Cosmetic Crushes: Leah McKay Talks Natural Beauty

Posted by Carten Cordell / Thursday, July 11th, 2013

Leah McKay, makeup artist extraordinaire for weddings and television, has been in the business since 1986. With regulars from CNN, FOX, NBC and PBS, not to mention a few presidents and vice presidents, you’re sure to come away with a polished look ready for a camera snap in the blink of an eye.

What sets McKay apart is that her focus is on bringing out and accentuating her clients’ natural beauty, rather than  layering and creating a dramatic look (though, she knows how to do that as well). McKay’s style has been highlighted in Washington Wedding Guide every year since 2003–so she must be doing something right.

Below you will find her top five tips to achieve a natural look–just in time for the dog days of summer!

1. Use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip the skin of natural oils, yet is still effective in removing makeup, dirt, pollutants, etc.  Then, amoisturizer can work more effectively.  Beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin!

2. The under eye area is the deepest and most shadowy part of our face.  An under eye concealer is an immediate brightener.

3. A tinted moisturizer or foundation applied just where needed (some days more than others…) should just even out the skin and create a smooth finish.

4. Two-in-one products are great; for instance a cheek and lip stain for a fast pop of color, and the aforementioned tinted moisturizer.

5. Curl the lashes and add mascara to really open the eyes.

“In my opinion,” McKay explained, “the best tip for a beautiful, natural look is sleep!  Our skin is a true indicator of how much rest we’ve had, and what goes into our bodies.”

Closet Crushes: Lucy Hale

Posted by Carten Cordell / Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

Best known for her role as Aria Montgomery in ABC Family series Pretty Little Liars, actress Lucy Hale has risen as a starlet and even graced the covers of Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, and Teen Vogue. In the hit TV show, Aria Montgomery has an edgy, chic wardrobe that has inspired many fans to recreate her ensembles. Acting aside, Hale has launched a country music career and signed on with Hollywood Records to record a new album.

At this year’s MuchMusic Video Awards, Hale rocks an AMEN white number with metallic accents, a Charlotte Olympia Plexiglas clutch, and fuchsia pumps. The sweet outfit has hints of bold femininity and rocker-polish written all over it.

Shopping Simplified: Fortique

It is often hard to find a party planner or an interior designer that isn’t asking for a massive paycheck in return for their services. Stephanie Olvey discovered this conflict while trying to plan a birthday bash for her sister and concluded that there had to be a way she could throw the party of her dreams and stay within her price range. As a result, she founded Fortique, an Etsy-like haven for the creative minds of the metropolitan area. This D.C.-based website provides local stylists, makeup artists, event planners, interior designers, and other artistic minds with the opportunity to offer their business to locals in the DMV area. Before a designer or event planner launches their business on the site, Stephanie goes through the details with the provider and makes sure that each member of her site is determined to assist customers with any needs they might have when requesting their help. So whether you are looking for a makeup artist for your wedding or a photographer to assist you with family photos, it is guaranteed that when using Fortique you will find the specialist that will exceed all of your expectations.

Finding the one perfect foundation can prove to be difficult when we set lofty expectations. Does it provide enough coverage without looking cakey? Will it leave my skin irritated or balance out my dark spots and redness? Can the makeup last throughout the day and absorb oil? When it comes to fulfilling these wishes, bareMinerals ‘READY’ formula is quite the overachiever.

Walking on Cloud Nine: Lucite Heels for Summer

Posted by Carten Cordell / Friday, July 5th, 2013

It all started with a fairy tale of Cinderella’s lost slipper.  Centuries later, the story of the iconic glass shoes remains in our children’s storybooks, but wearing glass on our feet is still impractical. Luckily, the fashion world has delivered us a clear Lucite in heels, a shatterproof alternative to glass. The trend has made a statement during London Fashion Week’s street style and singer Beyoncé has also the rocked the look. Check out the selection of Lucite heels below for a modern-take on Cinderella’s beloved glass slippers.
