Black Friday & Thanksgiving Day are both promising big bargains this year! (Shutterstock.com/Johnkworks)
Hello there, shoppers! If you’re bent on bagging some big-time bargains during the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season, to commence in just a few days, here’s hoping you’re resting up now. Black Friday starts a day early this year at many stores — yup, Turkey Day, before many are even expected to come out of their food comas.
That includes Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets; while Midnight Madness is planned, as in years past, some stores will be opening as early as 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Other stores opening on Thursday include Walmart, which will be opening at 10 p.m.
While it would be virtually impossible to send you all of details on the deluge of deals, here are the high points, including a few pointers on staying ahead of the pack:
The city streets, anti-mall experience:
Head to Old Town Alexandria. Many stores in the Old Town Boutique District are offering 30-percent savings from 6-8 a.m., 20-percent savings from 8-10 a.m. and 10-percent savings the rest of the day. And every OTBD shop has something very special in store. Some discounts are even bigger; for instance, Treat is offering 40-percent savings from 8-10 a.m. Plus, the city is offering free parking on Black Friday at all city-owned garages and lots, with many opening at 6 a.m. Stick around until 7 p.m. for the tree lighting and other fun holiday festivities.
FREE PARKING HOURS: Market Square Garage, 108 N. Fairfax St., open 6 a.m. on Friday until 6 a.m. on Saturday; Courthouse Square Garage, 111 S. Pitt St., open 6 a.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday; Thompson’s Alley Garage, 10 Thompson’s Alley, open 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Friday; N. Union St. Garage, 220 N. Union St., open 6 a.m. on Friday until 2:30 a.m. on Saturday; S. Henry St. Lot, 112 S. Henry St., from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday; Cameron/ Saint Asaph St. Lot, 210 N. Saint Asaph St., from 6 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Friday.
The mega-mall experience:
Here are your Black Friday sale hours (click on the mall links for the deals):
Fair Oaks Mall: 6 a.m.-10 p.m.
Fashion Center at Pentagon City: 5 a.m.- 10 p.m.
Dulles Town Center: Some stores will open as early as 5 a.m. (the rest at 6 a.m.) and as late as 11 p.m. (the rest at 10 p.m.)
Tysons Corner Center: Midnight madness, baby!
Tysons Galleria: Even the Galleria is opening early for the super-sale action, at 9 a.m., will be open until 9 p.m. And don’t miss the opening of the Gingerbread Wonderland Store, brought to us by The Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner, at 2 p.m. The life-size Gingerbread Boutique will have a variety of delights, special gift ideas and exciting culinary creations to browse while shopping.
Something in the middle:
As far as other huge sales, don’t forget about Amazon, especially if you’d like to shop in your PJs. And for something that falls between the mega-mall experience and shopping in the OTBD, don’t forget about places like Reston Town Center, Fairfax Corner and Market Common in Clarendon. Regarding the big-box stores like Walmart, Target, Best Buy and hhgregg, you might want to take a peek at theblackfriday.com, which has links to all of the associated sales flyers. And, shoppers, make sure to have your smartphone scanners ready — mucho importante!
Oh, and how could we forget about Apple! They’ll be doling out their own Black Friday deals, but don’t expect miracles. We’re usually not talking nearly free Macs or anything like that.
Happy shopping! Stay classy!

