One Last Hurrah Before Hibernation Season

By Cami Clarkson

With summer coming to a close and the weather starting to cool down, it’s time to take that weekend or week-long getaway before the cold of winter sets in. There are a number of hidden gems in this region that are only a short drive away and full of local treasures.

Deep Creek Lake, MD
Located in the picturesque mountains of western Maryland is Deep Creek Lake, the state’s largest freshwater lake. “It’s a great place to get away to for the day or weekend. In the summer, temperatures here are oftentimes 20 degrees less, and there’s always a nice afternoon breeze, which makes swimming in the fresh water lake or lying on the white sand beach a real treat,” says Delaine Campbell of Long and Foster realtors. “There’s something for everyone here.” Not to mention, it’s not just a summer destination. In the winter, the area is home to excellent skiing and ice fishing. Rappahannock, VA
For a scenic getaway close to D.C., visit Rappahannock, just 70 miles west of the nation’s capital. Rappahannock County “offers stunning Appalachian views from scenic byways, country inns, B&Bs and cottages, excellent cuisine and wine tasting at some of Virginia’s best artisanal wineries,” says Laura Overstreet, a tourism consultant. It’s home to one of the greatest restaurants in the area, the five-star, five-diamond Inn at Little Washington. Visitors can also indulge in nature at the nearby Shenandoah National Park. For culture, take in the farm tour in September, or the artist tour in November. For more information visit www.visitrappahannockva.com.
