The Turkey Day & Black Friday Cheat Sheet

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Black Friday & Thanksgiving Day are both promising big bargains this year! (Shutterstock.com/Johnkworks)

Hello there, shoppers! If you’re bent on bagging some big-time bargains during the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, to commence in just a few days, here’s hoping you’re resting up now. Black Friday starts a day early this year at many stores — yup, Turkey Day, before many are even expected to come out of their food comas.

That includes Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets; while Midnight Madness is planned, as in years past, some stores will be opening as early as 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Other stores opening on Thursday include Walmart, which will be opening at 10 p.m.

While it would be virtually impossible to send you all of details on the deluge of deals, here are the high points, including a few pointers on staying ahead of the pack:

The city streets, anti-mall experience:

Head to Old Town Alexandria. Many stores in the Old Town Boutique District are offering 30-percent savings from 6-8 a.m., 20-percent savings from 8-10 a.m. and 10-percent savings the rest of the day. And every OTBD shop has something very special in store. Some discounts are even bigger; for instance, Treat is offering 40-percent savings from 8-10 a.m. Plus, the city is offering free parking on Black Friday at all city-owned garages and lots, with many opening at 6 a.m. Stick around until 7 p.m. for the tree lighting and other fun holiday festivities.

FREE PARKING HOURS: Market Square Garage, 108 N. Fairfax St., open 6 a.m. on Friday until 6 a.m. on Saturday; Courthouse Square Garage, 111 S. Pitt St., open 6 a.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday; Thompson’s Alley Garage, 10 Thompson’s Alley, open 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Friday; N. Union St. Garage, 220 N. Union St., open 6 a.m. on Friday until 2:30 a.m. on Saturday; S. Henry St. Lot, 112 S. Henry St., from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday; Cameron/ Saint Asaph St. Lot, 210 N. Saint Asaph St., from 6 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

The mega-mall experience:

Here are your Black Friday sale hours (click on the mall links for the deals):

Fair Oaks Mall: 6 a.m.-10 p.m.

Fashion Center at Pentagon City:  5 a.m.- 10 p.m.

Dulles Town Center: Some stores will open as early as 5 a.m. (the rest at 6 a.m.) and as late as 11 p.m. (the rest at 10 p.m.)

Tysons Corner Center: Midnight madness, baby!

Tysons Galleria: Even the Galleria is opening early for the super-sale action, at 9 a.m., will be open until 9 p.m. And don’t miss the opening of the Gingerbread Wonderland Store, brought to us by The Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner, at 2 p.m. The life-size Gingerbread Boutique will have a variety of delights, special gift ideas and exciting culinary creations to browse while shopping.

Something in the middle:

As far as other huge sales, don’t forget about Amazon, especially if you’d like to shop in your PJs. And for something that falls between the mega-mall experience and shopping in the OTBD, don’t forget about places like Reston Town Center, Fairfax Corner and Market Common in Clarendon. Regarding the big-box stores like Walmart, Target, Best Buy and hhgregg, you might want to take a peek at theblackfriday.com, which has links to all of the associated sales flyers. And, shoppers, make sure to have your smartphone scanners ready — mucho importante!

Oh, and how could we forget about Apple! They’ll be doling out their own Black Friday deals, but don’t expect miracles. We’re usually not talking nearly free Macs or anything like that.

Happy shopping! Stay classy!

AT&T Betters Cell Service in Tysons Malls

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

(Shutterstock.com/Yuri Arcurs)

Hello there, shoppers! Great news for those of you with AT&T cell coverage. The company announced today that it has expanded its mobile broadband coverage at Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria by completing the installation of a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

DAS has the ability to provide enhanced wireless coverage to customers in indoor or outdoor spaces where geographical limitations or crowd density might otherwise prevent an optimal wireless experience (think of any lunch hour, or Friday or Saturday afternoon/evening in Tysons, not to mention holidays like Black Friday). The additional capacity is expected to help improve call reliability and enable more consistent network access.

“We want our customers to have a great network experience whatever they’re doing – whether that’s making a call, checking email, downloading apps or surfing the Internet,” says Rob Forsyth, vice president and general manager for AT&T in the greater Washington/Baltimore area. “We’re committed to our investment in the local wireless network, and providing enhanced wireless coverage at Tysons Corner Center and Tysons Galleria is just one way that we’re investing in Northern Virginia.”

So, has anyone already noticed an improvement? Sounds like good homework to do over lunch.

Happy shopping!

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Friday, September 2nd, 2011

A preview of Sai-Sei luxurious bath products, to debut at Space NK in Bloomingdale's Sept. 8 (Space NK)

Hello there, shoppers! A few weeks ago, we discussed the amazing new face of the Tysons Corner Bloomingdale’s first floor, brimming with fabulous new features — make that enviable design and over 60 new brands and resources. Well, great news: The wait is over to check out the world-renowned beauty resource Space NK, now residing in the new space.

Space NK is open for business in Bloomie’s and celebrating all week by offering a free makeup brush with every $75 purchase while supplies last.

If not already familiar with Space NK, it was started in 1993 by beauty entrepreneur Nicky Kinnaird. What began as a single boutique in Covent Garden, London, showcasing Kinnaird’s personal selection of beauty discoveries from all over the world soon became a worldwide destination for the most sought-after beauty products and solutions.

Space NK now has 60 stores in the UK and 22 in the U.S. The shop-in-a-shop in Bloomingdale’s-Tysons is the first Space NK to open in Virginia. Its expertly curated selection of beauty and wellness products includes skincare, cosmetics, hair care, fragrances, home scents and gifts from more than 30 of the world’s most innovative brands. I’ve seen a preview of the holiday gift sets … amazing!

