urban BBQ in Rockville, MD

-Monday, Feb 1: Rocklands Barbeque in Washington, DC

-Tuesday, Feb 2: Red Hot & Blue in Arlington, VA

-Wednesday, Feb 3: Pork Barrel BBQ at Mango Mike’s in Alexandria, VA from 5-9pm ($15.95)

-Thursday, Feb 4: Capital Q in Washington, DC

-Friday, Feb 5: Branded ’72 in Rockville, MD

-Saturday, Feb 6: Mr. P’s Ribs and Fish in Washington, DC (514 Rhode Island Ave, NE in the Safeway parking lot) at 3pm

-Sunday, Feb 7: venue of your choice at 6pm

The idea was to keep the event within the Beltway and Metro accessible, so only two venues are in Virginia.

Lucky for us, one of the Virginia venues (Mango Mike’s) will feature a preview of what’s to come at Pork Barrel BBQ (yes, the makers of the sauce and dry rub), which opens this spring in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, VA. It’s an appropriate debut as the guys at Pork Barrel are partnering with Mike Anderson and Bill Blackburn of Mango Mike’s to develop the new restaurant.

Urban BBQ is on the list, which is the location of last years first attempt by Tim Carman in drawing fans to the holiday.

Rockland’s Virginia locations, though not the primary site for the holiday, will be happy to take any carnivores eager to bite into some barbeque.

On the last day participants are free to eat barbeque at a game watching party of their choice.  All gatherings are open to the public and take place at 7pm, unless otherwise noted. You don’t have to attend all 8 days.

To secure a spot at Pork Barrel’s tasting, email capitalspice@gmail.com by Monday evening.

Excuse me while I go wipe the drool off my face.
