Sure Things: Benefit Fake Up

Posted by Carten Cordell / Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

Benefit 'Fake Up' Concealer, $24 (Photo Courtesy of PRShots.Com)

I first fell in love with Benefit’s Fake Up Concealer during my stint at Seventeen this past winter. It was one of my fabulous finds at one of the many Hearst beauty sales. Immediately, I wanted to blab about it to my friends and family but I couldn’t find a link for it anywhere. Bummed and thinking that it was a product that was no longer available, I had to keep my big beauty-sharing mouth shut.

Then, on one of my ritual outings to Ulta, there it was, in all its glory–Fake Up. Turns out I had gotten the chance to try it before it hit shelves, and let me tell you right here and now–this is one product your makeup collection simply can’t live without.

So what’s all the hype? Fake Up is a hydrating crease-control concealer – with Vitamin E & apple seed extract which hides dark circles & diffuses fine lines for a silky smooth, ultra-natural look. Available in a sleek lipstick-like silver tube in three shades, this is the perfect concealer for everyday use.

Trust me on this one and head over to your nearest Ulta or Sephora, or click here to buy it online!

K.I.S.S. – Keep It Short and Sweet with the Faux Bob

Posted by Carten Cordell / Monday, July 15th, 2013

Let’s face it: with the heat and humidity that takes over during the summer, the last thing you want to do is to let your hair down. So this summer, many try to K.I.S.S: keep it short and sweet. With this in mind, don’t just tie it up in a high bun like everyone else. Instead, go for the chic bob. Not only will it air out your neck in the rising temperatures, it is also a great way to provide volume and texture to your look. While you may not want to chop off your precious locks, this fun style can be faked in a few simple steps:

1. While hair is damp, apply Alterna Bamboo volumizing spray to the root of the hair. Blow dry smooth with a round brush.

2. Once hair is dry, curl 1-inch sections of hair, starting from the back with a 1 or 1 1/2-inch curling iron (depending on your hair’s length).

3. Work your way to the front of your hair, creating as many curls as you possibly can.

4. Once the hair is curled, apply a nickel-sized amount of Sachajuan shine serum to your hands and run your fingers through your hair to break up curls.

5. Tie hair at the very end of your hair with an elastic. Roll the hair under the elastic and tuck toward the nape of the neck. Spread the hair evenly in a horizontal direction, creating the illusion of a bob. Leave sides of hair to make look more natural.

6. Secure with bobby pins as needed and apply TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Firm Hold Spray.

Go for the Faux!

Cosmetic Crushes: Leah McKay Talks Natural Beauty

Posted by Carten Cordell / Thursday, July 11th, 2013

Leah McKay, makeup artist extraordinaire for weddings and television, has been in the business since 1986. With regulars from CNN, FOX, NBC and PBS, not to mention a few presidents and vice presidents, you’re sure to come away with a polished look ready for a camera snap in the blink of an eye.

What sets McKay apart is that her focus is on bringing out and accentuating her clients’ natural beauty, rather than  layering and creating a dramatic look (though, she knows how to do that as well). McKay’s style has been highlighted in Washington Wedding Guide every year since 2003–so she must be doing something right.

Below you will find her top five tips to achieve a natural look–just in time for the dog days of summer!

1. Use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip the skin of natural oils, yet is still effective in removing makeup, dirt, pollutants, etc.  Then, amoisturizer can work more effectively.  Beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin!

2. The under eye area is the deepest and most shadowy part of our face.  An under eye concealer is an immediate brightener.

3. A tinted moisturizer or foundation applied just where needed (some days more than others…) should just even out the skin and create a smooth finish.

4. Two-in-one products are great; for instance a cheek and lip stain for a fast pop of color, and the aforementioned tinted moisturizer.

5. Curl the lashes and add mascara to really open the eyes.

“In my opinion,” McKay explained, “the best tip for a beautiful, natural look is sleep!  Our skin is a true indicator of how much rest we’ve had, and what goes into our bodies.”

Happy Accentuating!

Shopping Simplified: Fortique

Posted by Carten Cordell / Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

It is often hard to find a party planner or an interior designer that isn’t asking for a massive paycheck in return for their services. Stephanie Olvey discovered this conflict while trying to plan a birthday bash for her sister and concluded that there had to be a way she could throw the party of her dreams and stay within her price range. As a result, she founded Fortique, an Etsy-like haven for the creative minds of the metropolitan area. This D.C.-based website provides local stylists, makeup artists, event planners, interior designers, and other artistic minds with the opportunity to offer their business to locals in the DMV area. Before a designer or event planner launches their business on the site, Stephanie goes through the details with the provider and makes sure that each member of her site is determined to assist customers with any needs they might have when requesting their help. So whether you are looking for a makeup artist for your wedding or a photographer to assist you with family photos, it is guaranteed that when using Fortique you will find the specialist that will exceed all of your expectations.
