Holiday Gift Guide: Fab Ideas for the Fashionista

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Hello there, shoppers! If you’re excited to go holiday shopping but armed with less than ample ideas, you’re not alone. If only everyone would be forthcoming with their wish lists, right? Santa has it so easy with everyone being so specific — minus all that travel and the length of his list, I suppose.

At any rate, fret no more. Help is here. Inspiration shall abound. Your friends at SWAG have done all the homework so you don’t have to. Each weekday today through Dec. 13, score ideas for absolutely everyone on your list!

Today:

Fabulous Ideas for the Fashionista

Oh, the fashionista! No two fashionistas are exactly alike, and shopping for any one of them can be ultra intimidating. I like to consider it a challenge.

The first step to a successful gift — a home run — is something you’ve probably heard before: Pay attention throughout the year. What does she tend to wear? Are there certain designers she’s always discussing. When a sale hits at _________ does she stop everything and scurry on over for the savings. Would she rather skip breakfast than leave the house without big bangles or killer boots?

I also encourage snooping in her closet, should you have the access. If all that doesn’t help, here are some gifts I’d argue just about any girl serious about style would savor:

What: Yves Saint Laurent Nail Trio

 or

Deborah Lippman Fashionista Lacquer Gift Set Trio

Why:  If your sartorially obsessed sweetie/best friend/sister/daughter doesn’t overlook her fingers when it  comes to fashion, she should adore either of these sets. Of course, if she tends to plays things slightly more on the safe side with her mani, I’d make it option #2.

Where to Get It: Neiman Marcus at Tysons Galleria

What It’ll Cost You: $45 and $40, respectively

What: Tulle Faux Fur Snood

Why:  Cold weather can be a bummer. That is unless you have some warm accessories that make dressing for the elements downright delightful. This snood delivers just that.

Where to Get It: Old Town’s Treat

What It’ll Cost You: $16

 What: Panacea Colorblock Dangle Earrings

Why: If trendy is your fashionista’s mantra, rest assured, these cheerful dangles hit several trends on a high note.

Where to Get Them: Cusp in Tysons

What It’ll Cost You: $58

What: Marc by Marc Jacobs Preppy Nylon Sasha Crossbody

Why: According to this fashionista, Marc Jacobs always manages to hit the mark. And for a fashionista on the go, nothing beats a crossbody bag. This one does overtime by managing to look super cool for any casual outing in fuss-free nylon.Comes in black, faded aluminum (shown), fuchsia and red.

Where to Get It: Bloomingdale’s

What It’ll Cost You: $198

Happy shopping!

PS. A new style of jeans from her favorite denim source is always a winner as well. (Santa always manages to make this gal smile with some J Brand or Hudson skinnies.) Look for deals at South Moon UnderAnthropologie and revolveclothing.com as well as on sample sale sites like Gilt and Haute Look.

Shop Talk: Treat

Jennifer Donohue (Photo by Jonny Meyer)

If you’ve ever been sample sale shopping, you know exactly how crazy it can be; from the lines to the battles with competing customers, it can be completely overwhelming. So, when Jennifer Donohue, who says she’s always been a discount shopper, decided to open Treat four years ago, she wanted to create something that would bring sample sale shopping into a calmer, boutique setting. And that’s exactly what she did.

Donohue opened Treat with the intention of giving women in the area an opportunity to find unique, stylish clothing at affordable prices. Now, the shop has expanded from simply selling overstock to working with affordable, independent designers. All of Treat’s jewelry is made by local designers, and the clothes, shoes and handbags (most under $100!) come from showrooms and boutiques around the country.

With plenty of open spaces, tastefully arranged clothing and displays, lots of natural light and only a select number of each item, the store invites a calm, open shopping environment. And the merchandise, ranging from elegant and classy to fun and flirty, provides a distinctly unique shopping experience you’ll be sure to love.

Halloweeni Candy Corn Martini

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Monday, October 31st, 2011

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

I hope you are enjoying some candy today!

Image: val lawless/Shutterstock

Candy corn is one of those treasured or loathed Halloween essentials, love it or hate it. Personally, I love it. Anything made with loads of sugar is great in my book.

For my fellow candy corn lovers, I have a great adult Halloween treat for you.

Candy Corn Martini

It sounds a little gross, but you basically make a sweet vodka drink by infusing the vodka in candy corn. When the candy corn vodka is mixed with some orange liqueur, lemon juice, and an egg, it turns into a frothy, sweet and festive beverage.

Here’s the recipe (from Food Network):

Makes two drinks

-1/2 cup candy corn
-1 1/2 cups vodka
-2 ounces orange liqueur
-juice of 1/2 lemon
-1 egg white
-candy corn, to garnish

Allow at least three hours to infuse your vodka. Combine the candy corn and vodka in an airtight container and let sit for at least three hours. When the vodka is done, strain it, and add the remaining ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice, shake, and pour into martini glasses.

