Posted by Natalie Kaar / Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Hello there, shoppers!

With all that spring cleaning you’ve been doing, isn’t it about time for a reward? It seems at least one area store is thinking along those lines.

Vienna’s Valerianne is hosting its first-ever Color Sale March 24-April 1. What this means: You can save up to 40 percent off on all in-stock items for atop the bed (duvet covers, pillows, coverlets, shams) and save up to 20 percent on special-order bedtop beauties.

To take advantage of the exclusive sale, all you have to do is “like” Valerianne on Facebook

Must-Hit Sales Jan. 27-29

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Friday, January 27th, 2012

Hello there, shoppers!

If you’ve found that there’s just no better way to usher in the weekend than through partaking in a little retail therapy, today you’re really in for a treat. Get a load at just a few of the downright amazing deals awaiting you.

For starters, when it comes to White Sales, Red Barn Mercantile in Alexandria and Vienna’s Valerianne know how it’s done. While this is the last weekend to partake in Red Barn Mercantile’s 20-percent-off deal on designer bedding, Valerianne’s White Sale is just beginning, with up to 75-percent savings on luxe linens for the bed, bath and table! And Red Barn Mercantile fans, there’s no reason to be sad if you can’t stop in this weekend. Not only will the store be at the OTBD Warehouse Sale next weekend with blow-your-mind bargains (see your fave Old Town stores’ Facebook pages for previews) but custom furniture will be discounted 25 percent at the shop in February — all month long.

Meanwhile, Madisonbelle, out if Leesburg, is offering a 20-percent discount on any one spring item today and tomorrow, Jan. 28.

And in Reston, The Dandelion Patch is about to move right down the street. To lighten their load (don’t we all hate moving?), the store is offering everything in the Reston store at 30 percent off this weekend.

Also, spa fans, great news! Tranquility Day Spa, a treasured Manassas serenity spot for over a decade, is having a grand re-opening celebration in downtown Haymarket today, from 6:30-8 p.m., highlighting its new Beauty Bar and Sleep Lounge, offering service sampling, complimentary food and wine pairings, and more!

And don’t forget about the anniversary celebration at IKEA in Woodbridge.

Bring this invite into the sale for 10 percent off non-sale items (with some exclusions).

Hello there, shoppers!

If you’ve been dying to shop at Vienna’s Valerianne but think its prices may be prohibitive, you’re in for a true treat.

Next week, starting Jan. 27, it will be time for the gorgeous store’s Winter White Sale, which this year means 75-percent savings on all in-stock linens for the bed, bath and table! You can also save significantly on special-order linens and down during the sale event, with a discount of 20 percent.

But it gets even better. Bring in the invite on the right of this post, and score 10-percent savings on non-sale items (excluding Santa Maria Novella, Linari and LAFCO items). You’ll go goo-goo over the gift selection, so be sure to do so.

Holiday Gift Guide: Enticing Ideas for the Entertainer

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Hello there, shoppers! If you’re excited to go holiday shopping but armed with less than ample ideas, you’re not alone. If only everyone would be forthcoming with their wish lists, right? Santa has it so easy with everyone being so specific — minus all that travel and the length of his list, I suppose.

At any rate, fret no more. Help is here. Inspiration shall abound. Your friends at SWAG have done all the homework so you don’t have to. Each weekday today through Dec. 13, score ideas for absolutely everyone on your list!

Today:

Enticing Ideas for the Entertainer

Have a friend or family member who could give Martha Stewart or “Barefoot Contessa” a run for her money? Someone who is always throwing a bash and doing so with class? Buying — or if you’re really daring (or are more artistic than moi), making — the party perfecter a gift can be especially daunting because you really, really want to deliver. Fortunately, we found more than a few gifts that could do just that — and for far less than what you’d expect. What follows are some of the standouts.

*Also check out, if you haven’t already, some of my top picks for the host and hostess as found in the November issue of Northern Virginia Magazine.

What: 10 x 14 Slate Cheese Board

(Photo courtesy of Red Barn Mercantile)

Why:  First of all, how fun and versatile is this? Your favorite entertainers should also enjoy it because they can take less time explaining which cheeses they picked and more time partying themselves. The bonus: It’s dishwasher-safe!

Where to Get It: Alexandria’s Red Barn Mercantile

What It’ll Cost You: $35

What: Cocktail Napkin Box by Mariposa

(Photo courtesy of The Nest Egg)

Why: If your dearest party perfecter is especially anal retentive about keeping the ol’ table display neat, including those oh-so-easily disheveled napkins, this attractive gift could be especially appreciated. Even if he or she is more low-key, there’s always the question as to where is best to fan the napkins; this solves it fast. After all, there are cocktails around which to wrap said napkins.

Where to Get It: The Nest Egg at Fairfax Corner

What It’ll Cost You: $44

What: Peruvian Pottery

Why: This special line of handmade Peruvian pottery is hand-cast using clay from the Andes Mountains and is microwave-, dishwasher- and oven-safe! Choose a unique gift for your favorite dinner party-loving entertainer from a full range of place settings, serving pieces and table accessories.

Where to Get It: Vienna’s Valerianne

What It’ll Cost You: Water pitcher shown is $61; set of three glasses, $53.

What: Bar Games Drink Coasters

(Photo courtesy of Sur La Table)

Why: Even the host with the most likes to sit back and allow his friends lead the fun from time to time. These coasters/bar games will help them with that enjoyable endeavor.

