Events to Cool You Down

La Cuisine, located in Old Town is a community favorite.

Good afternoon, shoppers!  It isn’t much of a surprise that today is another scorcher outside, and the weekend outlook calls for more of the same.  Beat the heat and humidity by checking out some of these cool (air-conditioned) events in Old Town.

For starters, La Cuisine is hosting a Summer Shopping Spree Event now through August 31, featuring 20-percent store-wide savings! You can also grab up the one-time only savings online; just use the code “summer 2010.”  But the fun at La Cuisine doesn’t stop with discounts.

This Saturday, July 10, the store is inviting you and your taste buds to a free tasting of their new selection of condiments.  Help out your hamburger and indulge in tastings including their new Fallot Dijon Mustards and a mayonnaise from Delouis, both of France — plus organic ketchup. The tasting will be held from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

And, on Sunday, bring the kiddos to La Cuisine for a kids cooking class for ages 7 to 11.  Alicia Cherry, a graduate from the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts will teach your kids hands-on basic cooking skills and kitchen safety while the class prepares a Mediterranean dish.  The menu will feature savory and spicy Greek chicken with pita bread, cucumber yogurt sauce, hummus and veggie sticks, baklava cups and summer lemonade with mint. The class will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and costs $30 plus a $25 materials fee. The class size is limited, so visit La Cuisine now to sign up your chef-in-training!

What’s more, there is no need to be jealous of your kids’ kitchen tutorial this weekend because La Cuisine is hosting another event on Sunday that should be right up your alley. Joe Raffa, the Executive Chef at Oyamel in the District, will be teaching a knife skills class where you can learn basic knife skills and knife care while using La Cuisine’s selection of first-rate knives! The class begins at 1:30 p.m., and you can reserve a spot online at the store’s website.

While you’re in the neighborhood this weekend, stroll on over to Treat to celebrate its third birthday!  This Saturday, Treat celebrates its third year with all sorts of gifts and giveaways including a drawing for one of three Treat gift cards valued at $100 each.  Champagne and macaroons will be served starting at 5 p.m. It’s quite rare that guests receive presents at someone else’s birthday so don’t miss out on this celebration!

Enjoy these events and stay cool!

José Andrés Unveils Hora Feliz

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Lean times call for bold initiatives (learned that from this dude named Barack-something-or-other), and restaurateur José Andrés is ready to rip this recession a new one with his $4 “Jaleo hour” deals.

From 4:30 p.m. – 7 p.m., Sunday through Friday, all three Jaleos–including our award-winning Crystal City branch–will serve up assorted tapas (including signature offerings like patatas bravas and gambas al ajillo), homemade sangrias (stand down, VA ABC!), standard rail drinks and select draft beers. By-the-glass Spanish wines will also be available at half-price.

Reciprocal specials are expected at Zaytinya and Oyamel, as well.

Meanwhile, there’s other changes afoot at Jaleo … (stay tuned)
