Hello there, shoppers! Can’t get enough of the Golden Globes gorgeousness? (Jake Gyllenhaal, so glad you’re back!) Don’t forget about today’s must-hit MLK Day sales!

A few of the standouts:

It’s time for the annual Bed & Bath Event at Restoration Hardware — save up to 25 percent on luxurious linens.

It’s also time to save face; skinstore.com – brimming with dermatologist-recommended brands in face creams, body lotions and scrubs, shampoo and more — is offering 20 percent off site-wide with the code NEW2012.

Select styles in fashions for the whole fam are on a mega sale at Gap, in stores and online. Online is where you’ll find the biggest bargains, up to 40 percent off plus an additional 10-percent discount with the code GAPEXTRA. Sister store Banana Republic is also busying doling out deals today; save 30 percent on full-priced styles, 35 percent on already reduced styles, in store and online (online, use code BRONSALE).

Fashions are also on a fierce sale at Periwinkle, with locations in Shirlington, Del Ray and National Harbor — we’re talking 50- to 75-percent discounts on winter wear!

Just in time for the Super Bowl, Williams-Sonoma is offering $150 off the All-Clad Deluxe Slow Cooker. Bring on that chili!

At noon, Gilt is going to blow you away with deals on Winter Kate, Cynthia Rowley, Narciso Rodriguez and more.

Cusp has made some fantastic new additions to their sale racks. Same for Anthropologie — which is coming to Alexandria Jan. 26.

And, of course, all of the big box department stores are full of fantastic sales, including Bloomie’s, which is offering 30-50 percent off select styles.

Sure Things: Beaba Babycook

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Monday, August 22nd, 2011

The Beaba Babycook shown in Celery (Williams-Sonoma)

Hello there, shoppers! I think everyone knows that when it comes to shopping for baby, it’s easy to go overboard. Everything is just so precious! Plus, so many things promise to make parenthood a breeze. Since it’s really hard for me to resist buying adorable outfits and there are a reasonable number of things that a baby really needs (hello, diapers!), my hubby and I have tried to keep the unnecessary tools and gadgets to a minimum when shopping for our baby girl.

That’s why when lots of friends recommended the Beaba Babycook, we were not instantly sold.

As easy as all the pre-packaged solid foods are, we did want to have more control over what our daughter eats, but we weren’t so sure that a regular old steamer and blender wouldn’t do. For one thing, we already had a blender, so we’d only have to purchase the steamer; and that would be cheaper than the Beaba, which runs about $120-$150. But like many parents who are especially busy — who isn’t among that group? — and, equally as important, short on counter space, we eventually caved.

And I’m so glad we did. I would definitely count the Beaba Babycook as a Sure Thing.

Why?

For one, it’s very easy to use. I’d call it cakey.

Second, it’s fast. Carrots steam in less than 15 minutes.

Third, it’s super easy to clean. You steam the food in a basket inserted into the same glass pitcher that you eventually use to blend the food, so you’re only cleaning the basket and the pitcher (with blade), plus one small lid (used when you do the blending) and a spatula.

Fourth, it’s safe. The Beaba Babycook is BPA-tested, guaranteed free of BPA.

And, fifth, it’s very small. Of course, this means it doesn’t take up lots of counter or cupboard space — a big one in my book, given my galley kitchen.

Even more impressive, it not only steams and blends; the device will also defrost and reheat!

As one Amazon reviewer recently wrote, pointing out the ease of use, “It’s a slacker mom’s dream.” I’d replace “slacker” with “beyond-busy,” but you get the idea.

Happy shopping! In addition to Amazon other online retailers, Beaba products are available at Williams-Sonoma and buybuy Baby stores as well as at Baby Blossom, in Fairfax.

Sure Things: Shun Knives

Posted by Natalie Kaar / Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Shun 6-piece Knife Block Set, $699.95, regularly $1,032 (williams-sonoma.com)

Hello there, shoppers! Do you get frustrated every time you cook thanks to cutlery that doesn’t really cut it? I wholeheartedly suggest you check out Shun Knives. Talk about Sure Things!

While the handcrafted cutlery is a tad pricey, you get what you pay for if you ask me. Made of steel, the knives are super strong. But even more importantly, they’re unbelievable sharp and stay that way for a long, long time. I have been using several of the knives for years, and they’re still razor-sharp. Plus, I rest assured knowing that when they do finally lose their edge (the puns just keep on coming),  the company will sharpen them for free.

