Secrets to the Perfect Blowout

Posted by Carten Cordell / Monday, August 12th, 2013

Everyone loves dolling up their hair in fancy styles, but a simple sleek blowout can be just as chic without all the extra pins and curls. You can spend all you want at a salon to achieve this look, but what if you could get the same results at home? Thanks to Kara Manos, owner of the beauty blog Politics of Pretty, you can do so with her simple step-by-step guide.

Step One (Photo courtesy of Kara Manos)

Step 1: Post shower, comb hair with a large-tooth comb to detangle and apply a dime-size amount (or less) of hair product to help protect your tresses from the heat of the blow dryer. Personally, I love Pantene Pro-V Ultimate 10 BB Crème, a 10-in-1 hair perfector and styling product that repairs, smoothes, protects, and manages frizz among other properties.

Step Two (Photo courtesy of Kara Manos)

Step Two: Begin blow drying hair with your fingers to help suck out any moisture. Dry until hair is about 80 percent dry and slightly damp. This step will keep you from taking longer to blow dry hair and make it easier for styling.

Step Three (Photo courtesy of Kara Manos)

Step Three: Section off hair starting from the bottom layers and working your way up. This will help you focus on each layer of hair and blow dry evenly. Start at the roots and follow through to ends with a round or paddle brush. Repeat.

Step Four (Photo courtesy of Kara Manos)

Step Four: If you have bangs, brush them side to side using a paddle brush to help them take the shape of your forehead. This will prevent any awkward bends.

Step Five: Spritz roots with a dry shampoo spray to help prolong your blowout. Serge Normant Meta Revive Volumizing Dry Shampoo is my go-to for its sweet scent and volumizing ingredients.

And, voila! A salon blowout at home.

Shop Tours: Maggie Jane’s

Posted by Carten Cordell / Friday, August 9th, 2013

Before even stepping into Old Town’s newest boutique, it is obvious that the store has style and character that overflows its small cozy space. For years, Old Town has taken pride in salvaging history, and as the newest vintage store on the block, Maggie Jane’s beautifies it as well.

From its beautifully handmade sign hanging by the door to the elegant typewriters inside among other old-fashioned treasures, it is a dream that has come to life for store owner Coddy Eyre. As a girl, Eyre fell in love with all things vintage, and with help from her loving children and friends, she opened the store hoping to draw others to things that become more precious as they age.

Aside from its devotion to vintage items, Maggie Jane’s also sells other pieces that can bring instant charm to the home in any kind of style, ranging from urban chic to farmhouse rustic. The store also has exclusive collections from an assortment of designers, including CeCe Caldwell Chalk and Clay Paint which allows customers to refurbish their own furniture at home. “We will be offering classes and tutorials on using these products to transform pieces they would otherwise throw out,” says Eyre.

The boutique also sells items that make excellent gifts for people of any age, from handmade scarves and jewelry to soothing lotions.  Whatever your needs may be, Maggie Jane’s provides them in an antique and delightful atmosphere that will have some people reminisce about the past and others inspired by their findings to bring it back to life.

If there are two things that never goes out of style, they are simplicity and sentiment. Truth be told, if there is something in your wardrobe that you love, whether it is an extremely faded pair of jeans or a ring that has been passed down for generations, your personal attachment to that piece makes it a much easier go-to than ones you buy just to follow the present trends. For Caroline Whittington, Richmond-local and owner of giantLION jewelry, the true gems in her closet are ones that she can wear over and over again despite the typical fashion fads. Here is a Q&A on this down-to-earth designer and her simple yet distinct approach to style and her jewelry collection.