Enjoy your Halloween!

Freeze Jag: Pleasant Pops

Posted by Warren Rojas / Monday, August 22nd, 2011

August is historically the steamiest, stickiest, sweatiest month of the year–brilliant move, Founding Fathers, building the nation’s capital on a swamp–in these parts. We’ve tracked down 31 frozen treats (one a day for the rest of this month) to provide you with some temporary, and often insanely delicious, relief.

The place: Pleasant Pops truck – www.pleasantpops.com; @pleasantpops

The prescription: Chongos paleta. There I was, sitting on a public bench, minding my own own business when the realization that I was being watched swiftly crept over me. When I turned she was almost on top of me, her hawk-like gaze tracking the every move of my diligent digits as I gingerly unsheathed my gently perspiring afternoon delight. “Where did you get that?” the obviously spellbound young woman begged me–quickly followed by “And do they take credit cards?” That passionate interlude was made possible by Pleasant Pops, the upstart dessert vendors who’ve chosen Mexican-style paletas as their refreshment medium. Their fruity exploits are legendary, but I was captivated by the sultry chongos, a dreamy pop forged from Mexican crema (sweet as can be) mischievously dusted with bright, sexy cinnamon.

Need a break from frozen dairy? Pleasant Pops mixes up their catalog every week, but if they’ve still got’em, we recommend  cooling off with: summer peach (absolutely exhilarating), cantaloupe or blackberry-mint (equal parts ripened fruit and steadfast mint). –Warren

Style Sense: Meet Aimee Wedlake Lange

Posted by alexandra / Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Hello, Shoppers! You’re probably already familiar with Valerianne’s unique and elegant collection of bath products, home goods, bedroom decor and gift selections. What you may not be familiar with is the Vienna shop’s owner, Aimee Wedlake Lange. She runs a beautiful store, is a recent new mommy and on top of it all, she has great personal style!

Q: How would you define your personal style?
A: I think it’s mostly Bohemian and relaxed.

Q: What is your wardrobe staple?
A: Right before I got married, I treated myself to a Diane von Furstenberg tunic that I have worn to death – through every season and with everything from Frye boots, to heels, to flip flops. It has a great retro native pattern to it that I never tire of.

Q: Who are your favorite designers right now?
A: I wore a Rebecca Taylor dress recently and absolutely loved it, so she’s probably one of my faves for the moment.

Q: Who inspires your style?
A: I think just everyday style inspires me. I like to see how my customers and regular people on the street put things together.

Q: What is your favorite accessory?
A: I’m really into belts right now, probably because I was pregnant and couldn’t wear them for so long! I also love a great bangle or cuff.

Q: Any store faves for good deals?
A: Treat in Alexandria is always a great place to visit. The clothes are fun, and they usually have great prices. I also recently tried out Rent The Runway and thought it was really cool.

Q: What is your favorite jewelry to accessorize with?
A: I always love a great pair of earrings and funky cocktail rings. My favorite types of jewelry are more “found” pieces, as opposed to brand-driven.

Q: Where are some of your favorite places to shop baby clothes?
A: I do a lot online (Baby Gap, Old Navy, Zulily); I watch for sales and then have LOTS of fun! I really like Appleseed in Alexandria, and one of my go tos is Paddington Station in Vienna – I have found some great things there for great prices. I was just in Rehoboth and came across Sole Kids – such great stuff, such great people… I can’t wait to visit again.

Q: Any style tips for our readers?
A: I’ve learned over the years to wear something you’re comfortable in. Just make sure you wear the clothes and they don’t wear you! It should match who you are and how you feel.

How-to: Kakigori

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Happy first day of summer! What better way to celebrate the start of summer than with a sweet icy treat? I’ve already talked about Korean bing soo, so today I will share another icy treat, Japanese “kakigori.” Kakigori is basically shaved ice with sweet flavored syrup. I guess it is pretty similar to the snow cone, but the difference is in the texture. Snow cones use crushed ice while kakigori uses shaved ice. The bad news: I haven’t been able to find any restaurants in Northern Virginia that serve it. The good news: It is extremely simple to make and requires very few ingredients.

First you’ll need kakigori syrup (try looking in your local Hmart, Lotte, or you can buy it online here), an ice shaver (again, you can try looking in your local international market, or there are plenty on Amazon for under $30), and ice (not pictured).

Just shave the ice and generously pour the syrup on top.

Have fun with it, add fruits, different flavors of syrups, or even sweetened condensed milk on top.

Blueberries on top.

A lot of you might not be inclined to buy an ice shaver, but I think of it as an investment. Not only do I like these better than the snow cones from ice cream trucks (the ice is nearly impenetrable and the syrups always melt to the bottom), but think of all the endless customizable icy treats you can make for many summers to come.