Good morning, shoppers! Happy Friday!
Ready for the snow? Whether you’re thrilled about the forecast or dreading it, chances are you’ll be spending a little more time than usual tucked inside your house this weekend. To help you from getting stir-crazy and eating a small country’s share of holiday cookies, what follows are a few of the super-fun finds I discovered on the Twittersphere, etc., this morning.
Just remember that random is not always bad.
The Great Eight of Fun Friday Finds:
1.) Fantastic gifts in the under-$100 category at neimanmarcus.com: Examples include the not-so-stylish, but super-functional Clocky (regularly $59, now 20 percent off), an alarm clock that lets you hit snooze once, but then, it’s all over … it jumps off of wherever it’s been sitting and rolls around all over the place, while beeping, until sleepyhead turns it off; and these handbag hangers ($28-$40, some now 20 percent off) that hook onto any table, preventing bar floor funk and the like from ruining fabulous accessories.
2.) Amazing prices on airfare to sunny spots like So-Cal and Florida: Examples found on twitter.com/dcfares include round-trip airfare from D.C. to West Palm Beach, January through March, at $169 (including taxes) and round-trip from D.C. to San Diego, January through March, for $216.
3.) Bargain boots just about everywhere: Places to check out include endless.com, which is now offering up to 45 percent off boots, shoes and accessories; Nordstrom and nordstrom.com, for lots of styles under $100; and Piperlime.com, which is also offering a bevy of boots for under $100.
4.) Flowers for less, now and in the future: 1800flowers.com is offering 15 percent off and a $15 savings pass to anyone places an order through Sunday and uses the code “GFT25″ at checkout.
5.) Serious sales at old standbys: Examples include up to 40-percent discounts on select items at Banana Republic, in stores and online; 20-percent savings on skincare and other beauty buys with code “DEC20″ at skinstore.com; and a buy one, get one for $10 deal on everything at Arden B.
6.) InStyle’s 100 Best Dresses of the Decade: Featuring party dress inspiration like I’ve never seen it before, this could keep you busy for hours.
7.) Good news for iPod shoppers: Beginning tomorrow in Wal-Mart stores, the 8GB iPod Nano will be reduced $5 and come with a $50 iTunes gift card — while supplies last through Dec. 24.
8.) Handbag Heaven: Check out the “It” bags on sale at Cusp and explore ebags.com, too, which is now offering a free second-day air shipping upgrade.
Enjoy! Stay safe on the roads and have a wonderful weekend!
Saying “Goodbye” to a Beloved Jeweler, “Hello” to Some Major Deals

Good morning, shoppers! Here’s hoping each of you had a lovely, restful weekend. After all, you’re going to want to start drafting your holiday lists.
First of all, if you didn’t catch the sad news over a week ago or spy signs along area roads this weekend announcing that long-beloved Bailey, Banks & Biddle is liquidating its stores (including NoVA locations: Fashion Center at Pentagon City, Fair Oaks Mall and Tysons Corner Center), here’s your notice, and invitation to save up to 50 percent on BBB’s amazing jewelry now before it’s gone.
Also, on a much happier note, Christmas is coming early for area denim lovers. Madewell’s 2009 Denim Tour is making a stop at the Tysons store tomorrow evening (10/6) from 6 to 8 p.m., with special guest Lucky Magazine – offering one-on-one styling tips from Lucky editors plus serious SWAG bags and discounts! Wanna go? RSVP by emailing Tysonsevents@madewell1937.com. And look for our very own stylish editor, Lynn Norusis, who also plans to attend.
And as you may have caught on NBC4, as I did, this morning, soon it will also be time to save big-time on gifts for your favorite little tykes. This holiday season, Wal-Mart will be selling 100 of its most popular toys for just $10 each!

Miley Cyrus & Max Azria (Wal-Mart)
Let’s face it, even us iPhone- and BlackBerry-toting individuals can have trouble keeping up with all of the latest, hottest shopping news … especially during the sweet, sweet summertime! (Trust me, I know. I’m in sunny South Carolina as you read this.) So, below is my unofficial version of Cliffs Notes, to help catch you up to speed on all sorts of random retail goodness.
Okay, what to know now:
1.) Being born an identical twin of Megan Fox just wasn’t in the cards for us (boy, that would have made my hubby happy); yet, according to StoreAdore, at least we can wear the same jewelry.
2.) Miley Cyrus fans have a whole new reason to squeal with delight. The pop star has teamed up with Max Azria to create a fashion line for Wal-Mart. The items, each to cost under $20, are to hit stores in early August.
3.) The Renaissance Mayflower Hotel is the place to be on the evening of June 23, as CityShopGirl will be hosting a bash from 6 to 8 p.m., to include complimentary makeup application, hair styling, massage and more from area beauty experts! Loyal followers, RSVP to rsvp@cityshopgirl.com by June 20 to snag a spot at the soiree.
4.) For those of you who don’t want to buy Dad just any old tie: How about a tie that can hold (hide) his iPod? *Reminder: Stay tuned for lots of other cool gift ideas for your fantastic father from Susan Anspach next Friday.
5.) Would you like the opportunity to brag about the person who you believe has made the greatest impact in NoVA? If so, you could earn recognition and win a $50 gift card to either the Fair Oaks Mall or The Dandelion Patch for you both!
6.) And, in case you ever find yourself feeling sorry for Ryan Seacrest because of his incredibly hectic schedule, you should just think of this video. Turns out he gets to keep all of the posh suits he dons on American Idol. No surprise, actually, as they’re custom made.
Okay, I know I missed some good stuff. Please feel free to comment and leave other shopping nuggets for your fellow shoppers! And, please stay tuned for guest hosts to keep you entertained and informed throughout the rest of the week!
Bye for now.
