Fashionable Crowd Flocks To South Moon Under’s Lookbook Party

To celebrate the release of their funky, beach-set spring lookbook, South Moon Under, along with SpicyCandyDC and special guest Nylon editor-at-large Dani Stahl, threw a swinging  party last night at their Clarendon location. The up-and-coming DC area fashionable blogger duo, Carlis Sanchez and Katya Ananieva, killed it by styling individual looks for 14-pages of this season’s biggest trends. Major “Get in my wardrobe now!” reactions upon viewing.

Swarms of chicly dressed guests sipped on Honest Tea, munched on Georgetown Cupcakes and took advantage of the storewide 20 percent off discount (score!). From crochet scalloped shorts and pretty baubles to pastel denim and punchy handbags, the store was abuzz with a flurry of shopping.

So many choices. / Photo credit: Lorin Drinkard

The ever-so-cool Dani Stahl, who writes Nylon‘s beloved ‘Factory Girl’ column each month, chatted with customers and bloggers throughout the night, even petting one guest’s dog. According to her knowledge, Nylon is apparently the only magazine her petite pouch won’t drool on.

Local area fashion bloggers Lacey of A Lacey Perspective, The President Wear Prada, Alison of Chain Strap Purse, LBVie Ashley, Cheralee of Lyle Style and Waverly of Pich & Roor, among others, showed their support for SpicyCandyDC by turning out, in stylish ensembles, no less.

Get into the holiday spirit (that’s the only pun I’ll make, I promise)!

The holiday season isn’t just about buying expensive gifts or having the most lavish display of Christmas lights; it’s also about love, family and giving back to your fellow man in the spirit of peace and goodwill everywhere.

And drinking, of course.

This merriest of seasons gives a great excuse for creating fun and indulgent grown-up treats that will put the Ho Ho Ho! back in your Holidays.

Christmas Countdown: Holiday Party Etiquette

Posted by Rebekah Lowe / Friday, December 16th, 2011

Friday, Dec. 16, 2011

Well, people, only nine more days until the day we’ve all been waiting for! Between now and then, I’m sure you have quite a few holiday festivities in your game plan. You’ve probably racked up one work party–maybe two if you get the honor of being someone’s ‘plus one’–two or three get-to-togethers with your church, neighbors, old family friends, etc., and probably at least one shindig per each side of the family.

I don’t know about you, but all these social outings are enough to get me stressin’. What gift do I bring? Do I even bring a gift? What if I run out of things to talk about? What if I get stuck next to someone awkward at the dinner table? Well no fear, my dears. I have answers!

Don't be like this guy... (Photo: Shutterstock.com/Jaimie Duplass)

Holiday Party Etiquette

Office Party Manners
• Being 30 minutes late is acceptable, but the max is 45 minutes.
• Keep an eye on how much business talk you are doing and on how much you are noshing throughout the night. Also, keep your drink limit set firmly at two.
• Don’t use an office party to curry favor from your boss, but you must thank him before you leave.

House Party Manners
• Be no more than 15 minutes late.
• Be an active participant; when the host says the food is ready, put aside your fear of looking greedy and head to the table immediately.
• Never switch place cards. Sit where the host has asked you to sit.
• Stay out of the kitchen unless you are invited in, but do offer to help with a specific task: “Can I load the dishwasher for you?”
• You may be tempted to snoop in medicine cabinets and back rooms—resist the urge. It’s not allowed!
• Don’t linger no matter how much more you think the host likes you than the other guests. When the masses start to head out, follow their lead.

RSVPs
• RSVP immediately even if no RSVP was requested (unless the invitation reads “Regrets Only”).
• If you have severe food allergies, let host know when you RSVP so he or she can plan the menu accordingly.
• If you are vegetarian or have another specific food need, alert the host when you RSVP and offer to bring a dish you can eat.

Toasts
• Formal parties: The host will make a ‘Health & Happiness’ toast!
• Casual parties: A guest can stand and make toast. Include a thank you to the host. Tell a short, relevant story or joke, but keep it clean! Remember that sincerity is more important than eloquence.

Small Talk
• Brush up on your current events before the party. Take some time to form your opinions beforehand so you don’t fall back on agreeing with everyone else. Check Twitter on your way to the party to get any last minute updates on the world!
• Think back to the last time you saw the other guests. Where did you leave off with them? Prepare some questions for them and be ready to give them a life update, but limit any complaining or gossiping.
• Don’t hide behind your cell phone. Turn it off and make yourself look available for conversation. When you are talking with someone, don’t let your eyes wander around the room. Give them your full attention.

Great gift idea! (Photo: Shutterstock.com/Hintau Aliaksei)

Thank You’s & Gifts
• Thank your host twice—once when you leave (you must seek them out on your way out the door) and again via a phone call. A written thank you note is only necessary after a formal dinner or an overnight stay.
• While gifts are not expected for formal dinners, do bring a small gift to a casual dinner party. Houseplants and flowers are always a good choice, but make sure you present the flowers in a simple vase. If you bring wine, don’t expect the host to serve it at the party, and never bring food unless you have been asked.
• Perhaps your host is a golfer. You could bring him some personalized golf balls. Other options are a Best Seller book, an herb & spice set, some Virginia peanut brittle or an unusual kitchen item such as a pasta lifter. A more personalized gift option is a picture frame. You can mail a photo you took at the party to the host later.
• Gifts may be presented either wrapped or unwrapped, but if you are set on making the best impression possible, go ahead and wrap it!

