Rent The Runway Grows and Grows
Posted by Natalie Kaar / Monday, April 25th, 2011
Hello there, shoppers! Here’s hoping you all had a wonderful holiday weekend! Even Monday isn’t bad when the meteorologists are calling for 80-degree weather, now is it? Speaking of things that aren’t too shabby, if you haven’t ever looked into Rent the Runway or explored it lately, you may be surprised to hear about all that you’ve been missing.
I had the pleasure of speaking with AJ Nicholas, director of public relations for the website, on Friday. She says the site, which allows fashionistas to rent designer dresses at a fraction of the cost of what it would take to buy them, now has over a million members and features 12,000 dresses from 120 designers. Plus, in January RTR added wedding apparel, featuring exclusive dresses and gowns from Robert Rodriguez, Calypso, Shoshanna, Nicole Miller and Badgley Mischka.
Imagine, ladies, a bridesmaid dress you adore, say from Nicole Miller, and instead of paying over $400, paying just $100! Or imagine showing up to your high school reunion in Hervé Léger (and paying just $150 instead of over $1,200).
Sizes 0-12 are available and a free “back-up size” is always offered along with the rental. Also, returning the rentals is cake. You just pack them up in a prepaid envelope, and RTR takes care of dry cleaning, etc. And, $5 insurance ensures you won’t be in for a pricey bill should you happen to spill some wine or split a seam as you dance the night away in your enviable ensemble.
If you haven’t signed up for membership yet, why the wait? Doing so is free. And wedding season is starting already! Not to mention, Gold Cup is less than two weeks away. And you know you want to dress up for a Royal Wedding party this weekend.

Flea For Alls With Red Barn Mercantile
Posted by Natalie Kaar / Friday, April 22nd, 2011
Hello there, shoppers! As you head into what I hope will be a wonderful holiday weekend, I wanted to give you a heads-up about a fantastic new shop-ortunity offered by Alexandria’s fabulous Red Barn Mercantile. They’re letting shoppers like us go along with them to flea markets as they shop for their store’s antiques. The Flea for All tours will include transportation, admission to the events, a morning snack and champagne for the trip home. Sounds like a blast!
“I’m often asked where I find all the great antiques and accessories in Red Barn Mercantile,” says store owner Amy Rutherford. “Quite simply, we scour local and far-flung flea markets and sales. For me, it’s one of the best parts of the job. I get to hunt for great deals, meet fun people and spend the day outdoors.”
Want to get in on the action? The first Flea For All will be to Luckett’s Spring Antique Market on May 21, with the tour bus to depart at 9 a.m. from Red Barn Mercantile, 113 S. Columbus St., Alexandria. The price to attend is $75. To get the nitty-gritty and register, visit the store’s website.

Hello there, shoppers! With the weather chilly in the mornings then anywhere from fair to steamy in the afternoons, layering is key in the spring. And when it comes to layering, our favorite piece by far is the ever-chic trench coat. While some details change from year to year with this wardrobe staple, chances are no matter which exact style you choose, it will look fabulous for many years to come.
Just a few of our favorites on the racks now, representing a wide range of prices:

Hello there, shoppers! Tuesdays get a bad rap for being boring. But boring is certainly not what next Tuesday, April 26, will be for area fashionistas. Derek Lam will be making a personal appearance at a special champagne reception at Saks Fifth Avenue Chevy Chase from 3-4 p.m!
Yet don’t fret if you have to miss the reception due to work or other commitments; you can still get a Derek Lam fix next week. The Chevy Chase Saks will be showcasing his Fall/Winter 2011 Collection in a trunk show Wednesday, April 27, through Thursday, April 28 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Not exactly a meet and greet but still very exciting. Beltway traffic and all.
I think I foresee some long lunches.
Happy shopping!

Francesca’s Collections Opens in Arlington & Reston
Posted by Natalie Kaar / Monday, April 18th, 2011
Hello there, shoppers! Here’s hoping you all had a fantastic weekend! I sure did. My parents were in town for birthday shopping on Saturday, and yesterday while walking around Reston Town Center, scoping out more Ferraris than you could count in Monte Carlo (the Mid-Atlantic chapter of the Ferrari Club of America was dining at Clyde’s), I discovered that the store I had fallen in love with in South Carolina had set up shop at RTC: Francesca’s Collections. You’ll find it right by the theater and Origins. It opened on Friday. Also, this morning I learned that Pentagon City is now home to a Francesca’s Collections store, too! (I like to think begging for NoVA representation in the SC guest book made a difference.)
While the Reston store is very small, a little elbow-bumping is beyond worth it if you ask me. I’m always looking for Boho-fab and other fun, flirty right-now tops that don’t break the bank but also won’t fall apart with just a few washes, and the store has many for just about $30-$35–some very cute dresses, too. What first got me hooked on the store, though, is the fashion jewelry, particularly the earrings collection of good old Fran; some of my absolute favorite pairs are ones I purchased about two years ago in the Myrtle Beach shop. The store also has bags, shoes and girlie gifts like stationery and candles.
Happy shopping!