Many of the brands are exclusive to Space NK in the U.S. Expect products from Eve Lom, Sai-Sei (to debut Sept. 8 for Fashion’s Night Out, with purchases supporting Japanese earthquake/Tsunami victims), ByTerry, Diptyque, Oribe, Vincent Longo, Michael Van Clarke, Elemental Herbology, Rococo, Cane + Austin, Tata Harper and Serge Normant, along with Kinnaird’s own signature line. New inventory will be delivered every few weeks to keep the selection fresh.

Oh, and save the date: Space NK founder and beauty guru Nicky Kinnaird will be available for one-on-one consultations with customers on Nov. 12!

Tysons Bloomingdale’s Gets Beautiful New Face, Bonus Brands

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

(Bloomingdale's)

Hello there, shoppers! While shopping at Bloomingdale’s Tysons Corner has always been a wonderful experience — I fondly remember making several trips to the store all the way from Pa. when I was a tween/teen — it’s about to get oh-so-much better! The renovations that begun on the first floor of the store late last year are to be finished at the end of this month, and not only are the displays promised to be downright awesome; Bloomie’s-Tysons is adding 50 new brands and resources!

Yes, this is the kind of news that makes a shop-a-holic sing!

While the whole main floor has been given an overhaul, the highlight of the facelift is, perhaps most appropriately, in the newly revealed cosmetics department. It now has an additional 3,000 square feet of space and is welcoming six new brands. The newbies: Chantecaille, Kiehl’s, Jo Malone, Trish McEvoy, Creme de La Mer and Space NK. Existing resources — Bobbi Brown, CHANEL, Clarins, Clinique, Dior, Estee Lauder, Guerlain, Lancome, Laura Mercier, Shiseido and Yves Saint Laurent — will also be debuting new hard shops within the refurbished space, which is also to feature three upgraded spa rooms.

Fashion accessories, ladies shoes, handbags and fine jewelry departments are also newly renovated and promising fresh finds. Fine jewelry, for instance, is to debut Frederique Constant, Gucci Jewelry, Lana, Lagos, Marco Bicego, Montblanc and Movado Bold pieces. And the David Yurman section has been nearly doubled in size as a new shop-in-shop inspired by the designer’s Madison Ave. flagship store. Also very cool, a one-of-a-kind floor-to-ceiling sunglasses shop is in the works!

Photos to come soon!

Now if you had such an amazing space, wouldn’t you want to show it off? Bloomie’s is no different. Expect more than 200 in-store special events this fall, beginning Sept. 8.

Happy shopping!

More Francesca’s, Free Movies, New CB2 and Other Shop Sweets

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Monday, May 2nd, 2011

(bhathaway/Shutterstock)

Hello there, shoppers! Wow, what a busy news weekend! I wouldn’t even try to compete with all of the major stories, but I can throw you a few shopping sweets that are certain to make you smile on this manic Monday morning.

For starters, I learned while shopping at the Reston Francesca’s Collections over the weekend that they’re opening up a store in Tysons Corner Center (Level 2, near Lord & Taylor) soon, which is currently hiring fashionistas.

Also, speaking of trendy store openings, the region’s first CB2 store opened in Georgetown (3307 M St. NW) late last week. Goodbye, catalog clutter. Hello, shopping for stylish modern furniture in person.

There’s also great news for movie fanatics. Arlington Cinema ‘N’ Drafthouse is offering annual unlimited movie passes for just $55 each. The pass is good for entry into any movies that are $5.50 or less, even on weekends. Go to 10 movies, and you’ve already paid for the pass.

Another deal that’s truly delightful: Cusp is offering 20 percent off regular-priced bags and shoes today. *Reminder, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8.  Oh, and if you’re heading to Gold Cup on Saturday, don’t miss Specialicious’ discount on dining at The Rail Stop.

Happy shopping!

Tysons’ Newest Tenants

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

(shutterstock)

Hello there, shoppers! How about this glorious weather we’re having this week?! Seventy-seven degrees and sunshine on Friday …  I’ll take that! The only problem: With all of the new tenants coming to Tysons Corner Center, we”re going to want to spend some serious time indoors, too–perhaps during April showers.

This week the mall announced eight new stores and restaurants, with most to open by June! And, boy, there are some biggies!

First, opening this month is Eyebrow Designer 21,  a salon formerly of Alexandria; and Papilio, an Italian boutique specializing in hosiery and legwear, will open in April.

May will bring a bounty: Intimacy, a bra boutique offering complimentary lifetime alterations and an unparalleled selection (over 900 sizes); better-known stores Bose, Ecco and Swatch; and Catimini, a sophisticated French clothing store for kids.

Then things really heat up in June. For starters, Tysons will be home to an American Girl flagship store (looks like my nieces will have to visit more often). The month will also bring a new restaurant called Seasons 52 (a “fresh grill and wine bar” chain) and a Magic & Health salon/spa, offering accupressure/massage therapy and acupuncture.

Happy shopping!

PS. In some sad retail news, Penny Chocolates & Gelato of Fairfax will be closing at the end of the month.

Plus, the first 15 shoppers to try on a Zaharoff garment at the trunk show will receive a free gift of Zaharoff’s new men’s fragrance!

For those of you not acquainted with  the designer, he was named “Vendor of the Year” in 2000 by Neiman Marcus, and in addition for being known for his own impeccable designs (men’s wear and furniture) and fragrances (you may remember his bestselling women’s fragrance from the 90s), he is also known as a famous designer’s son. His mom designed Patti Davis’ wedding dress as well as clothing for popular TV shows such as “Dallas” and “Dynasty,” and President and First Lady Reagan.