For last-minute gift ideas, check out the S.W.A.G. Holiday Gift Guide! And if your holiday game plan isn’t packed already, take a look at a few of the holiday parties going on in NoVA! Check back here on Monday for the next Christmas Countdown post to find out the best places to look at lights this season!

Oscars Party

Posted by ryan / Friday, February 25th, 2011

(image: Oscars)

The entertainment industry will continue to pat itself on the back this Sunday evening, but awards season has all been leading up to this. The 83rd edition of the Academy Awards will reward the pinnacle of acting and film making throughout its four hour telecast. In other words, they’re going to honor the movies that were anything but mainstream for the most part. It’s up to the hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway to make it somewhat entertaining, but their efforts will probably all be in vain at the half-way point. That’s when you’ll start wishing you’d ventured out of the house to watch it amongst friends.

You, yes you are cordially invited to the DC Film Society’s 19th Annual Oscars Viewing Party at the Arlington Drafthouse on Feb. 27. The broadcast will be projected on the big screen, while servers try to make your visit as pleasant and convenient as possible. Their menu features an extensive list of gourmet food and alcoholic beverages. Silent auctions, contests, and door prizes provide an added incentive. Signed movie posters, scripts, and DVD’s are up for grabs. Local film critics Joe Barber and Bill Henry are the hosts, offering their own unique insights and quirky commentary.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. The Pre-show is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and the actual ceremony gets underway at 8 p.m. Tickets nearly sold out last year, so it would be prudent to reserve them before you go. There will be a limited amount available at the door. The cost of admission is $20 for non-members. Call 703-486-2345 for more information.

The following are the nominees for Best Picture.

1. 127 Hours

2. Black Swan

3. The Fighter

4. Inception

5.The Kid’s Are All Right

6. The King’s Speech

7.The Social Network

8.Toy Story 3

9.True Grit

10.Winter’s Bone

How many have you seen? Which one would you like to see win? Personally, my vote goes to Inception. Great movie, deserving of accolades!

Artful celebration of community’s founding

By Janet Rems

Reston is throwing itself a party, and everyone is invited. The foremost Planned Community in the United States on April 18 is celebrating its 45th anniversary and the 95th birthday of its founder, Robert E. Simon.

Many of the Founder’s Day events, sponsored primarily by the Reston Historic Trust, will revolve around the arts, an essential component of life in Reston since its beginning. Simon, in fact, purchased the 6,750 acres of land that became Reston by selling Carnegie Hall, a family property.

A free celebration with Reston Community Center-organized live music, dance and theater performances, will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at Lake Anne Village Center, “the heart” of Reston.

A high point will be the unveiling of the Initiative for Public Art Reston’s (IPAR) first project. IPAR member and longtime Northern Virginia activist Chuck Veatch says, “It will be a serious work of art” in the $100,000 range. He expects to have a model to display.

Gathering Place

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

By Katie Wilmeth and Forrest Glenn Spencer

In the hills, along the rivers, in the hotels and the Dales, there is a special space made just for the occasion.

People have a need to meet. We like catered affairs and festive decors; we like others to pamper our needs and service our gatherings. In Northern Virginia, the travel and hospitality industries generate nearly $3 billion in tax receipts, and employ more than 80,000 workers. Venues for these social and business gatherings have become an integral part of our economy and a part of our way of life. We spotlight some of the region’s unique venues to party or do business, while including a guide to an array of other venues that cater to every need.

STABLER-LEADBEATER APOTHECARY MUSEUM

Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum

Alexandria

Lorien Hotel & Spa
This is the latest entrant from the Kimpton chain of boutique hotels and offers spa services (one of the only Kimpton’s to do so) and dedicated meeting space. Three thousand square feet is available and easily dividable into any formation for social events or business meetings, accommodating 35 guests or a few hundred. Chef Robert Wiedmaier and his restaurant have created a cuisine menu that complements every element of this elegant experience. 703-894-3434

Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum
Once the oldest operating pharmacy in the United States, Stabler-Leadbeater is now a private museum with the original apothecary still intact. Available for parties up to 50. On-site staff can give guided tours and enhance the evening with themed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. A preferred vendors list is available that supports Alexandria musicians, caterers and rental necessities. 703-838-3852

Carafe Microwinery

Carafe Microwinery

Carafe Microwinery
Opened last year, this Old Town shop rents out space for private winemaking events. With the help of a wine expert, visitors get to mix their very own wine, bottle, cork it and take it home. With a minimum two-and-a-half case order, guests will be impressed by a private label commemorating the event, whether it’s a wedding, shower, birthday celebration or business meeting. 703-975-5759

Gadsby’s Tavern
Washington ate here, John Adams argued with people, and Andy Jackson stopped by for a drink. Gadsby’s has been an integral part of this region’s political and social life since the late 18th century. Today, visitors can bask in the rich history with a delicious meal and a drink from the barrel or the wine cellar, just as our colonial founders did when the nation was young. The building houses the Alexandria Ballroom (with original woodwork) for intimate affairs or corporate dinners. 703-548-1288

Rehearsal dinners, business meetings or theme parties make Raspberry Plain a remarkable setting. The mansion house can be divided into three separate rooms, or combined for a total of 80 seated.