Where to Get It: Sur La Table at Tysons Galleria

What It’ll Cost You: $12.95

What: Jingle Bell Wine Charms (Set of 10)

(Photo courtesy of Crate & Barrel)

Why: Not only is it party season; it’s flu season. If your favorite entertainer and other friends get sick, that stops the celebrations — and fast. These festive wine charms help keep everyone out of the sick wing and center stage at all the season’s can’t-miss soirees.

Where to Get It: Crate & Barrel

What It’ll Cost You: $12.95 (makes a nice stocking stuffer or accompaniment to a nice bottle of vino)

Small Business Saturday Ready to Help Local Retail Rally

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

(Courtesy of American Express)

Hello there, shoppers! With this wonderful weather we’re having it can be difficult to remember it’s mid-November, but we really are only 40 days away from Christmas (thanks, Siri, for your quick math). That means it’s time to start holiday shopping.

Should you be among those who enjoy that post-Thanksgiving rush, get ready to help our local shops shine during the high time. American Express’s Small Business Saturday, an effort to help local boutiques get more action on the Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, returns for the second consecutive year on Nov. 26.

Pre-register your Amex for the program and spend at least $25 at a small business on Nov. 26, and score a $25 statement credit (Amex will award the statement credit to 200,000 shoppers).

But, dear shoppers, that’s not  all that’s in store for you on Small Business Saturday. Several local shops in our area will be hosting special in-store events and offering raffles, giveaways and more.

The Nest Egg, at Fairfax Corner, which participated in Small Business Saturday last year and saw a 94-percent sales increase in comparison to the preceding year, will be giving away over $1,500 in merchandise this year through gifts with purchase and in-store giveaways.

Adams Morgan will also host a slew of activities at local shops for the official Washington, D.C. Small Business Saturday celebration from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at 18th Street and Columbia Road NW/ Sun Trust Plaza. Adams Morgan events will include: Farmer’s Market 40th Anniversary, 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.; free coffee at Tryst Coffee Shop at 10 a.m.; Winter Fashion show, 11 a.m. – noon; Wine Tasting with AM Wine Shoppe, 3-4 p.m.; live music from noon – 2 p.m.; raffles and giveaways; a mayoral Proclamation reading at noon; and discount parking.

Also, we just learned that Vienna’s Valerianne will be doing a giveaway for shoppers. And yet this is only the beginning.

“Last year, independent merchants who accept American Express saw an average boost in sales of 28 percent on Small Business Saturday,” says Mary Ann Fitzmaurice Reilly, senior vice president at American Express OPEN. “Shoppers sent a clear message that shopping local is an important part of the holiday season, and small businesses are rewarding that loyalty with what their customers care about most–superior service, unique selection and some great deals.”

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

(lifewithcancer.org)

Hello there, shoppers! I hope your calendar is not too full tonight. From 6-9 p.m. it will be time for Inova’s annual Sip, Sample, Shop event to benefit Life with Cancer.

Life with Cancer helps local families affected by cancer cope, through education, information and support programs, offered free of charge thanks to donations. Held at the Waterford at Fair Oaks, right by Fair Oaks Mall, Sip, Sample, Shop features dozens of top area restaurants and retailers (Think Bazin’s, The Dandelion Patch, Valerianne), who will all be donating 15 percent of purchases to the nonprofit.

And it’s not too late to attend. Online ticketing has closed, but tickets, $50, will be sold at the door.

Talk about feel-good shopping!

Monday Margaritas for a Marvelous Cause

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Monday, September 26th, 2011

Hello there, shoppers! Fresh off the heels of the Washington, D.C. Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, where I was inspired beyond measure over the three-day, 60-mile journey — from lacing up 4 a.m. on Friday morning to dancing in celebration on the Washington Monument Grounds late yesterday afternoon — it’s my pleasure to share another special opportunity to help area cancer patients.

Next Monday, Oct. 3, neighboring Vienna businesses Valerianne and Bazin’s on Church will be hosting a festive soiree in celebration of a very special new cancer center, The Sharon Nicolaisen Appearance Center, soon to open at the Dewberry Life With Cancer Family Center, aka “Carolyn’s House.”

The new center will serve as a one-stop shop to help cancer patients understand and cope with the appearance-altering aspects of their disease and treatment, helping to restore their self esteem and enhance their quality of life.

The event, taking place from 6-9 p.m., will begin at Valerianne where guests will enjoy margaritas and small bites from Bazin’s new Mexican concept while also enjoying the musings of Segen Laird Scott from NYC’s LAFCO, sharing the wonders of Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. Then, the party will move downstairs to Bazin’s where its owners will preview menu items from their new venture (cash bar).

If able to attend, please RSVP by Sept. 30.

Happy shopping!

Furniture from Lee Industries (shopthenestegg.blogspot.com)

Hello there, shoppers! If you think summer sales are the most exciting things taking place at area stores right now, you may be wrong. After all, it’s not just mid-season markdowns that are incredible, so is the new inventory according to several area merchants.

A few examples:

The Nest Egg in Fairfax now offers custom, made-in-the-U.S.A., upholstered furniture from the renowned Lee Industries.

Valerianne in Vienna has a lovely new line of tabletop ceramics and pottery all handmade using clay from the Andes Mountains in Peru. The store has numerous place-setting ideas and one-of-a-kind serving pieces and accessories.  Oh, and very important: Each piece is dishwasher-, microwave- and oven-safe!

The Dandelion Patch, in Vienna, Reston and Leesburg, just got the fall colors of Vera Bradley accessories in stock for early back-to-school shoppers. Sorry to mention the S-word, kids.

And Gossip on 23rd, in Crystal City, as we have mentioned before, now has a much bigger store, including items for little ones and men, in addition to all of their on-trend, wallet-friendly ladies’ wear. For more on the expansion, see our August issue.

Happy shopping!