If you’ve never explored Shun, the time is now. Williams-Sonoma is having a huge sale on their entire Shun selection. The store is also very good about letting you try out the knives in stores.

A New Life for Fruitcake

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Most of us probably think of fruitcake as a hard tasteless block of flavorless cake that arrives in the mailbox from a long lost great-aunt.  I had fruitcake as a child and can say that it certainly isn’t something that I fought over with my siblings.  Someone had sent the fruitcake in the mail for the holidays and it must have been en route since October.  It was hard as a rock and dry.

Legend has it that the reason fruitcake became associated with Christmas is because in the late 1700′s the English passed out slices of the cake to poor Christmas carol singers.

I always thought I hated fruitcake until last year when I had a bite of a delicious, moist, nutty fruitcake that had been homemade by a friend.  I intend to find a good recipe this year and make one that will change the minds of any fruitcake haters that visit my house.

When searching for the perfect recipe, I found that Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville has a Monastery Bakery and sells fruitcakes year-round.   Their fruitcakes are made from an old-fashioned recipe with select fruit and nuts in a brandy-laced batter.

The Monastery Bakery also makes  a special treat called “Fraters”.  The fraters are small slices of their fruitcake smothered in dark chocolate.  I have never tried them, but a moist bite of fruitcake coated in chocolate sounds delicious.

For a delicious fruitcake that doesn’t take up any of your time, try the Assumption Abbey Fruitcake from Williams-Sonoma or the Traditional Fruitcake from Neiman Marcus.

Whether you bake your own fruitcake, buy a fruitcake, or receive one in the mail from someone special, give fruitcake another try this year.  It can be a great holiday treat and all fruitcakes don’t deserve a bad rap.

A Gingerbread Tradition

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Monday, November 29th, 2010

Every year at Thanksgiving, I make a gingerbread house.  Actually, I buy a gingerbread house kit and follow the instructions, usually eating part of the candy cane lamp-post and gumdrop roof before the walls are even up.  My gingerbread house usually looks a little different, but I am sure that has to do with my eating of the building material.

Not all gingerbread houses and pieces are edible, so if you decide to have a taste, check the ingredients or the box.  Not every gingerbread house is as simple as mine.  In fact, there are some pretty intricate gingerbread houses out there.

Building a gingerbread house may seem like something for kids, but it is a really fun activity you can enjoy with kids, adults, or the entire extended family.  When it’s finished, you have a masterpiece that is truly your own, even if it looks a little simple.

You can order some cool gingerbread kits from King Arthur Flour, or pick one up at Target, CVS, or Whole Foods.  You can even get a personalized Gingerbread Estate custom-made from Williams-Sonoma.

If you aren’t sure you have the skills to make a gingerbread house, head to the Ritz Carlton in Pentagon City on December 4th or 18th for a gingerbread house workshop.  Pastry Chef Dallas Marsteller will host the workshop, and you will go home with your very own gingerbread house.

Deals to Dive Into Today

Posted by The Editorial Desk / Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Hi there, shoppers! Well, it looks like Mother Nature has saved us from experiencing another major snowstorm. Thank goodness, right?! Of course, that’s not the only thing to be thankful for today, though. Just two of the numerous reasons to sport a smile:  our new Snowmageddon Sorrows Contest, in which venting pays, and the following absolutely sensational sales:

Heading on a Spring Break trip soon? Calvinklein.com is offering 30 percent off all swimwear today. Also, at American Eagle Outfitters, in stores and online, all spring dresses and skirts are currently just $30 or less. Cusp is also pulling out all of the stops. During their Luck of the Stylish Event, spending $300 or more on regular-priced merchandise will get you $25 Lucky Bucks to put toward a future Cusp purchase, a $10 iTunes gift card, a Cusp tote, Hanky Panky panties and the March issue of Lucky! By the way, swinging back to swimwear, I recently spotted a few bandeau beauties at Victoria’s Secret that were very reasonably priced.

Have shoes on the brain? As I first learned through listening to The Kane Show this morning, Nine West is offering a 15-percent discount plus free shipping through the end of February exclusively to their Facebook fans. You can also grab Clarks for a steal soon; all styles will be discounted 20 percent at the Tysons Corner Center store this Friday through Sunday. Then again, if you’re looking for super-high-end soles you’ll want to peruse the premier designer pretties on sale at Portero.com.

Have food on your brain more than anything else? How does saving $80 on a Krups high-performance deep fryer this week at Williams-Sonoma, plus scoring free shipping if you place an order online by Sunday, sound?

And, the above deals are only the beginning. Happy shopping!
